Hi everyone! Sharing with you today a pen & pencil portrait drawing of an old man done on A4 paper & the process that went into it.

Started with a rough sketch highlighting the main areas of the features. I then start working in the detail of the eyes as they are the focal point of the piece.

I then have a completed line drawing of the portrait. To make it more realistic and expressive I will add shading.

Once the shading is complete with the pen by using various cross hatching techniques I will add more subtle tones by using a 3B pencil. It is important to leave highlights where the light catches his face. I then make sure any final details are added.

I was inspired by this image done by photographer LJ. to draw a portrait from. The powerful expression in his face and his sad, expressive eyes seem to have several stories they could tell. Very inspiring image to draw from and wanted to capture this in my drawing.
