What's the Story?

Often I start with just a #figure reference and let my #imagination find a story or situation that they could tell.

What #story do you see in this #painting?

I really love your work. Dare I say, it is comparable to the old masters' stuff.

I've never done oil before myself, assuming that is what you use, because it looks so intimidating and because I'm currently out of work and the price tag on the material is out of my range and so I stuck doing digital on a 7 years old Samsung Galaxy Tab that's prone to freezing.

I do play with charcoal a lot and look to get that painterly feel to it (failing all the time) but I'd really love to start messing with oil as far as traditional medium is concerned.

Cheers @deadsparrow!

Here's the good news. Keep practising with charcoal. Drawing is the foundation of painting. Drawing if done right, will teach you to see and understand values which are the key to the illusion of realism.

Further good news. To paint like the Old Masters you only need a few colours. In fact the fewer the better. If you want to go to the extreme, there's the Zorn palette, which only uses four!

So you can certainly set yourself up with the materials you need to paint in oils. You don't need to purchase everything at once. When I began, I only had a few things and over the years have progressively added to it.

If you're interested in creating in a manner like I do, I offer online tuition.

I like coming up with stories for things, sometimes they're unnecessarily detailed and complicated, and they're also usually completely wrong but it's fun XD

I invented a simple one here, the guy is just chilling on the rock contemplating his life (and hopefully not going to jump unless it's just in for a swim).

Then I read the title you'd given it and...actually I suppose that could still somewhat apply XD

I like the bottom left panel in your process quad, looks like someone carved it as a statue.

I am always curious on how to form up the figure's posture . It seems like I will have to master the anatomy to be able to do that?

I see a story of bravery. Of enduring hardships. Of embracing solitude and take whatever life might give you. A story of a marooned man but not of a marooned spirit.

I see a story of self realization, where a man sitting alone is just realizing what good deeds or bad deeds he has done in his life with a level of frustration in his emotions that means he is not fully happy
