Showcase Sunday - Firsts

(Edited)

I've been meaning to get back into the Showcase Sundays posts to root out some of my work from the past and share it again. These posts are from my early days of Steem BC (Before Centralisation).

I was inspired by my five year old son for this particular showcase. Due to all the schools being closed we have had to try our hands at home schooling. I must say my wife is great, her being a teacher by profession, all I am good at is passing on some life lessons. Things like how to make a bow and arrow and arts and crafts. He is still at the very early stages and can get quite frustrated when things don't go right. So, I had to resort to showing him my firsts to show him that we always have to start somewhere and it is the not giving up and learning from your mistakes that makes you better.

So in this post I would like to show the posts I made about my first attempts at things. I am so happy looking back now that I always took photos of my work even when it was rubbish. Sometimes they bore the seeds of an idea that would develop into something good and now I can now see and show how I developed.
So without further ado here are my Firsts, click on the image to be brought to the post to read more.

First sand sculpture

This was my first attempt at sand sculpture, I am sure many would have given up at this point. It was a complete disaster as the sand was awful and the whole thing needed to be distroyed and redone by others with more experience in the end. But it did introduce me to Ephemeral sculpture and for that I am forever grateful.

First Snow sculpture

My first attempt at snow sculpture was quite OK actually. What an adventure to travel to the city of Perm in Russia. It was like travelling back in time to Doctor Zhivago land. The wrong tools and clothes made the experience all the more exciting.

First ice sculpture

Ice is another beast entirely, It requires the right tools and skills to make it look half decent, both of which I didn't have on this job. Coupled with that we were fight against bad weather conditions in what was a true baptism of fire and ice.

With all the projects it may seem odd that I continued on in this line of work but luckily with these materials you can work quite fast and very quickly you will see improvements in what you can do. I am so happy I persevered and now I have no fear of taking on whatever project comes my way.

First post to Steem/ Hive

I wanted to throw in this wildcard of my first post to Steem/ Hive. I came here knowing no one and really didn't know what to post about or if people would even be interested in what I had to write. I had never really written anything before except a few short Films and also I have been challenged by a bit of dyslexia. Luckily I was welcomed with open arms and since those early days I have found in me a true passion for writing and have been working my way through every project I have done and documented over 100 Sand sculptures, 20something Ice and snow sculpture and many other things along the way. It has been a great experience for me creatively and I am so glad I have stuck with it.
Now I am up to the year 2009 of documenting and have many, many more to come. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through votes and comments and to be honest I feel like I am only getting started.
Happy Sunday.

Pffft your idea of disastrous firsts and mine are poles apart. POLES. They could not get any further apart if they shot off into different universes in oppposite directions.

I have done similar things with my kids though, and even to this day they get to see/hear me either making "horrendous mistakes" or trying (sometimes forevever) to figure things out. And they do gymnastics so they know that being good at things requires a lot of work XD

I know we must all have some pretty bad firsts for me they are still coming with certain new jobs I try but I don't think we should be embarrassed by them.
My son slowly but surely is getting better at drawing today he drew 4 dinosaurs before breakfast and I could really see them on the page. I think confidence is the main thing he lacks but he is working through that.
I really don't want him to be an artist because he is my pension plan.

I understand a child is a dream on our last day, and now is the right time, for us to be with them, with a little understanding that they can understand.

I also made a mistake, at my first job, and that is true as you said, I would be ashamed of myself if I had to repeat mistakes.

if this is the first job, I see it is extraordinary. I will definitely see your next creation.
