Focus: One Thing At A Time

In everything I do, I am always time conscious. I like to multi-task because I believe I can achieve so many things at the same time and still have some time left for other things.

Few days back, I was in my kitchen multitasking as usual. Stirring a pot of stew on the stove, checking the electric kettle whether the water was boiled, cleaning the sitting room while on my phone! Can you believe that? Well, that's how I work most times. I have heard that women are better at multitasking than men. I think it's true in my case.

While staring at my phone and dropping a comment on a post, I opened the hot pot of stew forgetting that it was hot! I should have used a napkin instead. The pain that struck my hand went straight to my head that I almost dropped my phone! LOL! I paused, calmed down, and wondered why I was multi-tasking early in the day. It got me thinking: ONE THING AT A TIME!

In the words of Swami Vivekananda,

Take up one idea, make that one idea your life. Think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.

We pursue success daily and in our pursuit, some people combine so many things, hoping success would be the outcome. According to dictionary.com, success is the accomplishment of one's goals. Goals are things we desire to achieve or pursue. When we achieve them, it's a success.

We could pursue a goal or several goals at a time. However, to succeed, we need focus. Focus is when we give our full attention to a goal; it is concentration. How do we concentrate on our goals? By taking them one by one. We could write down our goals on a notepad, attend to them and tick them off one by one.

Alexander Graham Bell aptly put it this way -

Concentrate all thoughts upon the work in hand. The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus.

As much as we want success, FOCUS is key. When you have goals or projects or even ideas, take them one at a time. This will allow you to give it your full concentration. You will be able to see the idea fully, allow it to take shape in your mind, fantasize about how to make it a reality, write down the workable steps you may take to achieve it, then start working on it.

When we jumble so many things together or pursue some goals at almost the same time, we may not get optimal results or at best, an average result. If care is not taken, we may end up empty-handed.

To take on more than one idea at once may lead to confusion and unfinished projects. It's best to start a project with the determination to see it to the end. Count the cost before you begin so you are not burdened with unfinished projects.

To Maintain Focus

  • Write down your goals
  • Reflect on how you can make it a reality
  • Carry out a survey to know the cost
  • Talk with experts and consultants in the relevant field
  • Proceed with your goal, if it appears feasible.
  • Stay positive!

One Thing At A Time? I always tell myself to take things one step at a time and l can attest to the fact that it's not as easy as it sounds.

Trust me, just like how you were very busy while trying to get things done so early in the day, many of us also subconsciously tackle things as if there is no tomorrow 😬

The thing l learned from this post is that no matter what we want to achieve, it's always better to follow things up one step at a time.

Well said. Take your activities and goals one at a time. Also, don't over work yourself with subconscious activities. 😒

Wow!
Such an insightful post. I had a great time reading.

It really reflects how we humans like to do a lot of things at the same time without outing our full energy in one place. I myself am a victim of that and I think I’ll have to apply your rules and see where things goes.

Thanks for bringing this here ,do have a great day ahead today😊
