'Member VHS Tapes?

avatar

I have been doing some more spring cleaning this week and I came across some old VHS tapes. You guys remember them?

I acquired these guys when I was in college from the good ol' Deseret Industries (DI). For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it's a thrift store here in Utah. I'm pretty sure they have locations throughout the Rockies and the West Coast. But, I have never encountered one outside of the state myself.

Judging from the selection, I'm pretty sure they were conscious picks. The chance of a random bundle having some of the best classics is too unlikely for me to believe. It's a shame that I no longer own a VCR. I remember those things were everywhere in all the rented apartments I've lived in. It's somewhat amusing to think that a bunch of university students have those things. They don't even know how valuable they are. At least, not yet. I do wonder if there's a market for antique techs around where I am.

As you can see, I picked most of these tapes up for a hefty price of $0.50 each. I should preserve them better. Who knows? They might be worth more someday. There's a problem, though. I have no idea if they are still playable and part of me is afraid they might break if I tried. Well, I will have to get myself a VCR again.

Anyways, they were a pleasant find in my hoard. It makes you wonder how many kids today know what VHS tapes are. I know my toddler has no idea what they are. It's like the origin of the save icon in most software we use nowadays.

Saturdays tended to be the days when my father was going and renting some tapes. One for him and one for me. Great times!

I don't think there's any place that I know of that still rents out tapes these days.

But yeah, I remember the days of picking up tapes too.

My uncle was a movie projectionist in the 1920s and 30s. He owned one of the earliest home movie cameras ever made. His daughter put together a tape of his early movies (family pictures). I don't know what to do with it. It's precious, like a time machine. There must be a way to transfer those images onto something computers can read. It's probably quite simple and I should do that before I'm gone and then this record will be lost.

This blog motivates me to do some investigating.

don't think old tech will be worth much in the future, unless it's something super rare than becomes desirable for collectors

When I was a kid one of my neighbors' father had a MASSIVE collection of Betamax tapes... we gotta go back in time a bit to member this but there was a time when Betamax and VHS were competing for marketshare... despite being a superior machine VHS won the battle. I also knew a lot of people that had really large VHS collections and then DVD. It is difficult at any point in time to imagine a complete overhaul of the industry but now when I look at my video game collection I only have ONE actual box. The rest was all downloaded.

I think the only DVD's that I still have somewhere in an attic are collector's editions of LOTR and Evil Dead. I probably gave all the others to charity a long time ago.

It's still pretty crazy to think that we've lived through several overhauls in our childhood alone.

Haha I'll have to do some digging. I'm pretty sure my parents would have cassette tapes.

Some great movies there. I've got a couple of boxes of VHS tapes in the attic, I haven't played them in almost 20 years. I'll be moving house soon so they'll probably be sacrificed during the move. I hope I can find them a good home rather than trash them...

The problem with tape formats is sooner or later the player would eat them. For VCR's you had to practically take the damn thing apart to get the tape out and then you had to clean the heads. We were more rugged humans in those days. Now we whine about download times.

Haha I’m familiar with tape being eaten.

I think my siblings and I, at one point, were able to extract the tape without taking the VCR apart.

Those were the days. Kids these days will never know.

That is an awesome VHS collection. I'm sure you could post a lot-sale and double your money. Buy a broken Swatch Watch or something good for the air fryer with that payload.

I have a VCR TV/VCR duo. I use it to watch Terminator 2, slide guitar lessons, and Jackie Chan movies. The TV also has RCA inputs. Someday, I hope to connect my PS1 and play a few favorite games.

May de Shwarts be wit'chou.

Love them!

In fact I still own and use a couple of VHS cameras for my more fashinable video work. It looks amazing, its actually desirable and it can be funny when people ask you"what kind of filter is this?" :P

Surprised yes!

It's currently trending again. Many well known brand the past 2-3 months have released content fetauring at least some VHS content.

I remember I saw LEVis, Tommy Hilfiger etc.

It's a good mix and at the end of the day, not everything needs to be 4K :)

Yeap there's weird and very polarised trend within the commercial world now.

One end is what's looking more human and on the other end the very high end CGI stuff, mostly requested by big pharma and banks.

We did an insane one were we built massive green screen walls, 7 days shoot CGI and video and photography. Pretty intense but very interesting stuff! More than 20 bitcoins production cost that one :D
