Box Nativity - sand sculpture

avatar

I don't really have much to say about this sculpture and have been wracking my brain for the last few days trying to remember if there were any good stories from the project that would create a more interesting post but alas it was pretty uneventful.

The concept for the sculpture wasn't much to write home about either. In theory it sounded pretty interesting: to make the whole thing out of disjointed boxes like a mixed up puzzle.

If you have been following me for a while now you may know that I hate making straight lines and buildings when it comes to sand. If God had wanted us to make straight lines he would have made the Earth flat. Actually, now that I come to think of it...? No. no it isn't. Cope on to yourselves!

Box of tricks

But this sculpture needed me to up my game and as you also know if you have been following me for a while, I like a challenge. So I set myself the mission to not use any rulers or guides and make everything by eye.

I will admit that having the horizon in my view made this that much easier. Like a big water level to plum my lines by.

Of course when you looked close you could see the wobble of my lines but overall and if you stood back you could not see much difference between what I was doing and what the other sculptors achieved with water-levels and rulers.

Shitting a brick

I worked on two characters. This one, which is the Caganer. I spoke of him before. He is the guy in the Catalan crib having a poo. This time I choose to do him as just the important elements broken up onto different Cubes. Of course it got a bit of a laugh from the public even though, as you know, I am a very serious artist.

I also made one of the three kings but strangely I don't have many close photos of him.

This is the best I have, sorry about the Storm Trooper. Again it was just the important elements from his story.

I'll do a more fuller post in the future about all the other elements to the sculpture. With this one I only really wanted to talk about mine, it would be a massive post otherwise and as I'm sure you can tell I like to talk about me.
I did like the overall look of the sculpture and the way the different boxes played with the light. Not one of my favourite years but it was very different yet again.

Ps

Thanks for reading. I use PeakD to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice, amongst other things. This will hopefully give it a new life on the Hive Blockchain. Below you will find some of my recent posts.

The sand can get super hard when it is compacted but they eventually will weather away unlike concrete. I think this one stays up for about 1 month although they can last several years if left untouched.
No, the earth is not flat, it is a doughnut.

Given how many you've done you must have a lot of favourites so it's fine that not every one is your favourite XD (otherwise would you actually have favourites if they were all your favourite? o_O)

You probably didn't have any trouble doing the boxy thing but it's doing my head in thinking about how to carve all that XD

Yes this is one of the grunts of the litter but it is still my baby. As with every one there are elements I like and lessons learned. But overall it doesn;t make me sing.
As with all my sculptures I do a little, stand back then do another little and stand back again. Rinse and repeat till it looks done or till I run out of time.
