AER Cameo: Beard

avatar

That was literally what @holoz0r asked for. I'm terrible at facial hair so...

I made a bearded dragon x_x

I think it evolved the crazy tail for prey trapping purposes. Also tried out using the tilted pencil brush as @veryspider apparently liked using it quite a lot. I can kind of see why but unlike some people I can't draw.

I gave the bearded dragon to cameo holo who is a dropbear (casual observer won't be able to tell unless he shows his teeth or they annoy him) with a beard. The bearded dragon makes the beard look longer because it likes looping around his neck.

I did want to make cameo holo "clean shaven" and have the bearded dragon provide the beard but couldn't quite get that to work XD

Did I mention I'm terrible at facial hair? x_x and please excuse my inability to draw cameras.

Also tried out a different colouring technique to fake radiosity, kind of worked out okayish but was the opposite of quick.

I remembered at some point while colouring that this base model's legs were too long especially for this character who is supposed to be a bit more on the shorter more solid side (all the better for ramming you into the ground if you make him mad my dear).

This post also appears on my blog.

Want a crowd character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) Everything you need to know is (probably) here and if it isn't just ask (sorry the link goes offsite to my blog where the layout is how I want rather than the one here which is only here because the original one was).

Thanks for looking! ^_^

I don't trust that lizard. Looks like it has a hostage.

LoL! XD The "hostage" doesn't look too bothered ;D

This lizard has a particularly long tail (a lot of things in my head-universe seem to have particularly long tails x_x) and I otherwise don't think current day lizards act like this but sneks will quite happily wrap around your neck for warmth. One of my friends' kids had a pet snake which they casually popped onto my shoulder (I don't know whether they were hoping I'd freak out or whether they remembered that I like snakes but either way they didn't tell me they were doing it and I was quite content) and ended up wearing the thing as a tie (it wrapped around my neck but wasn't big enough to be a scarf and then looked around doing the tongue thing).

Would prefer snakes over lizards on the shoulder, the claws hurt. My last python experience was frustrating seeing it was already too big to carry, had a diameter close to an adult human male's thigh. Would try to strangle me with love from the neck when it got bigger. Died after escaping from the cage. Apparently the locals think snakes as food instead of pets.

I think they wrap around the neck for warmth as it's instincts tell it to do for the thrill of the hunt. It's that or just tamed. Would want a pet snake but high maintenance as not getting some human touch can make it cranky and revert to the wild state.

You must have been carrying bigger lizards than I was :O I've had some small lizards (possibly even bearded dragons but I'm not really sure XD) sitting on my hand or shoulder and the claws didn't bother me in the slightest.

That's a big snake O_O guess it would just have to coil on you while you were sitting down, otherwise I guess it's good weight training? Poor snek :S everything is food if someone is hungry enough or just has the taste for it. I think I told you about the one time we got served something and we got told it was chicken and I was like that is not a chicken body part x_x

Well they're ectothermic and you're endothermic so you're a nice heat source when they don't have a nice warm rock or a burrow or a heat lamp. Had to look up if pythons did the constrictor thing (I don't know a lot about snakes), perhaps there could have been an element of "am I hungry enough for this big a meal" about it XD

I'm always a hostage to the camera. So long as the lizard doesn't interfere with that, its okay!

I think it just needs some glare and highlights on the lens and you'd identify it much easier!

Probably, I do sketchies super quick though so gloss tends to not happen ^_^

I do like the way the sketch turned out overall!
Probably should have lead with that xD

I love how the bearded dragon smoothly transmorphs into @holoz0r s facial hear. Never heard of a dropbear. Thought he looked like a bearded koala who likes to take pictures, shoot film.

Nice one!

I do love to shoot pictures, but I haven't shot film in years. My wife is going to love this illustration! :D

Thanks ^_^

Dropbears are fictional totally real things that Aussies warn visitors about. They look exactly like koalas but are carnivorous and got the name because they are ambush predators who drop out of trees on top of their prey, knocking it to the ground and at least stunning if not outright killing it.

@holoz0r may or may not remember this one too XD

They apparently can't stand the smell of Vegemite so smearing some on the back of your neck is supposed to repel them.

In my head-universe the dropbear Evolved may or may not like eating Vegemite but they look exactly like the koala Evolved except they have fangs :) but everything else is correct ;D

also in my head-universe the rest of the world has cottoned on that dropbears don't actually exist and so laugh at the warnings but joke's on them they now do exist and hunt exactly like in the urban myths actually don't like Vegemite XD

LoL! Maybe, or maybe fyn is just a bit hopeless with arm muscles ^_^; I've been getting better with exquisite slowness :D

They'll look better in 3d coz I'm better at 3d ^_^;

Very interesting and very creative!
I don’t think I’ve drawn beard before. It sounds hard to draw.

Thank you :)

It's not too hard, just slightly coarser hair that sprouts from the other side of the head XD though I do find it a bit harder to sketch than render x_x

You can do hair really well, bet you'll have no problem with beards :)

(Edited)

Is it just me or have you reached a new level of awesome, the shading/texture looks soo much more...uhhh contextualized? Is that what I want to say? I have no idea how to express it....It all looks like pastels. It's awesome!

And yes, the lizard definitely has an agenda

Also thanks for reminding me that @holoz0r is still here, haven't seen his posts in a while

Aww ^_^ I think it's just you ;D I just used 4b pencil brushes for this one and the last sketchy instead of the mix brushes I usually use, and will probably continue to do so when I want quick and don't want/need the inky/watercoloury feel as they blend nicely and feel a lot faster than the mix brushes.

I'm not sure what you were trying to say ^_^; this colouring method kind of does make the background and the character look like they're in the same scene without overlay gradients (which I used in the last sketch but not in previous ones as in the previous ones I generally just threw a rough background in so that I didn't have characters floating in whitespace). Is that what you were trying to say?

That poor lizard XD
