Visit to Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna - Discovering Italy with alequandro

Hello friends, I had been planning to visit Ferrara for some time, because those few times I was there I was in a hurry or had commitments that did not allow me to visit it seriously.

Sooner or later I had to fix it, so I finally made up my mind and in about two hours by car I was in Ferrara.

Ciao amici, era da tempo che avevo in programma di visitare Ferrara, perchè quelle poche volte che ci sono stato ero di fretta o avevo impegni che non mi hanno permesso di visitarla seriamente.

Prima o poi dovevo rimediare, così finalmente mi sono deciso e in circa due ore di auto ero a Ferrara.

I parked the car near the city center and enjoyed a nice walk towards piazza Trento e Trieste.

Ho parcheggiato l'auto vicino al centro città e mi sono godudo una bella passeggiata verso piazza Trento e Trieste.

The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it does not surprise me because it is full of buildings and monuments of the highest historical and artistic value. It certainly takes more than just a day to visit the city.

Il centro storico è patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO e non mi sorprende perchè è ricchissima di edifici e monumenti dall'altissimo valore storico e artistico. Sicuramente ci vuole più di una semplice giornata per visitare la città.

The cathedral is beautiful but to my regret I found that it was closed for renovations! It doesn't matter, so I have one more reason to come back!

La cattedrale è bellissima ma con mio rammarico ho scoperto che era chiusa per restauri! Non importa, così ho un motivo in più per tornarci!

I then carry on because I was curious to see the Estense castle. One thing that surprised me is the amount of bikes there are in the city. Most people use them as their main means of transport for short trips and you have to be careful because it is easy to collide with a cyclist from as many as there are!

Ho quindi deciso di proseguire perchè ero curioso di vedere il castello Estense. Una cosa che mi ha sorpreso è la quantità di bici che ci sono nella città. La maggior parte delle persone le usano come mezzo di trasporto principale per i piccoli spostamenti e dovete stare attenti perchè è facile scontrarsi con un ciclista da quanti ce ne sono!

The castle is a majestic fortress surrounded by water with 4 towers at the corners.

The castle was built in 1385 and today is used as a museum building.

After having walked the length and breadth of the outside of the castle, I decided to enter and with great surprise in the inner courtyard some very interesting contemporary works were exhibited.

Dopo aver percorso in lungo e largo l'esterno del castello, ho deciso di entrare e con gran sorpresa nel cortile interno erano esposte delle opere contemporanee molto interessanti.

The exhibition is the work of Sara Bolzani and Nicola Zamboni who have been working on the monumental sculptural group entitled Humanity for over twenty years.

I didn't go in to visit the castle because I had other plans in mind, so I went outside and headed towards an ancient Roman road: Corso Ercole I ° d'Este

Non sono entrato a visitare il castello perchè avevo altri programmi in mente, così sono uscito all'esterno e mi sono diretto verso una antica strada romana: Corso Ercole I° d'Este

The peculiarity of this road built in 1461 is that Renaissance noble palaces overlook its entire length, in particular the Palazzo dei Diamanti is very interesting and you will notice it in the next photos.

La particolarità di questa strada realizzata nel 1461 è che per tutta la sua lunghezza si affacciano palazzi nobiliari rinascimentali, in particolare molto interessante è il palazzo dei Diamanti che lo noterete nelle prossime foto.

Its main feature is the external ashlar in the shape of diamond points, which give the building its name. The approximately 8,500 blocks of pink-veined white marble create valuable perspective effects thanks to the different shape of the tips, oriented differently according to their location in order to better capture the light.

La sua caratteristica principale è il bugnato esterno a forma di punte di diamante, che danno il nome al palazzo. I circa 8.500 blocchi di marmo bianco venato di rosa creano pregevoli effetti prospettici grazie alla diversa conformazione delle punte, orientate diversamente a seconda della collocazione in modo da catturare al meglio la luce.

I decided to continue walking out of curiosity and I came to a beautiful park with old trees. A nice place to get out of the urban environment and relax.

Ho deciso di continuare a camminare per curiosità e sono giunto ad un bel parco con alberi secolari. Un bel posto per uscire dall'ambiente urbano e rilassarsi.

The photos taken with the smartphone do not render the slightest, but there was this ginko biloba tree that something incredible.
It was giant and the leaves had a yellow color that stood out from the green of the other plants. Stupendous.

Era gigante e le foglie avevano un colore giallo che spiccava rispetto al verde delle altre piante. Stupendo.

Checking on google maps if there was anything interesting to see, I saw that not far away was the monumental cemetery of the Certosa, I wanted to see it.

Controllando su google maps se c'era qualcosa di interessante da vedere, ho visto che non molto lontano c'era il cimitero monumentale della Certosa, volevo vederlo.

Without knowing it, to reach the cemetery, I came to Piazza Ariostea, 200 meters long and 100 meters wide.

At the center of the square stands the sixteenth-century column designed by Ercole Grandi from Ferrara on which, since 1833, the statue of Ludovico Ariosto, the poet from whom the square takes its name, has been placed.

Senza saperlo per raggiungere il cimitero, sono capitato alla piazza Ariostea lunga 200 metri e larga 100.

Al centro della piazza si alza la colonna cinquecentesca disegnata dal ferrarese Ercole Grandi sulla quale, dal 1833, è stata posta la statua di Ludovico Ariosto, il poeta dal quale la piazza prende il nome.

After 10 minutes, I was at the cemetery, monumental.
The curved arcades that symmetrically delimit the lawn are really impressive.

Dopo 10 minuti, ero al cimitero, monumentale.
Davvero d'impatto i portici curvi che delimitano simmetricamente il prato.

Here is the church of San Cristoforo, which I imagined more interesting internally, perhaps because the external portico had raised my expectations.

I went in to visit the church, but I didn't stay for more than 10 minutes, it has a somewhat bare environment, better to visit the cemetery in my opinion.

Sono entrato a visitare la chiesa, ma non sono rimasto per più di 10 minuti, presenta un ambiente un po' spoglio, meglio visitare il cimitero a mio parere.

Under the portico it is interesting to see the ancient tombs also of famous people of Ferrara.

Sotto al porticato è interessante vedere le antiche tombe anche di persone celebri di Ferrara.

In this cemetery that extends for 10 hectares there is also the tomb of the famous director Michelangelo Antonioni.

It would have been interesting to continue exploring, but it was late I had at least a 40 minute walk back to the car.

In questo cimitero che si estende per 10 ettari è presente anche la tomba del celebre regista Michelangelo Antonioni.

Sarebbe stato interessante continuare ad esplorarlo, ma era tardi avevo almeno 40 minuti a piedi per tornare all'auto.
