Churches of Patras / Kirchen in Patras # 11

(Edited)
Time for another little Orthodox church I found when looking for something completely different. This one is not very remarkable from the outside but stands in a great location, as you will see.

The church in question is the Orthodox Church of St. George (Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Γεωργίου) in the village of Mintilogli, south-west of Patras. It stands on top of a hill & has a great view over Patras towards the Gulf of Patras. The exact address is Ath. Ajakoy, Mintilogli 265 00 (Αθ. Ajakoy, 26500 Mintilogli (Αθ.

Unlike many other Orthodox churches here, not only is the architecture fairly unremarkable & not extensively decorated, obviously it's not really taken care of. The colour on the outside is falling off. This is a bit strange, because the Greek Orthodox Church is quite powerful & seemingly also quite wealthy. Perhaps this church is not important enough or I just came there at the wrong time, shortly before the next renovation.

The architecture may not be very impressive, but the view from there certainly is.Architektonisch vielleicht eher enttäuschend, ist die Lage jedoch fantastisch.

From the churchyard you have a great view over the city towards the north coast of the Gulf of Patras. The view alone might make a hike there worthwhile.

In the churchyard is the monument below. The text says: "ΘΝΗΤΟΙ ΤΟΙΣ ΑΘΑΝΑΤΟΙΣ ΓΟΝΥ ΚΛΙΝΑΤΕ". Haven't found a proper translation for this, something about mortals & immortals. It seems to be a Greek saying which is used to commemorate war(riors). In one case, it was engraved on a cannon in a museum.

Like the rest of the outside, the entrance area is far less decorated than other local churches. That's not to say I dislike it, on the contrary. I'm all for a bit of minimalism. & the pillars look genuinely good. Inside, on the other hand, it seems just as decorated as is common. As usual, I didn't venture inside, but in this blog post are some pics which give you an impression.

The only nod to the usual entrance decoration was a picture of St. George killing the dragon. Sadly, this picture covered the plaque with the information about the construction of the church. Couldn't make much sense of what it says, but it seems the church was built in 1887.Ganz ohne Ikonographie kommt man dann doch nicht aus.

Since I again haven't found any proper online information, this will have to do. Mintilogli is a rather rural, hilly area, quite nice for hiking or biking. & if you are in the area, you might want to visit the Church of St. George. (Actually, Mintilogli has a station of the Patras suburban railway #2, so should be easy to reach.) The view alone is worth it.Da ich wieder mal online keine brauchbaren Infos fand, muß dies reichen.

In a few days I will post about the Greek Easter celebrations again. Which have cost me a lot of sleep last week, but are luckily coming to a close tomorrow (or so I hope). But for now, that's it, just a few more pics:In einigen Tagen gibt es einen Beitrag über griechische Osterfeiern, welche mich letzte Woche eine Menge Schlaf kosteten, aber zum Glück morgen zu einem Abschluss kommen (hoffe ich). Jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder:
