"You used to be fun." -- a five-minute #freewrite

"Hey, Jenny. Jenny! Watch this --Jenny!"

"No."

Jenny rolled her eyes and turned back to the laptop, squinting through the sun's glare on the screen.

"Quick, turn around --now. Jenny!" Joey shrieked, a shriek that was quickly cut short by an oof as a thud reverberated across the wooden floors. "Aww, you missed it. You would've laughed your socks off... oh, you're not wearing any socks. You would've laughed your knickers off!"

This was impossible. Jenny slammed the laptop lid shut and climbed to her feet, a fierce glower fixed across her face as she eyed Joey's lopsided smirk.

"I don't laugh, Joey; I glare, and I do my best to ignore your shenanigans."

"Pfft, you used to be fun."

Jenny spun around and stopped down the hallway, whipped open her bedroom door, then threw herself onto the plain, boring mattress that served as her bed. A further reminder that this living situation was supposed to be temporary.

Pfft, you used to be fun.

Burying her head beneath a caseless pillow, Jenny sobbed.

Had she ever been a fun person? She couldn't say. She didn't even remember what it was like to giggle, to chortle, to release a full-bellied laugh out into the world. All that she knew were Joey's peals of laughter echoing through the night while she tried to sleep, or when he was about to torment her beyond compare with the unrealistic reality that formed around him.

When was the last time she'd even smiled?

Tears blurred her vision.

"Buggered if I know," she muttered beneath her breath.

Hullooo! Yesterday was Day 905 of @mariannewest's five-minute #freewrite challenge. The prompt for it was -- peals of laughter -- and this depressing thing is what emerged just as the eggtimer website beep-a-beeped at me.

This was yesterday's challenge, posted belatedly because Hive was having issues with images. 😭 But you can find today's challenge -- AND JOIN IN!!!!! -- at the following link:

Reading through all my Joey and Jenny things, I personally love Joey and I can't stand Jenny. Sad really. She portrays all of my negative emotions. She used to be just a world-weary person smirking and shaking her head whenever her silly housemate did something... silly; now she's a bit of a bitch.

And they are quarantined together!!! That's how I read it. Perhaps the whole Jenny Joey thing has been leading to Jenny's re-entering the world of humans and being lovable again. I love them both - they are two sides of the same coin. Joey does go too far sometimes - the orange paint on Jenny's only business suit when she was on her way to a job interview, for instance.

I hope she gets a good cry, and they have a moment of reconciliation (just so they both remember what that is) then snap back to their shenanigans, because they are very entertaining!

(Edited)

My original goal for these two, once they kept reappearing and demanding to be written, was some sort of horrible, comedic love story. 😂

Unfortunately Jenny takes on my moods and now she's depressed, bitchy, and just wants to be alone.

Need to snap her out of it and get her back to Sardonic And Somewhat Amused...

somewhat amused! yes that's it. They both had more fun when she was somewhat amused after an event.

Yes. That's definitely what's been missing lately. I need to get her humour back. Maybe in May -- I want these two in a proper story, and by golly I'm going to do it!

oooh, is Jenny like an alter-ego, or a mirror, or, or, a canary in a coal mine, showing the reader how Kaelci is feeling in the latest rom-com episode? What a revelation/confession/ insight! I personally love Joey and I can't stand Jenny. Sad really. She portrays all of my negative emotions. That's powerful. She used to be just a world-weary person smirking and shaking her head whenever her silly housemate did something... silly; now she's a bit of a bitch. Um, sounds like what happens to so many of us women as we turn 30, then 40, then 50... with every decade, more of the crabby old lady (or wise old woman) emerges and less of the silly, foolish, idealistic, reckless girl remains. Maybe this story is a very needed social commentary or cautionary tale (with laughs! and rainbows, and orange paint on the interview suit for the office job!). Your Jenny-Joey dynamic and the way they keep demanding another story from you inspires me to revisit DeLorean and her pipsqueak cousin Rory (third cousin, actually). Thank you for Jenny and Joey and for the personal revelation! You inspire me - and you make me laugh! Today's episode, however, we aren't laughing. We're eager to see why Jenny is sad, and where her funny bone has gone. Well done!

I'm glad to inspire you! 😁

I really hate to admit, but yes, Jenny is becoming me more and more every time I write something with her in it!! My mirror in written word. It's pretty terrible.

Maybe through her story, reacting to Joey's antics, I can find myself again before I become an old witch lurking in the wilds wanting to only be alone and casting curses on they who encroach upon my personal space. Maybe that is Jenny's purpose.

deepthinking

Well written @kaelci, and I understand that this is a continuation and they are living together due to the pandemic?, yeah being forced together like that can create a lot of different reactions in people, some go bananas and others retract into themselves, very realistic story, thanks for sharing, it's awesome.

Thank you!! :)

I'm not too sure why they're living together yet -- they've been stuck together since a freewrite sometime in 2018. Though, that could be interesting, writing them as in stuck together due to the pandemic... hmm! :D
