A Second Chance Left At The Door #Freewrite

It was during Christmas time when they lost the child they just had. This was after years of different fertility specialists and treatments and some empty wallets. Then after just two hours of being alive, she died.

She found out before him and broke down wondering out loud what else was there to do. They had done their best and still it wasn't enough. Parenthood had refused to accommodate their willing souls however badly they wanted it.

He picked her up from the hospital floor while trying to comfort her but he himself was struggling with their unprecedented loss. He heard himself ask how a daughter can be denied her father's pride and protection and her mother's love.

...end of five minutes.

The uber ride was awkwardly tearful... their driver kept peeking through a mirror and openly wondering if they were fine. Neither of them could talk to him.

After getting home and being unable to leave their long grey couch for the waiting refurbished bedroom, there was a hurried loud knock on the door and footsteps could be heard retreating to wherever.

He rose angrily and headed for the door flipping the Christmas lights off.

When he flung the door open, his eyes were looking for whomever was responsible for disturbing their already disturbed space and give them a piece of his mind.

It was her cry that forced his eyes on his doorstep and there was the most delicate child in pink.

She had come to see why he wasn't yelling at the night as she had expected it when he headed for the door.

And there he was frozen at the doorstep with a child in his arms.

She was dumbfounded and before she could find the words to ask anything, he gave her a note.

You were three beds from mine in the maternity ward so I am aware of what happened. This child has been gifted to the both of you because you will be better parents than I would ever be. All the very best with everything. PS; She needs a diaper change asap.

She took the child from his arms and headed for the bedroom as he closed the door after another quick neighbourhood sweep then flipped the Christmas lights back on and followed his wife and their second chance at parenthood to the bedroom.
