Breathtaking

Her eyes were closing, her chin fell towards her chest when the blaring of a horn jolted her.

He was back. Finally! She had waited for him since... since... She tried hard to remember the last time she had seen him. She grabbed her walking stick and carefully shove the curtain aside... Yes, it was definitely his car. The yellow monster was parked in front of her house and she heard his footsteps... the opening of the front door and how it was carefully closed. Both hands held the stick on her lap as she waited for him.

A pillowcase covered his head and she thought that it would do the job.
It was one of the silk ones, still brand new. She had never liked them, it fitted him perfectly.
A quick look at the clock told her it was time to put the kettle on. Four o'clock was tea-time and nothing could stop her from her tea and biscuits.
She closed the door behind her as she left the room and sang the lullaby she always sang as she was in a good mood.

At the kitchen table, she nipped from her tea with closed eyes.
This was the best moment of the day. It was so peaceful. The two biscuits she saved for her second cup.
The kitchen had always been her favorite place. Already as a child, she had loved to sit there and patiently watched her granny doing her work. Cleaning, cooking, the laundry... Once finished she put the kettle on. She smiled while thinking of all the good memories of her past. The world had changed but she hadn't. She knew how to take care of and enjoy life. The new age didn't scare her, neither the fact they stopped making plastic bags. A long life brought her survival skills and taught her there was a solution to each problem.

After she drank her tea she wobbled back to the room.

"I told you", she muttered as she poked with her walking stick into the man at her feet, "the silk does not take my breath away".
