Day 854: 5 Minute Freewrite: Friday - Prompt: eye witness

When I was out shopping yesterday, I saw a woman pushing her baby in a stroller. No news in and of itself, people produce little versions of themselves all the time. But it was a camo stroller.

Did I miss a cultural memo? Back when I had little kids, almost all strollers had solid-colored fabric. Once in a while, you’d see one with bunnies or unicorns printed on the fabric. But camouflage?

What, you’re planning on taking your bundle of joy along when you and Elmer Fudd go off to hunt wabbits? Wouldn’t blaze orange be a better idea? Hell, even that might not help. I have a coworker who got shot in the arm when his buddy mistook him for a squirrel. A 240 pound squirrel with a beer belly wearing blaze orange.

But, yeah, okay, a camo stroller might be handy if you needed to blend in somewhere, but how likely is that? You’re a cop on a stakeout in a rural area and need to blend in with the birch and jack pine but your babysitter called to say that she had to have the day off because her boyfriend needed a ride to meet with his parole officer?
