Callaloo is veggie much like spinach. It’s very popular in Jamaica as a healthy, tasty and filling source of vitamins and minerals.

So I recently I got some sent to me from Jamaica in cans. This is the first time I actually tried Callaloo like this and obviously it just isn’t as good as the fresh plant. If I were living in Jamaica I’d laugh if someone told me they have callaloo in a can. In Jamaica the plant grows so easily.

Above is what a callaloo dish would look like in Jamaica. Boiled dumplings, green bananas or food from the earth such as yam and potatoes.

The Callaloo can I tested, my wife made a Callaloo, tuna and cream pasta. The only thing I didn’t like about the meal was you couldn’t tell it was callaloo by the looks of it. The canned callaloo also has a pale green look compared to the fresh plant. The pasta was tasty though. I also made a callaloo toast sandwich for breakfast.

If you can’t get fresh Callaloo this will do. It’s best to season up the callaloo like Jamaicans usually do but it being in the can, I think it needs even more sprucing up. Enjoy your Sunday .... Monday ?

In the USA, sometimes Chinese shops will have an African/Caribbean section for immigrants, and I've seen canned callaloo a few times. I've never bought it nor know anyone who's eaten it, but I shy away from any canned vegetables that aren't Indian style pickles I didn't make myself.

The equivalent of this where I'm from is "instant grits" for breakfast. No self-respecting southerner or midwesterner would be caught dead cooking instant grits.

Are you in Japan? Is that why you can't get fresh callaloo? If so, you may have access to amaranth leaves, something we ate a lot in Cambodia and now here in Suriname too. It's about the closest thing to callaloo.

The only reason I tried it was because some customers here requested it. Yeah, I am in Japan.
I have a small biz Jamaican goods web shop here. Interestingly callaloo grows here, just have to wait a bit till spring. Then I will have the fresh ones to eat & sell:). I really do not recommend this canned callaloo though lol

Wow, surprised it grows there in such a different climate. No shame, we're here in Suriname missing eating fresh mushrooms everyday, something we took for granted in Cambodia. We tried to cook with some canned mushrooms the other day, and needless to say, not trying that again. The Caribbean needs to step up the mushroom game.

Is true, mos aren't big on mushrooms in the Caribbean. Just takes one Rasta to start sing bout him mushroom soap and mushroom stew and the ting tek off. Mushroom are big in Japan, they have these special ones that go for 100s of $. Yeah I was surprised Callaloo could grow here too.

Everything has its pros and cons. It looks good, I wouldn't leave it on the plate ha ha

But even though canning can last for years, besides adding a lot of chemicals to the body, it takes away from the flavor. Something similar happened to me with some pimples that are eaten a lot in Venezuela, "las caraotas". They are black pimples, very rich in protein. But in Bogotá they were found in cans. Luckily, that has changed, you can now find them unprocessed and prepare them yourself.

It's the best.

It's very good that coocast at the end of the post, your personal information. Helps people get to know you a little better.

Canned veggies should be illegal..joke. I just couldn't imagine how this veggie can be bought in a can, seems so strange. ok " las caraotas" I think Brazilians use these beens a lot too. Very tasty. Glad you can get the fresh ones, and I can think canned beans don't taste as bad as canned leaves.

Yeah something I did before but got out of the habit of doing. I will tweek until I find a variation I am comfortable with.

That canned leaves thing really is a very strange thing ha ha
I'm sure if you walk you'll find them, most likely. I hope you run with luck.

Interesting. Nothing is as good from a can. I can always tell the difference, even when I didn’t see it originally prepared.

I love callaloo but would definitely prefer fresh. But, you know me, I’ll eat anything then when hungry

Respect
