Wednesday Walk - The Bugs of Chicago

Here are a few bug finds I've found on my walks in downtown Chicago for #wednesdaywalk by @tattoodjay.

High up in the skyscrapers it is hard to think about all the little critters at ground level.

I suspect a few of these bugs get blown into the city along the shoreline of lake Muchigan.

At ground level there are many flower planters for the butterflies. This is a red admiral.

Here is a great spangled fritillary. When the city plants milkweed in the planters there are quite a variety of butterflies that show up.

Even the monarchs like to hatch out of the flower planters.

It is easy to catch all stages of the monarchs on my walk to work each day.

From crysalis.

To larvae.

Other larvae are often hanging around like this hawk moth worm.

I've never seen a hornworm in this color before. I wonder if the moth has unique textures.

Little jumping spider can also be found near building planters waiting for a fly to come by.

All sorts of bee species can be found. I wonder where this leaf cutter bee is living. Maybe he bore a hole in a building somewhere.

Now for some Chicago orb weavers. These guys are all over the buildings. I think the spiderlings get blown from the prairies into the city. They setup shop wherever they can and catch all sorts of insects.

Surprisingly I have yet to see a roach on my walks through the city. Maybe they are all hiding in the restaurant kitchens with the rats lol. Happy #wednesdaywalk :-)

So many people in the city are oblivious to the natural world that is all around them. I love seeing all the beauty you find there!

These days its amid broken glass windows and graffiti everywhere. But at least nature goes on.

That sounds awful. My son is still working from home, so I haven't heard much about about the destruction. It makes me so sad.

They piped down quite a bit now that the federal agents are being deployed.

Surprisingly buggy. :D Really nice variety for the urban environment. Great post, not only the photographs but also the way in which is presented.

Thanks:-) summer is really buggy downtown, but the brutal winter kills them all off again. Humans can barely survive it.IMG_20180105_180250_740.jpg

Wow! Great post! I can't believe the monarch caterpillar and chrysalis shots. That is so cool:o
Also the way you get the red admiral and the great spangled fritillary to pose for you.

You definitely have a way with bugs!

The trick is I walk to work early in the morning when they are still kind of cold. So they end up sitting still longer for shots.

I think we should call you bug whisperer.

But the shots of the city are top notch as well.
