"What do you see" - A 5 minute freewrite

"What do you see, Lasarkai?"
The voice of his master was steady but insistent.
"Clipper." the student replied. "You know I hate that name. Call me clipper."
"What do you see?" the voice was more insistent this time, an edge of annoyance to it.
"Nothing. People, moving about, as they always do. Nothing ever changes here."
The master sighed. "Look harder. What do you see?"
Clipper felt annoyance surging within him, and a retort nearly stumbled out of his mouth unbidden. He forced himself to stop. To breathe.
"The old man outside of Ratan's has been smoking the same pipe for the last twenty minutes. It's not even lit anymore."
His master smiled. "Good, what else?"
Urchins darted through the marketplace, thriving amid the chaos of busy hawkers and sales of items.
"Urchins." he finally replied. "They're everywhere."

My first 5-minute freewrite! This was inspired by a random character I generated using a Java program I developed for D&D, DMing, and Writing. In my head, I was envisioning this man being trained as a spy or possibly a thief or assassin - but I was too slow to complete that scene before my five minutes was up. Perhaps I will take him further in the future. We will see.

Here is a link to the 5-minute freewrite challenge.

Well written @oblivioncubed, and do continue with this very interesting story, it has a lot of potential to expand, and I like this theme with an appentice getting trained by a master, it's awesome.

Welcome to the freewriters!! So glad that you are writing with us. And I will let you in on a secret. Many of the freewriters completely ignore the 5-minute ding and just keep writing :)
