Hiking Around The Lake Guadalest

How much time has passed since my last #WednesdayWalk? I scrolled down a bit on my blog and found out that it was two months ago.
I was already missing the writing on a topic other than music. Maybe some mushroom or succulent related topic found its place to reach out, however, the truth is that not many great and long walks happened either. I’ve been spending a lot more time behind the screen lately, and I’m mostly based only on music themes and posts. Also, the end of the school year is approaching, so the activities around the lessons have intensified a lot. On top of all that, I have to study for a concert that will take place in two weeks and go to rehearsals.

We needed to get out. Not just somewhere to walk around our town, but to go out all day. Somewhere we love to spend the day in the fresh air. So on Saturday evening we decided and promised ourselves to go to the mountains the next day, a place we usually go to disconnect from the stress and work.

IMG_20210602_103524.jpg

The place is about half an hour's drive away and the biggest gem that adorns it is the artificial lake. My husband and son brought fishing rods, and I decided to do a tour around the lake.

IMG_20210602_103109.jpg

Three villages surround this lake. More precisely, the lake is in the valley, and the villages are on the hills and mountains. Beniarda, Benimantell and Guadalest. Actually, one of those, Guadalest already came to this community a few months ago.

IMG_20210602_103606.jpg

I made the yellow marked route, which is 9 km long. As we can see from this board, it is strictly forbidden to light a fire, because forest fires are very frequent and spread quickly. Vegetation is dry and conifers burn fast. Also, there is always wind to help spread the fire, and extinguishing is difficult due to the terrain. Only helicopters and hydroplanes can approach.

IMG_20210530_145059.jpg

IMG_20210530_104141.jpg

On these roads, you can walk or ride a bike, and if you are lucky you can even see some wild animals, such as a fox or a wild boar. My husband once went fishing alone and stayed up all night and he met some foxes. Nice encounter, but I prefer to meet cats on my walks. Or dogs, like that one that came to us. He was tame, but we didn't see who would be the owner. Later he went away, I hope it found his family.

IMG_20210602_102931.jpg

So I left my boys and the guest dog, they were fishing and I went for my walk. The terrain is like this, small paths between the pine trees. Sometimes the path goes up, or down and if you don't have a bottle of water and it is summer, well, then you are in a trouble :) I did have water with me this time, but as it was sunny and I didn't apply sunscreen, I got sunburnt.

IMG_20210602_103139.jpg

As I walked through the woods there was shade, that was good. But sometimes the road goes along the shore of the lake and there was more sun there. An additional factor was the time of my walk, it was noon, just when the sun was strongest. But for this view, everything pays off, the sun and the wind were no longer important to me. My favourite colours, blue and turquoise. Sorry for the mention @kohsamui99 , but a few days ago you asked about where my walks are... Here comes one, enjoy :)

The view of my loved colour was enjoyable, but I did not look just for that big picture. I saw some small details too while I was listening to the sound of birds and breathing the fresh air. A lot of small flowers, by the side of the path. I saw those purple flowers that have crumpled petals, Cistus x purpureus, or at least a similar plant. I am not sure if it is the same or not. In one of the flowers, where was a hungry guest :)

A grasshopper tried to escape from my view:

When I crossed the dam and walked to the other side of the lake, the path was no longer narrow and just pedestrian. There was an asphalt road. This is because it connects nearby villages with orchards and gardens, where people have olives and almonds. Due to landslides, the wall of the hill was concreted in some parts of the road. Some artists used it as a canvas for their graffiti, which you can see in the following photos.

Yes, we love to go there, as it is different air, different feeling to spend a day and certainly beautiful area. We used to go more often, but lately we somehow just couldn't find a free day! Oh yes, those graffiti were a surprise, nice idea to use a grey, boring concrete wall :D

Thanks, I am happy we can have a concert, finally!

You are welcome, and thank you for the initiative :)

Wow what a beautiful blue / turquoise color this lake has. I think you could really enjoy this beautiful landscape and it is probably a good distraction from learning.

Amazing colour of that lake, indeed. We fell in love with it from the first time we saw it some 9-10 years ago :D
The water is cold, as small, cold streams from the mountains flow into the lake.

The coastal towns get the water supply form it (Mediterranean coast), and during summers there is less water unfortunately, but depends on year... if during the winter and spring there was enough rain, it is good and we can enjoy in always blue/turquoise colour :)

What a beautiful shot and breathtaking landscape! The weather looks lovely and there's no crowd in sight 😀(that's the best part to me). So lucky that you get to live nearby this place.

Hehehe, yes, in photo nobody :p But as it was Sunday, a lot of people went hiking too... So that poor dog that came to us was maybe lost, we don't know. He wanted to be with someone, but we didn't see anyone looking for him.

We are lucky, indeed, as actually living in a coastal Mediterranean town, but in half an hour fresh mountains air is waiting for us :) (only problem lately is time, so we needed to schedule a free day for ourselves 😅 )

hahaha I see! You live in a beautiful place for sure. I always wonder what is the typical meal there, let's say for breakfast? whenever I read Mediterranean, I always associate it with hearty but healthy meal like olives and various fresh fresh seafood; Oh yeah and also the ancient beautiful buildings.

Oh, the typical Spanish breakfast is one cup of coffee! Nothing else. Than later, around 11:00 one or two slices of toast with tomatoes and olive oil. Late lunch. Late dinner. Beer and snacks. Actually nothing healthy 🤣 But we don't follow this schedule and diet, except my morning coffee what is a must :)
Variety of fresh seafood, that is good indeed, our favourite are shrimps and mussels with garlic, parsley and lemon. Also, due to the climate there are lot of orange trees, almonds and olives.

hahahaha that's interesting! I once tried that toast with olive oil and tomatoes, it tasted really good. Mussels and Shrimps, ah It's been a while since I cooked them. Anyway, thank you for answering my curiosity! have a great day!

Ah such beautiful pictures @mipiano.
You know, in all the times we visited I didn't realize that the lake was accessible🤦‍♀️ we used to go to the little ancient town at the top of the mountain and admire the views down below.
Amazing post and what a fantastic Wednesday walk querida hermana 😚🤗💚💙

Hey my dear @holisticmom
The first time we went also just to the historic old village of Guadalest, and admired the lake from there. But once we found out that it is accessible (from Beniarda there is a small road leading to the lake and the other way is to park down at the dam from the part of Guadalest)

One day if you come, we should visit it together 🙃
