To Write, Well

Once upon a time, there was a dude who liked to drive around in his car. His car was red and the back left tyre was deflated. It was a dull day and the dude was late to pick up...

Alright. I'll save you from the suffering.

It's not hard to create the setting for a story but to do it in the poetic and fluid nature of our world's greatest writers requires practice and years of experience. The ability to transport the reader across galaxies with words and to immerse them in the concoctions of the writer's imagination is a mastery that many desire.

As you can see, my writing needs some work. It's been a long time since I was last in an English class and even then I wasn't exactly a model student.

I can't expect to get better from just writing every day without making any efforts to improve what I'm putting out into the ether.

Minor improvements without any serious effort are expected but I think the focus on certain areas will help to hone my skills and make reading more enjoyable for anyone dropping by.

I've already been making some changes to the typical bland words that are always overused in the English language. Words such as 'and', 'but', 'very', and 'I'. There are countless resources on the internet so there isn't really any excuse.

The formation of my sentences can feel off at times when I start to make changes with my limited understanding of English grammar, but I'm hoping that consistency and the occasional research session will help. More specifically, punctuation and sentence structure.

Reading on a regular basis is bound to help although this is going to depend on what I am reading. Books or writings by published and revered authors seem like the best option.

Enriching my vocabulary is also another focus that I'd like to address. The issue with this is that I don't want to come across as some pretentious bellend who constantly uses words that I don't typically use in my everyday life or feel comfortable with.

Nevertheless, it's definitely worth the effort to make some gradual changes. It's about time I started using the big boy's dictionary.

i Believe with time you’ll become the perfect writer you wish to be.

I think I’ll start reading new books too as I am not in any case a good writer.

Good luck in your quest to be better 👍👍👍

That's it, just time and practice. Reading is definitely up there as one of the better ways to improve writing so I'm sure it'll help you out.

Thanks for the comment buddy.

I like this approach. Loved that bit about coming across as pretentious. Gave me a deep laugh down to my bellend.

I really didn't need to Google bellend today (luckily I wasn't on images) but thanks for teaching me a new word. ;)

Phew, that could have been alarming. You are welcome, it's a classic word that's been in my vocabulary since the days of my unruly adolescence lol.

Looking forward to see how this develops!
English is not my first language, therefore it is a struggle to get a good message across. I try my best to use phrasal verbs, idioms and the right connectors to create a flow in my writing, mixes with some quotes/references, if you know what I mean... wink-wink.
I was always more of a talker than a writer, so to post here is always a challenge. Going to follow you to get inspired.
And one last thing: When i want to really go nuts, I always look for words in a Thesaurus, particularly this one
I appreciated this parcel truthfully, I commend you for your marvelous endeavor! hahaha
Stay safe and post away!!!

I just checked out your latest post and I have to say that your English is pretty good considering it isn't your first language. I understand what you mean when you mention the struggle of getting a good message across though.

Thanks for dropping by @fireguardian, keep up with the posts! I'll be watching out for your next one

You can use the passive voice for expressions where the subject is less important. For example: "The supper needs to be cooked." or "this comment was voted up"

Hopefully, I don't need to use the passive voice as often as I can foresee. My life isn't that exciting so I can easily see "The breakfast was just the usual." slipping into one of my posts.

Some people seem to see me as a pretensions bell end - but they're not very bright, either - so that suits me fine.

Never dumb down to satisfy the idiots..there's too many of them already, and by dumbing down, you join their ranks - and add to their numbers!

Valid point! I think what I meant to get across was that I'd rather introduce newer sophisticated words to my vocabulary gradually so that they're actually used in my day-to-day life rather than just in forms of writing. I guess it starts with the writing and can lead into conversations I may have.

Thanks for writing about writing; I've been blogging for 10+ years, and have found it immensely satisfying. The more I write and revisit what I write, the better I get. Best wishes on your journey.

No problem at all, it was the thing that sprung to mind yesterday lol. It's good to hear that about your writing over the years, I'll make sure to revisit from time to time to see my own progress. How long have you been on the HIVE blockchain @takeonrules?

I've been on HIVE for a little over a month (I think).
