wednesday walk at St.Petersburg (visual story, 14 foto)

(Edited)

Today started as a cloudy grey day, which turned into a long annoying rain. I managed to harvest some captures anyway, even though by the end I was hiding the camera beneath my leather coat. How could I miss and skip another #WednesdayWalk? No way! I didnt borrow umbrella with me. Instead of that, I was holding my Canon 5D full-frame camera, and 150mm macro lens, which of course is not an ideal solution for streetphoto, but as I stumble upon mushrooms all around a lot, I dont change recently the macro lens to anything else at all.

So, some streetphoto from non-parade St.Petersburg for #WednesdayWalk challenge by @tattoodjay. All pictures taken by me.

What is unusual about this quite usual young Russian lady? She wears no mask...

w40_4572.jpg

The man goes out of the store with a block of cigarets. he might filled up his stock for a week or few. A makeshift seasonal grocery store for watermelons is seen at the background. The most typical feature of the Autumn season here.

A scooter courier of Yandex Food Delivery Service, in his distinctive yellow uniform, having a spare minute. OF COURSE, he spent it with his smartphone and a cigarette.

I like it a lot when leaves arent swept from ther streets and lawns!

w40_5249.jpg

A girl is playing frisby with her father at a playing ground. I noticed her schoolbag at the bench, so probably they were going back home from school, same as we. And this little physical activity is a best way to relax from studies, before venturing into doing of a homework.

w40_5230.jpg

Intresting scene that left unexplained to me. I wish I had time to come up and ask what that boy was carrying. There might be some intresting story befind those tools, definitely not a simple toy sword! Something bizarre and unique. Unfortunately I was in a rush and took the pic across the road, had no time for building any communication at all..

w40_5181.jpg

The conductor in the tram. She had a very sad, weared out look; after 10 minutes of eye contact, I broke down and took a picture of her. Despite the very poor lighting, to my surprise, the shot came out well.

w40_5184.jpg

An unusual scooter driver.

wed40_5247.jpg

Lady under rain assumably going to somebody's birthday party, with these balls and a boxed present.

w40_5250w.jpg

This one is my trophey for the cool #AlphabetHunt challenge I am taking part in. Current week has the letter 'V', so I am looking after intresting stuff starting from letter V. This is what I've got today. Not sure yet if it will go to the final post or not -- thats always a last-minute decisions.

And the last one, truly a highlight of the day for me.

w40_5252.jpg

I captured this in my own yard, when I almost came home. I even had to unholster my camera back from the rucksack, as the scene I witnessed was shiny brilliant! This man is collecting the rain water, to use it further for hands-washing! "The economy must be economical!" (с)

f--g brilliant, isnt it? Ok, that was the last one.
Thanks for walking with mee, see you next time.
Надеюсь, вам было приятно прогуляться со мной по улицам Петербурга!

TNKS, great you enjoy my trophis. 99% of these are one-takes made blindly, without any long aiming and composing the frame, but damn! I am proud of the results very much. a living bouquet of citylife, indeed. cheers, and a !BEER for you.

yes, i am in the same boat - always feel shy and speak with my own voices in the head instead of shamelessly click the trigger! :P

Wow @qwerrie, I love how you get shots of people going about their daily lives, but yet even though they're not doing much, you manage to make them shine and be so unique.

I'm trying to decide which is my favourite one, but it's too hard to decide they are all so good!

Isn't it funny, your Wednesday walks are full of people and mine are landscapes and I actually wait for the people to get out of my shot before I take it!!!

Mind you, it's so cold here again at the moment and we're still on lockdown for another few weeks, so I am taking advantage of being able to get my shots without people because very soon, lockdown is going to be over, its going to be really hot and there will be people everywhere, so i will never be able to get my 'clean' shots again- atleast not like it is now....

Great walk and thanks so much for sharing!
I look for ward to your walk next Wednesday. 😃

I totally see your position, and what can I say? on one hand it is correct on other wrong... well, maybe wrong is not a proper word to use here.

it all depends! thats it. the general thing is, that folks in a frame makes it better. their appearance momentarily develops / provides a new dimension to your photo. Imagine: you took a photo of an old half-rotten apple shed. well, its just a shed! nothing too much intrested. but suddenly, an old man with a pipe.. or shovell... came in, and you take the same picture but theres a folk's figure in the frame - blurry, not in a focus, but still. you made a shed's portrait in environment, in a context of human living, human environment.

same example with urban cityscapes... you may take a photo of a nice door / doorway, but it will be not so much intresting, too plain, too less-dimentional and senseless (except of showing Just A Nice Door - and nothing more!) adding a human figure or a few - somewhere in a corner, at a background - rushing away to the frame boundaries - changes everything, changes your impression of a photo, benefits to it a lot.

you should try it! you may take a double shots ('clean' ones, and mor eor less ruined with small crowds in a frame ). well, this aforesaid is mainly implied to a streetphoto jenre, ofc. Any folks figures, wires, cars and other 'unwanted extras' will not benefit for the same 'nice door' image, for example, if you take a photo for an art catalogue, and such. so, talking about landscapes... landscapes with and without people, are different things, and each is good jenre, and in its own right!

ufff. thats it. sorry if I am too verbose this time.

THX a lot for your feedback, you are very welcome next Wednesday to my blog... and anytme at all, sure thing. I like to post my fave picture of the day (the best part of today's captures' to Picture A Day community... let me recommend it to you, too:
https://peakd.com/c/hive-127238

I like to preserve time. Those maybe not great captures if you look at any of them, but when they go together, they sum up some zeitgeist, they turn into a reportage of everyday life of the city - and became much more valuable like this bouquet. thats my attitude to it, and why I love the #wednesdaywalk so much. its not about the architecture and beautiful cityscapes and places of intrest at all.

:P

oh, and a little extra reward for you: !ENGAGE 20

No you are absolutely right, there's nothing wrong with what either of us do- we each see the world- the images in a different way.

We each see beauty in what we see. I would see the beauty in the shed alone, but then I can also see another dimension of beauty when the man comes into the shed.

I have tens of thousands of photos with humans in them, so it's nice to be able to get a shot of the same places and see the core layer of the beauty in the scene itself without any human distractions, aswell as seeing features in the street, in the architecture, whatever it may be, that you wouldn't normally see when a crowd of people is covering it up.

I'm also loving seeing the implied mystery and intrigue and a 'blank canvas' to and see that's the thing- I love architecture and the immense diversity of it.

Architecture tells a story of ages, cultures, trends, socio-ecomic backgrounds, the history of the place and the changes that have happened not only through out the area a whole, but also the buildings themselves and the people that have been through them and in the areas.

So isn't it great that we each see beauty in what we see and that's what makes us good photographers- our ability to capture what we percieve as beauty and all of unique perspectives of beauty- after all, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder....

And soon, we are going to be out of lockdown, physical changes are being made right now to these streetscapes (as I've been witnessing the last few days walking around) and humans by the literal tens of thousands are going to be flocking to the streets again, so this is a rare opportunity to capture my home like this.

I do love the unswept leaves, unclean is cool sometimes 😀

Every man should think like him and a country will progress in no time.

Loved to take a walk to the streets of Russia with you @qwerrie 😊

I just have a small question and asking frankly to you as a friend , You have tasken so many public photos of so many people in this post. Do they cooperate when you take the shots? I'm asking because this is another contest I'm looking forward to participate in the future.

Do they cooperate when you take the shots?

ha! thats a key question, actually... the answer is NO.
they do not cooperate. I can talk more and more about this situation, but 1st, why you ask?.. the #wednesdaywalk challenge is very cool, ofc do join without any doubts. but you are not obliged necessarily to take photos of people around you, to fit your post to the challenge - am I right, @tattoodjay? you may take pictures of anything you see, when you are out, anything intresting that attracts you / attracted you in the certain 10, 15, 30 minutes of walk, be it architecture, sunset, or flowers.

personally I prefer streetphoto, and folks are the key element of streetphoto. and Russian folks - lets face it strait - isnt a great option for doing streetphoto. most of them are strictly suspicions (instead of being cooperative!) the most often one can hear a question 'why do you take a picture of me, on what purpose? dont do that, I dont want to! especially if you gonna put it on the web'. so, I just dont ask them, and most of the time, I try to take pics staying unnoticed. (unstaged pics also turn out better - for an obvious reason, if you ask if you may shoot, and get a permission, the person stops doing what he / she was doing, and will start posing - which momentarily turn your streetphoto of city / street life into a stage photo of posing model... most probably). so, best option is to make a momentary capture when you suddenly see something intresting, in one take, max 2 takes... and using a telephoto lens (like, 200, 300mm) is very helpful in such situation. Recently, I walk out with 150mm lens, which isnt ideal, but if i do fast shots more or less I stay unnoticed. At least if I do not aim for long, and restrict myself to one take, instead of 2-3 takes.

ps. Even a smartphone can be used for streetphoto. You may take pictures in the city staying unnoticed with smartphone - depending on what you will shoot. Folks at the shops, kidz at the playground, folks coming after watching movies - they are very into their own inner thoughts, focused on some certain things, and less tend to give their attention to the outside things (i.e. you!), which is helpful too.

Thats it. Hope my thoughts were of an intrest to you.

I asked out of curiosity to be honest :D

I'm so much grateful @qwerrie for your kind explanation. This has cleared a lot of my doubts regarding street photography and I will definitely take some tips mentioned in it.

Yes, with a smartphone this is also possible and I think I'm going to participate in this coming Wednesday walk for the very first time. I was a little doubtful at first but your words have boosted me literally :))

Thank you once again!
