Hello friends of terror and mystery, today I want to share with you a book of horror stories that a friend gave me several years ago, which is pretty interesting, because it is made with the purpose of being used in groups of children over 9 years old, to experience a moment of terror.

This book is entitled Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, stories collected from folklore and retold by author Alvin Schawartz, and illustrated by Stephen Gammell. It was published in 1981 in the United States by J.B. Lippincott Publishers.

Although I have not used this book to read stories to children, because it is not in my mother tongue, I find it very interesting how each story seeks to create an atmosphere of suspense. Who reads must have read the stories previously, because it indicates guidelines or instructions, either to modulate the voice, whisper, scream, or even jump on one of the listeners at the end of the story to scare them all.

I can imagine the classic location ideal for narrating these tales of terror, around a campfire in the dark and silence of the night. This book also comes with songs, making it perfect for a recreational night of terror.

One thing I love about "Scary stories to tell in the Dark" is the illustrations, the black and white pencil drawings are pretty attractive and grotesque. Stephen Gammell did an excellent work of illustration.

The stories told in this book date from 1911 to the time of its publication, so it is also an important record of American popular culture.

Here is a transcription of one of the stories told by Alvin Schwarzt.

What do you come for?

There was an old woman, who a lived all by herself, and she was very lonely. Sit ting in the kitchen one night, she said "Oh, i wish i had some company".
No sooner had she spoken than down the chimney tumbled, two feet from which the flesh had rotted. The old woman's eyes bulged with terror.

Then two legs dropped two the hearth and attached themselves to the feet Then a body tumbled down, then two arms, and a man's head.

As the old woman watched, the parts came together into great gangling man the man danced around and around the room . Faster and faster he went . Then he stopped and he looked into her eyes,

"what do you come for?" she asked in a small voice that shivered and shook.
"What do i come for?" he said.

"I come - for YOUUUUU" (As you shout the last words, stamp your foot, and jump at someone nearby).
