Monster (2004) | Realistic animation with a complex plot [Review]

The story begins in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1986, where there were still followers of Hitler and the Berlin Wall divided the country in two. The main character is Dr. Kenzou Tenma, a young and extremely talented Japanese neurosurgeon who works in a famous hospital. Despite having strong morals, he is shaken by the corruption within the hospital where he works, and is even more so after discovering in a shameful way that, because of this, he is involuntarily involved in the unjust death of a patient. One day two children are brought in urgently, one of them is a boy with a bullet lodged in his brain, soon after the mayor of the city also arrives in a serious condition. Even against the direction of the hospital, Tenma decides to operate on the child who had arrived first and then resulting in the death of the politician. With this, she loses the support of the hospital director, as well as her position and her fiancée who was only interested in money. Years later, the director of the hospital and the doctors who replaced him are murdered and after these events Tenma ends up becoming the main suspect of the crimes. Tenma decides to go after the killer to clear his name and the mistakes of the past. Without knowing it, he will be involved in a complex plot that encompasses crimes, violence and twists and turns, forcing Tenma to risk her life to stop a real "monster" and correct what may (or may not) have been the biggest mistake she has ever made.

La historia comienza en Dusseldorf, Alemania en 1986, donde todavía había seguidores de Hitler y el Muro de Berlín dividió el país en dos. Como protagonista tenemos al Dr. Kenzou Tenma, un joven y extremadamente talentoso neurocirujano japonés que trabaja en un famoso hospital. However, the protagonists reveal themselves as mentally disturbed people. Without being just weird or cute, often the anime even plays with them, showing what appears to be just a strange or cute character is actually much more than that. In demonstrating the theory that there is a monster inside each of us. The animation, although extremely realistic, especially in the facial expressions of the characters, has that minimal expressionist touch that justifies the series being animated instead of live action. Naoki Urasawa shows the care he took from the stage to even the typical German food. Considering that the story develops slowly, after all, it has a total of 74 episodes, the direction is so fantastically attractive that once you start this anime, you can't stop watching it, even when the plot gives the impression of losing focus and that's when something macabre and unexpected always happens that gathers all the supposedly loose ends, in such a way that it is able to please even the most demanding fans of police dramas; and even if you don't like the genre (or think you don't like it), this is a series that can easily change your mind.

Su animación, aunque extremadamente realista, especialmente en las expresiones faciales de los personajes, tiene ese toque expresionista mínimo que justifica que la serie sea animada en lugar de acción en vivo. The anime contains a wonderful soundtrack, starting with the opening that perfectly shows the mood of the story. The endings already tell a story from a children's book that is not suitable for children. And the songs played during the scenes manage to blend in very well with the plot.

These are characteristics that generally describe well what is considered a classic.
