A few words about the varieties of paper for watercolor painting

avatar

Today I would like to raise a topic that has been planned for a long time and is relevant for artists who paint with watercolors. Let's talk about specialized paper. We will talk about sets of paper, but in the end I will say a few words about the one that I have ever purchased in sheets.

I prepared the publication so that the image was first, and the text related to it was below.

So, the first type is an A4 album of PALAZZO company, Russian production. The cellulose sheets are dense, weighing 480 g / sq. m. with a rough texture. The paper feels like cardboard. Meanwhile, it perfectly absorbs moisture and when working with paint causes a positive impression. As an option, it is suitable for those who paint immediately on a dry sheet using small fills, because with partial soaking, the paper holds the volume well and does not curl.

The next paper is also from PALAZZO. This time it is A3 sheets weighing 250 g / sq. m. Here in the composition of 100% cotton, the sheets have almost no texture, smooth, completely white. The paper does not absorb paint well, leaving most of it on the surface of the sheet, but one of the advantages can be noted that when painting, beautiful soft stains are formed. Perfect for those who like a uniform fill without grains.

Next on the list is CANSON's torshon. Sheets glued together, weighing 300 g/sq. m slightly smaller than the A4 format. The surface of the paper is cellular, the color is slightly yellowish. It is also 100% cotton. At first glance, there are questions about the absorption of paint, but I personally liked the way the strokes lay down. Great for quick drawing.

A3 sheets from the Italian company PORTOFINO are made of 100% cotton. The sheets are smooth in texture and white. At first glance, they are very similar to the cotton paper from PALAZZO, which is described in the second paragraph in this article, but unlike it has a slightly larger weight – 300 g/sq. m. According to my feelings, it is also perfect for smooth large fills or when soft transitions of colors are required, but the papers that absorb their properties are better than those from the same PALAZZO.

I bought HAHNEMUHLE paper a long time ago, but I didn't paint on it that often. These are celluloze sheets that are slightly larger than the A4 format. The paper weight is 275 g / sq. m., the surface is very rough, slightly yellowish in color. What I noticed immediately, after getting completely wet, after drying, the texture almost disappears. I liked the absorbent properties of the paper and what kind of stains are obtained. It is difficult to draw solid fills on it, but it is ideal for wet watercolor techniques.

And here is my favorite paper from FABRIANO! These are 100% cotton sheets of fotmat A3. Weight 300g/sq. m. The structure is cellular, coarse-grained, very rough to the touch, the surface of the sheets is yellowish. In fact, this is my first cotton paper, which I have long been used to and now constantly use in watercolors. The absorbent properties of this material are surprising, as well as the softness and beauty of the stains when you have to paint in a wet technique. The paper is ideal in every case – whether it is painted in separate sections, or when worked on a wetted sheet.

I won't tell you about all the different types of paper that I've come across in large sheets. There were among them both very expensive and extremely cheap. The only thing I can recommend is that you should not paint with watercolors on thin paper (less than 100 g / sq. m.), because it will curl or tear. Also among the cheap paper there are very interesting samples, and if the density of the sheets is sufficient, it is quite suitable for watercolor painting. I hope my article was useful to someone, so I wish everyone good luck in their work!

Interesting article, Yuri. May I point out one more paper: Hahnemühle Expression is an excellent universal paper at a reasonable price. It's 300 gsm, 100% cotton with a matte white surface (cold pressed). For watercolors it absorbs water very well as it is designed to do. The tooth is sufficient to take soft pastels, colored pencil, and graphite pencil well w/o too much texturing. It is strong enough to also withstand expressive brush strokes with gouaches and acrylics. A good paper to have in stock at all times.

Under normal (non-pandemic) circumstances, this paper goes for about 15-20 EUR (20 sheets 30x40). I have noticed the price going up considerably in recent times. I suspect Hahnemühle is passing on the current wood supply shortage in Germany to their customers. (Even though there is no cotton shortage AFAIK :-)

Buying paper for me is more of a quest or some kind of experience, because I have quite decided on my preferences. But somehow I will try to buy a thicker paper, for example, 600-800 g/sq. m. I have never tried to paint on such.

I can understand that. I mentioned the paper more for the benefit of your other followers than for you as an accomplished artist. Of course you like what you like and that's that.

I would like heavier paper, too, but for me as a student that's just too expensive. I can't see wasting money on excellent paper when I can't reasonably guarantee a pleasant result. I still start over too many times when practicing. For example, I have Pastelmat paper on hand, roundabout 4.00 EUR a sheet, but I only use it when my confidence in the outcome is high. 😀
