North Pole Fiches

This is a fiction story

In The Desert, we can't remember your name
The alarm clock on Giuseppe's cell phone rang like it does every morning at 6:30.

The least consolation for that early riser was to hear at least the verses of a song known to him and above all to his taste.

Giuseppe, called Beppe, by some called Gio, by others called Peppino, but for all of them Giuseppe "Cucù", given his punctiliousness and precision, knew very well how his every day would start.

Cuckoo knew exactly how that January 4th would start.

Usual alarm clock. Usual time.

5 Minutes to bed.

Coffee, rigorously prepared at the moment with his inseparable old style mocha.

Reading the front page of his favorite newspaper online. A look at her facebook page. A look at the sports page. Coffee.

Breakfast finished, the croissant would be taken at the bar a few hours later, and Cuckoo heads to the bathroom.

Dressing ritual. Watch the clock.

Joseph makes the bed undone and is ready to go to work.

He knew exactly how he would start on January 4th. He didn't know how the day would go on and how it would end.

The frost in Bologna was deadly. It felt like the North Pole and the snow was almost blocking the circulation.

At 4 p.m. on the dot his childhood friend Giacomo called him to tell him that that evening the famous table that had accompanied Giuseppe and Giacomo for about 10 years would be reconstituted.

At Carmine's house he would spread the "green cloth". There would be the reunion and that event had already been renamed "Fiches al Polo Nord".

Carmine, Giuseppe, Giacomo, Salvatore and Ugo would meet after 12 years and they would start a non-stop poker night.

5 cards in hand, not 5 cards on the ground.
So said the invitation prepared by Carmine himself.

Total fibrillation.

Everyone gave their OK in no time.

9 p.m. and everyone, right on time, found themselves on the doorstep of Carmine's house.

Bottles of wine, a limoncello, a bottle of cointreau and 2 of coca cola. Unfailing packages of Marlboro bought by Ugo for everyone and the novelty of Cuban cigars brought directly from Varadero by Carmine.

A rejoicing.

A few toasts for old times' sake and at 21:30 all ready to sit down at the table.

Everything was like it was then. Same chips, same green cloth, same guys as always.

What had obviously changed was how much money you were willing to invest.

The stakes that years before were a few euros now had become stakes of tens of euros.

The 10 euro raises had become 100 euro raises.

Everyone had a job, everyone had a gap in the value of the money without even realising it.

Around midnight Carmine was ahead by about 1200 and even Ugo, Giacomo and Salvatore were not in a bad way.

"Cuckoo was below more than 2000 euro, just him who, in spite of his friends, was in a not exceptional economic situation. He who had invested everything in a startup gone bad and who had been sucked by interest and blackberries to pay only 3 years before and who now lived in uncomfortable conditions covered by a great dose of humility. His lifelong friends had no idea what Giuseppe was going through and seemed to mock the money flowing on the table.

Giuseppe had the instinct to get up and stop the bleeding.

He could have sustained that loss but he couldn't have gone any further.

He called the "double round" but the boys persuaded him to pull until 3 o'clock.

They hadn't seen each other for so long. They'd been waiting a long time for that night that had brought them together all their youth. They were all sincerely happy and thrilled to have each other. And so Joseph agreed and until 3:00 he was able to limit the damage.

There were only 7 games left until the end and when Ugo dealt the cards, Giuseppe started to "trifle" them, as they say on his side.

Jack of hearts, Q of hearts, K of hearts, ace of hearts, 8 of spades.

And now what?

Beautiful but worthless cards, those.

In the meantime, Salvatore is raising Carmine's opening price of 50 euros with 200 euros.

Beppe decided to go and see and change a card.

Carmine and Salvatore changed a card too.

They must have had a double pair, thought Beppe.

He tripled his cards.

Another 8 had arrived, but this time it was of hearts.

Carmine whispered "word", giving the task to Salvatore.

It was time for Salvo to attack.

300 euros he said.

Beppe thought that this was a sign of destiny. Not only would he make up for the loss, but perhaps he could have won a thousand euros and more if he had played it well.

I'll see your 300 and raise you 500.
The hall froze over like we were at the North Pole.

It was the biggest raise of the night. There were over 2000 euros on the table at the time.

They all passed but not Salvatore.

I see your raise and raise you 800.
Giuseppe gasped.

Fear and also an euphoria of those who knew

Cucù sapeva esattamente come sarebbe iniziato quel 4 Gennaio.

Solita sveglia. Solita ora.

Occhio all'orologio.

Era tutto come allora.

Carmine sussurrò "parola", cedendo l'incombenza a Salvatore.

Life isn't a train. It's a shit tornado full of gold..png
