Little Hidden Fishing Village in Pattaya.
Living in Pattaya now for past two months has given me a reason to do walkabouts to see and learn of more of where I am living now been talking to a few old timers and it's been quite interesting what they have to say I have always known Pattaya city as a seaside tourist infested madhouse with neon lights everywhere as if someone had uplifted Las Vegas city and came and planted here by the sea it was never like this according to the old timers it use to be a sleepy little fishing village.
The old timers would saying to me that during the Vietnam Conflict they were based here because the US Air Force was stationed here at Utapao Airport Air Base and they were telling me they use to ride horses along Pattaya beaches. You will find a lot of old timer Americans living here in Pattaya as they loved the peacefulness on this paradise and didn't want to return back home after the Vietnam war finished.
I was told by one of the old timers that if I sent myself of and walked south along Jomtien Beach in the later afternoon like about 3 pm it would be low tide and I would be able to walk all the way along the beach till I got to the end were the ocean has a splits into a canal of sea water that runs through the old fishing village so I did that and started my walk along Jomtien Beach it was a good 5km walk from my place before I got to the old fishing village.
I could see my destination from a far distance but it seemed I would never get there but it was quite interesting to see all the neon light resorts which unfortunately were still closed up because of this pandemic meaning no tourist were here. I had finally reached this little hidden fishing village and the fisherman were all on deck preparing there neats and tuning there motors for the coming evening catch while the dogs were taking shade by the fishing boats.
The Kids helping there Dad's bringing in some fresh fishing nets.
This Thai guy came by where the sea water was streaming into the canal obviously he knew the time to do this with the current the smaller fish were getting dragged in he threw his fishing net in and about a few seconds later he was pulling his fishing net back in he had made the catch of the day in one go sorted out the bigger fish from the smaller and threw the smaller ones but in the water he bagged his catch up and when home to cook dinner for his family how's that for a quick free dinner.
Sadly to say now Bang Sare Village it's not the sleepy little fishing village anymore it's in between hotels , resorts and middle class people living in the area but it doesn't seem to worry these old timer fisherman they still carry on as they have been for many years making a living by supplying their fish, squid and crabs to the local restaurants and markets.
While I had come this far I couldn't resist taking a walk around the old once sleepy village to catch up with a few locals as I was walking around I could smell Khao Tom cooking and could hear the fishermen singing and laughing having there dinner before heading out to sea for a nights fishing meanwhile the kids and dogs were out playing on there bikes and having a friendly games it felt like a real nice atmosphere walking and seeing this before my eyes.
It's just how I imaginate it to be all the locals were friendly and welcoming some even wanted to have a chat with you were others were busy doing there work but still had time to cast you a smile and a hello like this local motorbike mechanic.
It was just like been in a country village but you were in a city of surrounding neon lights and high rise buildings but that didn't worry these village people and I was like a little boy, snapping dozens of pictures.
This little coffee, drink bar with rooms out the back was rather cute down towards the sea end of the village a place I would feel comfortable staying.
It was a wonderful day of exploration this old fishing village gave me a glimpse of what life in Pattaya must have been like 30, 40 years ago and the local community was so friendly and hospitable but now it was time for my walk back home along the beach again before high tide came in and catch the sunset on the way home.
