Chapter XXI Twisted Truth

Rain checks

The scheduled day to meet with the manager of the city's main bank had arrived, and the three of them were there waiting to be attended to. Andrew knew that the moment was very important to them, so he extracted some rain checks from his wallet to use to attend the softball game in which the leading city team that would play against the selection of another city would participate.

Mindy thanking her for her deference, she commented that at that moment the most important thing is the real game they were going to have. Angeline took the gift without much illusion since her mind was clouded by the flood of memories she had of her father.

A few minutes from the manager's office, his assistant came out who, despite not knowing the reason for their visit, ordered them to be restrained about what they would say to their boss, since this is a very busy person who doesn't like to waste time.

Upon entering the manager's office, they saw an elderly, obese man sitting down. He greeted them and asked them to take a seat, and he immediately began to question them:

"Tell me the reason for your visit, very rarely do people come to this office"

Taking the floor, Andrew replied:

"Mr. Paul, we came for the case of the sailor Thomas, who has some very important documents stored in the safe, he passed away, but here are his daughters to whom I leave a notarized authorization"

When he finished speaking, he gave him the notarized document with the authorization.

Mr. Paul read it carefully, approving the request to go to open Thomas's safe, took the keys to the safe where the boxes were stored and a sheet containing the security keys to open the combination of the same and he asked them to accompany to the vault, located in the basement of the building.

After descending the stairs, they were presented with an armored door with a security guard sitting inside a sentry box, all had to present their fingers to a biological reader to be authorized, the manager did the same. Finally the door opened and in front of them a gallery full of numbered compartments appeared, the manager immediately went to the place with the box assigned to Thomas.

Placing the keys the door of the box was released and from there he extracted a container that he placed on a table, there when lifting its cover, they could begin to review its content consisting of documents that certified its properties and a small notebook in which it explained the location of an investment fund that he established in a tax haven, reflected the exact address and with whom they should contact to rescue the money. At that time both Mindy and Angeline, appreciating the importance of what they were reviewing, decided to inform the bank manager that they would take it. The manager, agreeing to his request, made them fill out some forms in which they had to place their fingerprints, finally leaving there thanking him for his efforts.

Upon leaving the bank, Andrew felt that it had been worth the time they spent. For their part, Mindy and Angeline left thoughtful evaluating the care that their father had taken to leave them a legacy. Once they were in the subway car, both in unison laughed out loud, thanking Andrew for accompanying them, showing that he was earning positive points in their favor.

They all agreed that Mindy would keep the documents rescued from the bank in her house and they only had to plan the next steps to recover all the legacy that Thomas had left them.

Family ties

Angeline the next day when entering the main room of the nursing home, she miss that her friend Charles was not there, her heart skipped a beat, since she presumed that perhaps he had already passed away, so she immediately went to check If he was in his bedroom, the bed had already been made there, an intense light came in through the window, so she was momentarily scared, without appreciating the moment of peace that was taking place, she left there and went to speak to the manager, there in front of him, his friend was sitting, when she saw him, she said:

"Charles, what a joy to find you again, I see that you are recovered"

He jokingly said to her:

"I have only been given the last chance to reach a safe harbor, however, on the last crossing my boat almost sank"

Everyone in the office laughed at Charles's new joke.

The manager, seeing that Angeline cared about Charles asked captiously:

"Do you have family ties?"

Angeline, even without having completely overcome her scare, replied:

"Of course, he is my uncle, he was like a brother to my father, he always talked to me about him and he thanked him for everything he had done for him, this is the twisted truth"

Charles, without completely overcoming the remorse he felt for having betrayed the trust that Thomas had had with him, got up from the seat and hugged Angeline tightly. The manager upon seeing the scene asked them to leave, since their scenes were not allowed in his office. They apologized and left the room going to the living room where Charles where he usually sat.

Gaps

Andrew arrived that day at his new office all the employees began to pay homage to him, he unaccustomed to so much attention asked them to stop being silly and attend to their work, that day they had many activities planned for them to execute in the shortest possible time.

Surprised that their new boss spoke to them in that way, they remained engrossed in their jobs. Andrew then picked up the phone and first contacted the manager of the nursing home to request via email he will send him the technical economic report to establish the urgent needs of the residents. He began to write several communications that he would direct to different personalities of the city to request financial support for the cause of achieving a new headquarters for the nursing home. Once when he finished writing them, he passed the draft to his secretary so that she could put them in the official format of the mayor's office to take them to the mayor to stamp his signature.

After finishing that part of the work, Andrew remembered that he had to call his students to verify the progress they had made in the investigation into the historical memory of the city, while recommending that they visit the nursing home for a survey, previously elaborated, they will extracted information about the city's past, from which until that moment many information gaps remained to be resolved.

Pain

When Mindy returned to her house, still compromised by the visit she had made with Angeline and Andrew to the bank, after opening the front door to the house, there a photo of when her father was young seemed as if scrutinized her. She collected all the documents that had been scattered on the stair landing, with difficulty reached her father's room where she carefully placed them in the closet, in the morning she would review them in more detail before his sister came again.

Questions

Even Charles that day was feeling somewhat unwell with a slight fever, so he went to the infirmary in the center to be attended by the nurse, there she measured the temperature with a thermometer and told him that it was nothing for him. Returning to the living room, there were two young men who reminded him of their grandchildren waiting next to the place where he always sat. He greeted them, asking them what they were doing there. One of them replied:

"We came to ask you a few questions"

Charles, amazed that they might be from the police because of his conscience for Thomas, said:

"I am too old to be questioned regarding my guilt"

Laughing at the new occurrence of Charles, they stressed that the questions had nothing to do with him, but with the past of the city. Charles in a thick voice told them he was going to attend to them.

They sat down, opened their notebooks and from there began to complete a questionnaire with the questions they had previously prepared.
