That's quite a number of triangles and quads. Are you carving all that or does something like the discombobulator add on help here? (I have it but haven't actually tried it yet)
I'm using the "Tissue" plugin for Blender. It allows me to wrap small mesh components on a larger one and other amazing techniques.
