At least they learned from experience and improved?

Did you get a pro tip about carving bigger to allow for melting and whatnot or was that something you had to learn from experience?

Putting on these projects was quite new for them also so we were all really learning the best practices.

Learning to work with ice is really just trial and error. I picked up a lot when I have to work in + temperatures. Carving roughly and then allowing the ice to resolve itself worked for me so I stuck with it. To be honest I think most sculptors fumble around till they find what works for them.
I have also seen projects when they have been open for a while and you can see that the ones which look rough at the start then look great. Like ugly ducklings turn to beautiful swans.
