"Morning Coffee" a weekend freewrite

avatar

Yay! It’s the weekend!!! So that can really only mean ONE THING!!

It’s time for the #weekendfreewrite!

Each week @mariannewest gives three #freewrite prompts and you have to write for five minutes using each prompt - but no cheating and looking at the next prompt UNTIL you have finished with the first one!

You can find this week’s first prompt here:

Mindy McHorse took a big slurp from her first cup of coffee of the day. She then spat it out.

In my face.

"Fuck!" I shouted, standing up and wiping at my face.

"It's disgusting," Mindy said. "Get me another one. And don't buy it from that place round the corner. I want the good shit from three blocks away." She stared at me. "And it better be hot."

I dabbed at my face with a handkerchief I had pulled out of my pocket.

"Yes, Mindy." I picked up her cup and poured the offending coffee down the sink, then picked up my wallet and left the house.

Mindy was a fucking bitch. Why the hell did I let her treat me this way? I stomped down the street, my thoughts racing ahead of me. She was always nasty to me.

You let her treat you this way, a little voice said from a dark cupboard in the back of my mind, because you are a fucking pussy.

I recognised the voice, of course. Uncle Pete. Not my real uncle. One of my mother's abusive partners who used to hit me if I looked at him wrong, and then whack me again if I dared cry.

"Over fifty Hacks for a healthier Happier you," a man screamed as he waved a pamphlet in ever bywalker's face, ahead of me.

The man looked like someone I knew. Dave. Another one of my mother's ex-lovers. Dave had been alright. Mad as a box of frogs, but nice enough.

I peered closely at the man as I passed him and he stared back, his arm falling to the side, dropping the pamphlets, as though my stare was a weapon and I had disarmed him.

Not Dave.

Just another lunatic on the streets of our city.

When I got to It's Coffee, Bitch!, Mindy's preferred coffee shop, there was a queue stretching around the block.

Well, maybe I'm exaggerating.

There were three people standing outside, maybe five inside. A young man stood looking at his phone, ahead of a couple who were clearly having an argument.

"I don't know why you have to start," the woman hissed at the man.

"I didn't start," he said. "You did."

The woman had a red scarf wrapped around one of her wrists. I wondered if it meant something - like a ribbon people wear to announce they support a cause - or was just some kind of fashion statement. I didn't really keep up with fashion. It was hard enough to keep up with the important things in life.

A man left the coffee shop, and the man with the phone looked up long enough to take his place in It's Coffee, Bitch! leaving me alone with the arguing couple who now had stopped arguing but were throwing each other looks like daggers.

I wondered how long they had been together. I wondered how they managed to argue.

It was something I never had the courage to do. Not face to face, anyway. I was great behind a keyboard.

A troll, they called me sometimes.

Another person left It's Coffee, Bitch! and the couple squeezed into the shop. I stood on the pavement and watched the world go by, wondering if Mindy McHorse was going to be in a better mood when I returned.

I doubted it. She rarely achieved the status of Good Mood before midday.

As usual I wrote the freewrite in five minutes using themostdangerouswritingapp.com and then copied and pasted it into a googledoc, tied it up a bit.

This is great, @felt.buzz
Great origin story for a troll. Aren't we all looking for a better "us"?
I loved the story. It flows nicely.
I wonder if the very name that was given to the character influenced our conceiving her as a badass.
