Saludos amigos; con este post llegamos al final de mi viaje por EEUU, recorriendo 6 ciudades en 25 días. Un viaje lleno de emociones y mucho conocimiento. Pude comprobar que conocía mucho de este gran país a traves de sus series y películas; sentí como si ya había estado ahí. Fue muy emocionante estar en lugares que había visto cuando niño en alguna película. Muchas veces me sentí en casa.

Greetings friends; with this post we arrive at the end of my trip through the USA, visiting 6 cities in 25 days. A trip full of emotions and a lot of knowledge. I could see that I knew a lot about this great country through its series and films; I felt as if I had already been there. New Orleans

Esta ciudad fue la última parada antes de regresar a Venezuela. Estuve aquí cinco días que resumiré en este post. Es una ciudad pequeña en comparación con otras; aproximadamente 300 mil habitantes, pero tiene mucha energía y sobre todo está muy enfocada en el turismo, uno bastante peculiar.

Si me pidieran que definiera a New Orleans en dos palabras diría: "Jazz y Budú". Aunque tiene otras características como la comida exótica basada principalmente en mariscos; fueron estas dos cosas las que me sentí, son su marca más resaltante.

Llegamos al InterContinental New Orleans, que se encuentra en toda una avenida principal con muchos edificios entre hoteles y oficinas. Esa avenida muy ancha, tiene en el centro un canal para el tren vía, que es como una isla en la calle, por lo tanto hay que tener mucho cuidado, porque piensas que estás en tu zona segura de la callle y resulta que te pisa un tren 😁

We arrived at InterContinental New Orleans, which is located along a main avenue with many buildings between hotels and offices. That very wide avenue, has in the center a channel for the train track, which is like an island in the street, therefore you have to be very careful, because you think you are in your safe zone of the street and it happens that a train steps on you 😁

A pesar que la ciudad estaba bastante vacía, se notaba la energía y vitalidad. Los carnavales de New Orleans son los más importantes de todo el norte de América y se nota en las tienes porque faltando meses siempre tienen de todo lo que atañe al carnaval.

Although the city was quite empty, you could feel the energy and vitality. New Orleans' carnivals are the most important in all of North America and you can tell by the fact that they always have everything related to the carnival when you are months away.

La avenida principal es inmensa y muy amplia en comparación con todas las demás que veremos más adelante. Es común ver carruajes paseando a los turistas. Lo hay de diversas formas, tanto de motos, como a caballo o incluso a pedal como vemos en la siguiente foto.

The main avenue is immense and very wide compared to all the others we will see later on. It is common to see carriages walking the tourists. There are several ways to do it, either by motorcycle, on horseback or even by pedal as we see in the next picture.

En esta imagen podemos ver lo que les comentaba antes. En tren vía que atraviesa el centro de New Orleans y que pasa por el centro de la calle, lo que cualquier turista podría pensar que es lugar seguro apartado de los autos y aunque se ven los rieles, uno se podría confiar.

In this image we can see what I told you before. By train track that crosses the center of New Orleans and passes through the center of the street, which any tourist could think is a safe place away from cars and although you can see the rails, one could be careless.

Katrina

Antes de continuar debo contarles que visité a New Orleans, pocos días después que el huracán Isac tocara sus costas, convirtiéndose en tormenta. La ciudad estaba muy sola porque incluso una semana antes había toque de queda. De hecho no estábamos seguros que cumpliríamos nuestro itinerario debido a esta tormente y fue en Los Angeles que nos confirmaron que podíamos ir.

New Orleans vivía todavía para ese año 2012 con la sombra del Katrina; el Huracán más mortífero en la historia de los EEUU. Precísamente este huracán hizo su mayor daño en la ciudad de New Orleans y parte de nuestra visita era para conocer los casos de éxito tras esté fenómeno natural.

El Katrina inundó al 85% de New Orleans, al fallar sus diques que debían contener el agua. Recordemos que gran parte de la ciudad se encuentra bajo el nivel del mar como podrán ver en una de las fotos.

Al llegar otro huracán o tormenta a la zona, muchos recuerdan la tragedia vivida, que dejó a la mitad de habitantes a la ciudad porque se mudaron a otras más al norte.

Debido a esto, conocí una New Orleans muy tanquila y que se notaba no era su acostumbrada actividad. Muchos locales estaban vacíos o cerrados.

New Orleans posee uno de los acuarios más importantes de EEUU, aunque cuando pasé por ahí estaba cerrado o eso parecía. Por eso solo alcancé a tomarle foto a la lista de precios que me pareció bastante alta y sobre todo si la comparo con el Loro Parque en Tenerife por menos de la mitad o incluso es más caro que Universal Estudios en Los Angeles.

Katrina flooded 85 percent of New Orleans when its levees, which were supposed to contain the water, failed. Remember that much of the city is below sea level as you can see in one of the photos.
When another hurricane or storm arrives in the area, many remember the tragedy that left half of the inhabitants in the city because they moved to other cities further north.
Because of this, I met a very quiet New Orleans and you could tell it was not their usual activity. Many places were empty or closed.
New Orleans has one of the most important aquariums in the United States, although when I passed by it was closed or so it seemed. That's why I only managed to take a picture of the price list, which seemed quite high and especially if I compare it with Loro Parque in Tenerife for less than half or even more expensive than Universal Estudios in Los Angeles.

Algo que me encantó fue conocer el Río Mississippi. Ver un barco de esos que salín en las películas, con sus "remos" fue impresionante, aunque no sé si realmente se le dice así

One thing I loved was getting to know the Mississippi River. To see one of those boats that I saw in the movies, with its "oars" was impressive, although I don't know if it's really called that.

El tren vía también bordea parte del río y es una zona muy rica para caminar, justo donde divide el Mississippi de French Quarter, que es la zona turística por excelencia y de la que les mostraré muchísimas fotos, aunque son solo una pequeña parte de las que tomé.

French Quarter

French Quarter es una zona muy linda de New Orleans, de hecho para mí es lo único que vale la pena para pagar un viaje hasta allá. Lo veo perfecto para el turismo interno, pero no tan atractivo para el externo. Claro, hablo de New Orleans en su conjunto y lo poco que vi de EEUU, pero dejemos mejor que les de mi veredicto al final.

French Quarter is a very nice area of New Orleans, in fact for me it's the only thing worth paying for a trip there. I see it as perfect for the internal tourism, but not so attractive for the external one. Of course, I am talking about New Orleans as a whole and the little I have seen of the United States, but let me give you my verdict at the end.

Esta zona tiene una arquitectura de estilo francés y abundan sus cafés al aire libre. Se puede encontrar muchas cosas, como galerías de arte, locales con música en vivo, buenos restarurantes, pubs y hasta nigth clubs.

También tienes hoteles pequeños con esta bella arquitectura y donde hubiese preferido hospedarme y no en un hotel 5 estrellas pero común e igual al resto.

This area has a French style architecture and there are many open air cafes. You can find many things, such as art galleries, places with live music, good restaurants, pubs and even night clubs.
You also have small hotels with this beautiful architecture and where I would have preferred to stay and not in a 5 star hotel but common and equal to the rest.

Algo que me pareció sumamente curioso, fue el hecho de ver a muchas personas sentadas con sillas y mesas frente a la iglesia principal. Estas personas ofrecen servicios "espirituales" de lectura de cartas, tarot, incluso si quieres hacerle un budú a alguien. No me imagino lo que debe sentir el sacerdote de esa iglesia 😁

Something I found extremely curious was the fact that I saw many people sitting with chairs and tables in front of the main church. These people offer "spiritual" services of card reading, tarot, even if you want to do a budu for someone. I can't imagine how the priest of that church must feel 😁

Otra de las curiosidades es que los nombres de las calles se encuentran en el piso y sí, están muy deteriorados, algo obvio por estar ahí.

El mercado de New Orleans es muy famoso y una verdadera belleza. Lastimosamente casi todos los negocios estaban cerrados y casi nadie de visita. Ya en esta etapa del viaje estaba en modo súper ahorro y me limité en comer algo ahí ☹️

The New Orleans market is very famous and a real beauty. Unfortunately almost all the stores were closed and almost nobody was visiting. At this stage of the trip I was already in super savings mode and I limited myself to eating something there ☹️

Algo que si teníia que hacer es sentarme en un lugar a disfrutar del Jazz en vivo. Mientras caminaba por toda la French Quater, de poco más de 1 Km², escuichaba jazz en cada esquina que salía de los restaurantes; sin embargo yo quería uno tipo café al aire libre y fue casi al final de mi paseo que lo encontré. El bar de los 3 músicos, que años después lo vi en una película 😁

One thing I did have to do was sit in a place and enjoy live jazz. As I walked all over the French Quater, a little over 1 km², I heard jazz at every corner coming out of the restaurants; however, I wanted an open-air café and it was almost at the end of my walk that I found it. The three musicians' bar, which years later I saw in a movie 😁

The Guerrilla Garden

Una de las cosas más emocionantes del viaje fue poder realizar la campaña "Dr. King Tree" de la ONG "ruta de PAZ" que consiste en plantar árboles al rededor del mundo en honor a Martin Luther King; promoviendo la paz en esos lugares.

Esta campaña la inicié con un grupo de amigos, el 15 de enero (natalicio de King) de 2008. Se realizó en tres ciudades simultaneamente: Valencia, Miami y Caracas. Desde entonces esta campaña ha viajado por varios países y ciudades, entre las que se encuentran a Tenerife.

En este viaje le di la idea al grupo, para que plantáramos un árbol. Mis compañeros no se vieron tan motivados, sin embargo nuestras guías se emocionaron mucho. Nos dijeron que sería un bonito gesto de nuestra parte como agradecimiento por el viaje y que mejor lugar que The Guerrilla Garden, un sitio que ya estaba en el itinerario.

One of the most exciting things about the trip was being able to carry out the "Dr. King Tree" campaign of the NGO "Route of Peace" which consists of planting trees around the world in honor of Martin Luther King; promoting peace in those places.
I started this campaign with a group of friends on January 15 (King's birthday) 2008. It was held in three cities simultaneously: Valencia, Miami and Caracas. Since then, this campaign has traveled to several countries and cities, among them Tenerife.
On this trip, I gave the group the idea to plant a tree. My companions were not so motivated, however our guides were very excited. They told us that it would be a nice gesture on our part as a thank you for the trip and what better place than The Guerrilla Garden, a site that was already on the itinerary.

Guerrilla Garden en una asociación que nació después del Katrina para embellecer a los barrios pobres de New Orleans. Su finalidad es reducir la violencia por medio de mejorar el ambiente, poniendo más bonitas las casas y las calles y subiendo la moral de sus habitantes.

Y justo ahí en ese lugar tan emblemático, con presonas tan dedicadas a su comunidad, en una zona desvastada por el mayor huracán que atacó a EEUU; yo planté un árbol, yo planté un King´s Tree y en palabras de Martin Luther King Jr y lema de la campaña:

Si supiera que el mundo se termina mañana, yo aún plantaría un árbol.

And right there in that iconic place, with people so dedicated to their community, in an area devastated by the biggest hurricane to hit the U.S., I planted a tree, I planted a King's Tree and in the words of Martin Luther King Jr:

Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.

Jazz

Mi sueño de escuchar jazz en vivo se cumplió con creces. En un momento inesperado surgió una invitación por parte de una amiga de alguien del grupo. Así que me pegué al paseo que nos llevaría a la universidad de New Orleans, una de las más importantes para estudiar música en el mundo.

El ambiente era distinto a todo lo que habíamos vivido. Una noche espectacular donde se daría un pequeño concierto en el cafetín de la universidad.

Fuimos solo tres del grupo para esa velada. Uno de los maestros de música más conocido y querido por los estudiantes se apareción para dar un increíble espectáculo. El jazz sonaba grandioso y yo estaba demasiado feliz y no podía creer que todo eso era gratis, lo único que pagué fueron las 3 cervezas que me tomé. Fueron unas cervezas artesanales de distintos sabores de frutas, muy buenas.

Despedida - Goodbye

No todo fue paseo en New Orleans, hubo mucho trabajo y aprendimos bastante, sin embargo fue de las experiencias vividas que más aprendí y no de las charlas, ya que contenían mucha información y se me olvidó 😁

New Orleans es una ciudad muy diferente a todas las he conocido, no solo en EEUU, sino en el mundo. Es bien pequeña pero muy querida y visitada. La callle Bourbon es muy característica por la libertad que existe; te puedes conseguir mujeres con los senos al aire invitándote a entrar en los locales. Hay muchos prostíbulos y discotecas de ambiente.

No es una ciudad que volvería a visitar, a diferencia por ejemplo de Washington y Los Angeles con las que quedé encantado.

También me avisaron que tuviera cuidado porque era muy peligroso, pero como buen caraqueño, no hacemos caso porque nada nos parece más peligroso que Caracas; así qu ecaminé bastante y solo aunque nunca me alejé de la zona céntrica y turística, principalmente porque no veía nada atractivo que buscar.

Otro dato curioso es que en New Orleans fue el primer lugar donde vi un teléfono público en los 25 días de mi viaje por el país. Intenté llamar a mi novia y no supe cómo hacerlo. Nunca la entendí a la operadora y me quitó todas las monedas que tenía 🤣

New Orleans is a city very different from any other I have known, not only in the United States, but in the world. It is very small but very loved and visited. Callle Bourbon is very characteristic for the freedom that exists; you can get women with their breasts in the air inviting you to enter the premises. It is not a city that I would visit again, unlike Washington and Los Angeles, for example, with which I was enchanted.
I was also warned to be careful because it was very dangerous, but as a good Caracas citizen, we don't pay attention because nothing seems more dangerous than Caracas; so I walked around a lot and alone although I never left the downtown and tourist area, mainly because I didn't see anything attractive to look for.
Another curious fact is that New Orleans was the first place where I saw a public phone in the 25 days of my trip around the country. I tried to call my girlfriend and didn't know how to do it. I never understood the operator and she took away all the coins I had 🤣

Así concluye mi viaje por un país increíble. Lo que me queda más claro que nunca, es que nadie puede decir que no le gusta EEUU, es imposible, es demasiado grande y siempre habrá algo que te gusté. Hay demasiada gente y una diversidad impresionante, así que siempre habrá alguien que ames.

Yo conocí muy poco para lo grande que es, pero demasiadas experiencias me llevé en esos días de viaje. Espero volver y conocer mucho más de este gran país. Gracias América!!!

What is clearer to me than ever, is that no one can say that they don't like America, it's impossible, it's too big and there will always be something that you like. There are too many people and an impressive diversity, so there will always be someone you love.
