The Downvote Scare

avatar

So I just reading some posts, commenting, and upvoting. And all of sudden, I mistakenly clicked on the downvote button for one of the recent posts by @onealpha where apparently I wrote a nice comment just a few minutes ago.

image.png

My Reaction

As soon as I saw the pop-up asking me to confirm my downvote, I got so scared that I just backed off my hands from the laptop and sat still thinking what have I done. It took me 1-2 minutes to realize that I haven't done anything wrong, it's just a confirmation window and I have not yet downvoted the content.

OMG! It was an unacceptable feeling altogether. It felt like I've done a blunder. Over the past few days, we have been reading so much about this downvoting thing, how it is negatively impacting the platform, rules governing downvoting, some people agreeing, others disagreeing. I think all of that took a toll on me. It suddenly gave me a feeling that I will be thrown out of the platform, haha.

How would have I undone my action

But I know, even if I would have done this by mistake, I would write an apology to the owner of the post and they would understand that it was a genuine mistake.

Comparing to other Social Media

We have seen on the social media platforms like Facebook that the dislike button is next to the like button or it's the same icon (like in Instagram). But given platforms like hive and proof of brain are completely different and a downvote here means taking away the rewards of the owner, we should make some changes here.

My Suggestion

So I just want to make a small proposal here. Instead of having the downvote button just next to the upvote button, we should have it separately at a place on the screen where there are no other buttons so that one doesn't end up accidentally downvoting a post. This way someone would reach out to the button when they really intend to do so. @leprechaun please see if this is possible in the next upcoming release of the blue brain.

Mockup

I am a business analyst by profession and I work on enhancing the user experience for my product. I think this change will be a good experience for the users and would avoid unnecessary downvotes.

Hoping this helps the community as a whole. Have a good day!

I already experienced this situation but thank god we have confirmation window 👍 and I agree to your proposal. Downvote button should be away from the Upvote button. It's a common mistake and this will sure enhance user experience. Hope the POB developers consider this.

I'm curious, what do you think the main fear is that's causing the anxiety there? Do you think you'd have the same reaction if you almost downvoted someone with a 500 POB stake?

Interesting thought process to think about I'd say. Good suggestion too by the way, I'm looking forward to front-end design changes.

I would have absolutely felt the same scare if I would have downvoted someone with NO POB staked. Actually, if I think through, my downvote wouldn't matter a dime to onealpha. He is a whale and I'm far far away from where he is right now.

When I write a post, I put in a lot of effort, time, and thoughts. I try to make every post my best post ever. But if someones don't like it or doesn't agree with me and they happen to downvote me, I would not like it for sure. The problem is people using downvotes to take revenge where this feature has been made available in the interest of people, to prevent plagiarism and spreading of negativity on the platform.

So hitting the downvote button for a whale or for a new bee, doesn't matter. What matters is downvoting the wrong content.

It's something we all have to learn. DVs are an important means of expression. Like upvotes, however, they just have to be used well. "Used well" is a subjective characteristic we're trying to work out for the community.

The DV button can be moved, or can be left where it is. Both are fine with me.
If something was done wrong (opposite) by mistake, not a tragedy either. You can always change or remove your vote or DV, before the post expires after 7 days.

.. a downvote here means taking away the rewards of the owner...

Owner? This is wrong to say by its core, by design.
Rewards are NOT yet owned by anyone, until the post expires.

I do not say it this way.
I say DV can remove the potential, allocated rewards, which are not yet owned by post author.
DV is just a consensus mechanism action, making correction to abnormally allocated rewards by a biased, corrupted, irresponsible voters, which in many cases can also be a part of a circle-jerking, paid voting.

How much chances you, or any other new POB member has to collect a 250-390 POB on even the super good, informative, high value post? The amount which POB old timers, POB whales or their selected favorites do almost any time, on the total garbage posting? Research the trending tab, research the past (expired) posts of them. See by yourself.
Even short comments sometimes collects more POB (30, 40, 50 and more), than your best of the best works.
YES, sometimes I do a generous upvotes on a short comment too. Why not, if founders do that every day, this can be understood as an encouraged thing.
Don't like that? Downvote ! You still have that RIGHT. DV's are not banned yet.
DV, and leave a comment - "I disagree with the rewards"
That is all what you have to do.

👍

In my past 2 months experience on POB, I didn't came across a good post getting downvotes. Also we don't have reputation score on POB. I still don't get why there is so much fuss regarding downvotes. Downvote should be considered only a preventive measure against fraud, plagiarism, abuse, scam and other illegal activities. I may be too young to say this but I think only mischievous person should afraid of downvoting. Also if someone individual is using downvotes for personal vendetta or in unethical aspects the community should together prevent such measures. There can be many solutions if we all think together and work as a community. No one here is against POB tribe and we all have its best interest. I am too optimistic and credulous. I believe in people here and hope we can just move ahead in peace. Success of POB is everyone's success. ✌️😊🙏

I agree. Downvoting has been made a huge agenda now and that's why it actually scared me. It should be considered as a normal reaction or opinion to the post. But if we promote that, it's going to attract revenge votes which is something that will not benefit anyone out here.

I'm sure we get to a solution soon where in we are able to differentiate between genuine and fake downvotes (even upvotes for that matter).

Definitely I really get your point of view very clearly now as some users in future might later turn it or start using it as a means of intimidating other user's or some might see it as a way of scrapping off rewards from a content or comment just because they are not of the opinion of what the author is saying or what the content Carries.

To actually avoid all this scenario from occuring in future,so that we won't have to see different scene of users downvoting each other for enemity sake, something should be done about it.

Never have I ever seen this for myself, you are correct. And I don't think I have never given a great post in the number of years I have spent here.

See by yourself.

I do feel the same sometimes although can't do much about it.

DV, and leave a comment - "I disagree with the rewards"

I, honestly, would not want to do that because it could be that other people see a post as a potential one even when I don't.

Downvote should be used properly, for the purpose it has been created for.

Actually I see reasons in your proposal too as many might make that kind of mistakes too unknowingly ,but at the other end I want to believe the confirmation window is their to be of help before you finally proceed to the last stage of confirming the process.

On a good note,if it can be moved to somewhere else just like you proposed also, is a very good idea in which am in support of too,but I also believed that if that happens by mistake too at times, which one way or the other I am not really sure such should happen cause you have one step to go through before the final confirmation and if it happens you can still un-downvote such content after noticing it.

Yes I know we can revoke our action but it might happen that one doesn’t even realise that they have downvoted a post.

Honestly it is very easy to make the mistake and that is the reason i want to suggest it should be far from each other.

I found another frightening button, which is the flag at the top of the post, and the truth is I don't know what it does, and of course I don't dare to press it.

I have really been thinking about this. I want to suggest that probably if one is at the right and the other one for down voting should be at the left hand side due to the fact that it is very easy to click on the down voting button due to the closeness of the button to the upvote as well.

Try this : www.proofofbrain.blog. There is no downvote button at all.

There should be a pull-down menu where you can choose for downvote for copy of someone else's work, downvote for spam, downvote for pornography with out the nsfw tag. Underneath we only have votes that can be negative, and comments. The rest either are not tracked in a way that lets you easily look them up, or they are not free, or they have to do with transferring or managing currencies.

Amazing job @leprechaun. This looks super cool and solves the problem altogether. It's good that you are already considering all these user experience-related things while working on the new version.

Since I am a business analyst and I do work on applications from a functional side, do let me know if I can be of any help to you.

Is there a service problem? I wasn't able to access the blog in the last couple of minutes. I'll try again though.

Great work @leprechaun 👍 This is exciting feature for sure. Thank you so much. Just curious, when it is coming on main frontend, any updates? We all are excited. It will be sensational. Kudos to your hard work 👏🙏

No plans for it to come to proofofbrain.io. The intent was to have the new front end replace proofofbrain.io.

I wouldn't call it a DV scare. DV's aren't scary unless it's applied without clarification continuously. That's when you need to worry. I've accidentally DV'd someone in the past. More than once actually. I've caught them in review of my actions and was able to reverse them. I wouldn't worry about it. Mistakes happen.
