Airport – #freewrite 22, Day 1018

I’ve passed through several airports in my four decades on the planet. I wouldn’t say that I’m well-travelled though; I can probably count the number of times I’ve been on a plane on one hand.

One of my first times on a plane was back in the summer of 1995. I had gone AWOL from boot camp in Oklahoma (I took the bus home to Indiana from there; that’s another adventure), and I had decided to take my Army recruiter’s advice and return to camp to get officially discharged.

I flew out of O’Hare in Chicago. My parents drove me there. I remember as the plane took off being able to watch them in the terminal as they watched the plane.

Dad put his arm around Mom, as consolation, I guess. I remember she shrugged him off. It was pretty clear she blamed him for the situation. Not sure why; the guy had spent my entire growing up telling me never to join the military.

It’s maybe the one thing he was right about, but of course I had to find out for myself.

Boots again

Never thought of free association as something that would carry over from one day to the next, but yesterday’s freewrite prompt was one boot, and today I’m writing about boot camp, through an apparently unrelated prompt.

I wonder if I can develop this thread through the week?
