Santa's supply chain (Part 5) - ice sculpture

Any exhibition about Santa's studio obviously needed to have the man himself. I placed him in the next scene along with his trusty reindeer, Rudolph. Santa was packing the sack with presents for delivery on Christmas night as Rudolph pokes his head out from behind a curtain.

I don't have much to say about this part of the process except that I still think it is amazing that he is able to carry so many gifts for all the children of the world. Up to now, the story has been in the realms of believability and I fear that this breaking of the laws of weights and measurements may have some of my readers questioning the whole tale. Fear not, This part is obviously, as we say in the business, Magic, I will leave it at that.

The making of (montage 5)

I had to be smart with my materials when it came to making Santa. He is known to live on a diet of biscuits and glasses of spirits and so is quite portly. I just didn't have enough ice to fill his frame. Kneeled him down and carved him in 2.5D into the block did the trick. Trying to keep him as big as possible inside the block meant I had to remove some of his backside. Luckily this would be facing the wall. His head and arms were added to bulk him out as much as I could.

As with all my photos in this series, the image quality of the piece in the exhibition freezer doesn't do it justice, Luckily I found this one of when I was actually carving him. The form reads better especially with the ice dust from my grinder.

Here is one of Rudolph from the same time. I had to be clever with him due to lack of ice and so decided to just make the head and hope the audience's imagination would fill in the body.

All that was left was a sack and some simple blocks as presents.

It was a simple scene that I thought read well. Sometimes the audience needs a rest visually. If you have too much going on all the time they get tired so, a scene like this is a good interlude.

40 days later

When I returned after my other projects I was happy with how this still looked. All the surface detail was eroded away but the big forms were still present and I present to you that the presents were also still present. I like presents.

Not much more to say about this one so I will sign off and will soon have the next one for you.

Ps

Thanks for reading. I use PeakD to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice, amongst other things. This will hopefully give it a new life on the Hive Blockchain. Below you will find some of my recent posts.

Your sculptures always amaze me. How long does it take you to make them?

Thank you so much. Sorry for the delay, computer troubles kept me offline. Each sculpture in these posts took around two days to make. Overall I spent around two weeks preparing but nearly three weeks making the exhibition due to all the running around.
