Let's travel together #162 - Lacul Sărat (The Salty Lake)

An outstanding tour to some of the wildest, oldest, and most forgotten lands of Romania and Europe, that will bring you to a Salt Lake full of mystery which will easily beat up all the SPA resorts most of the people pay heavy money for.

Today we make our final steps on the last stop from the beautiful journey discovering Danube Delta which started 2 weeks ago when I first posted about it.
It might seem like we've spent an eternity on these places due to the length of the posts and all the beauties we got to explore, but in reality, we spent only 12 hours but full of adrenaline, adventure and smiles.
Twelve hours that started from the early hours of the morning, with full of emotions and curiosity not being completely aware of everything that was about to satisfy our hearts with fresh outstanding memories.
Today we don't jump into the boat to go on the next stop but actually walk just 2 km further from our last discovery - Letea Forest.
A forest that decided it's time to step away a little bit from the usual forests we all know, and evolve itself on a very arid island with lots of sand and dust instead of soil, 700 years old oak trees, 2000 wild horses and lots of other animals which are making their living on some of the most forgotten lands from Europe and Romania.

Even though we thought we have already seen everything on that day, our guide reminded us that we have one more stop which is on a Salt Lake located nowhere else but in the middle of the sand dunes where the vegetation barely survives during the hot days of the summer.

The Salty Lake from Letea comes with some mystery but not unexpected if we pay attention to its name, because the pool is known as being extremely salty and no matter how deep it is, it's literally impossible for someone to get drowned due to the big level of salt which can make anybody float.

Depending on the period when you visit Letea, you might have a surprise finding lots of kids playing in the water because the lake it's often used by those who want to learn how to swim during the summer.
Luckily, there was no one when we visited The Salty Lake, but we also didn't get the right dose of braveness to test the authenticity of the stories which made the lake be called like that.
As tiny as it seems, the lake doesn't measure any lower than 7 meters depth, but nobody really got the chance to find out its real depth due to the salt which brings you back to the surface in no time.
And if you didn't meet the wild horses in the Letea Forest, better watch out because along with the sand dunes and The Salty Lake you might have the surprise to discover some here and there, just like we did :)
As unbelievable as it seems to find a lake which measures a few meters length in the middle of sand and a tiny desert, as incredible is its story which proves that a long time ago the whole island where Letea currently is, used to be covered by the sea, until one day when the level of the water decreased and the island was formed, but where The Salty Lake literally appeared over the night when a spring of salt made its way out through the powerful layer of sand.

The lake not only that comes as a blessing for anybody who wants to learn how to swim and can do so right into the waters of the pool, but its big level of salt is considered healthier than any SPA and any other treatment people would pay lots of money for, due to the mud which rests on the bottom of the lake.

As much as we loved that day and got our skin burned by the sun rays which were caressing our faces the whole journey, as much we needed another break before we jump into the boat and head back to the port. So our guide made one last stop on the Letea where some houses were specially arranged for the tourists with some improvised restaurants where you can eat traditional food and lots of specialities you can find only on Danube Delta.

The price of the food can be either included on the ticket you buy for the whole journey on Danube Delta or not, depending on your food preferences. Talking about a restaurant on one of the islands of Danube Delta, expect lots of food which includes fish, and since we are not big fans of this type of food (personally I don't eat fish at all), we decided to bring some sandwiches from home and just rest under one of the umbrellas that tried to protect us from the sun rays for the next 2 hours we spent on there.

Keep in mind that no matter if there are just two or all the tourists who decide to take the lunch on the restaurant, the stop will still be made due to the guides which need to take a break from the continuous ride and eat something.
So if you are not a fan of fish, you better bring with you a small package of food from home so you don't have any surprises.
Plus, this final stop really came right in time if we are talking about how many amazing places we've seen in such a short time.
And it's always great to have a moment of thinking and reflect on everything that happened on that day considering that we were still pretty euphoric by all the treasures nature share with us one more time.
We were just a few hours away from our arrival to the port from where we jumped into the boat pretty emotional, but to whom we could already feel the yearning after more than half of the day where we crossed lots of lakes and rivers which are creating the beautiful Danube Delta that offered to us more than we could ever ask for:
A wild, simple, minimalist, free and fresh journey that showed how little we need in life to be truly happy and get a constant smile on our faces.

There are literally lots of options when it comes to picking a tour for visiting Danube Delta, but the one we opted for, did cost 160 RON / per person (33 EUR), and it takes no less than 7 hours to explore everything we've seen.

Happily, we were lucky enough to taste the feeling of Danube Delta with one of the best guides from Tulcea (Port Aval) where our journey started, which never showed being tired of sharing the same stories of the surroundings over and over again and don't rush all the way back to the port when the journey ended.

Depending on how lucky you are, you can either experience the whole tour with a guide which can't wait for the tour to end and run all the way back to the port or... just like it happened to us, to explore everything slowly and have an amazing experience we would love to repeat anytime.
More than that, our guide opted for a different route than the one we followed on going so we see a different face of Danube Delta that not too many people usually venture on.
The boat that he drove was a small one which is dedicated to a group of 10 people, but there are other options too depending on what you would rather prefer to see, and the journey started on 9 AM.
Though, it's still recommended to come earlier to the port to meet the guide and see the boat you will spend the rest of the day into, but also for greater chances to catch a better sit on the boat.

You can start your journey discovering some of the wildest and oldest lands of Romania and Europe from either Tulcea or Sulina ports, and you can read more about the options you have from the official tours organised for Danube Delta, right HERE.

That is so true, I loved this article and I hope to come back into the Danube Delta soon!
I reccommend anyone to book a Danube Delta Boat Tour and see the last virgin place in Europe, at least in my honest opinion!

Buna Gabriela!
