Chapter 14

Cloudia and her party returned safely to the capital after successfully completing their mission and tying all lose ends.

The very first thing that Cloudia did after returning was to visit her younger brother in the boy's dormitory to check on him. Seeing Tiana there, Cloudia had little scuffled with the dark elf for putting her little brother in danger by not protecting him properly.

Of course, Raine quickly came between them, preventing the event into becoming something big. After all it's not really Tiana's fault that they were caught by the trap laid by the members of the Dark Church. Not to mention it was on his insistence that they even visited the Blacksmith Guild in the first place.

After diffusing the situation, Raine asked his big sister about their mission and what souvenir she had for him in an attempt to change the subject to something else.

Although still feeling dissatisfied, Cloudia chooses to play along with her little brother and told him everything that happened excluding their raids of the Dark Church's hideouts in the regions which gave their group the title of the "Six Devils."

Cloudia did not really like the title and felt like that the people who gave them that horrible title were being unfair. As such, she decided not to tell her little brother about it. Although with Raine's intellect it's probably useless to hide the fact that it's her and her teammates who destroyed those bases.

Raine was fascinated by the encounter of his sister and her friends. For him, taking missions and subjugating monsters was a really exciting prospect. It's very similar to the JRPG games he used to play when he was just a child back on his previous world.

The siblings talked to each other animatedly while Tiana simply listened to them not too far away. Although she was annoyed that Cloudia blamed her for what happened to Raine not too long ago; it was also a fact that it was her carelessness that endangered the life of the boy she was supposed to protect.

Certainly, Raine claimed that it was due to his insistence of going to the Blacksmith Guild that fateful day that the two of them fell right into the trap laid by the minions of the church.

But the fact that she and her team did not ensure that the road towards the Blacksmith Guild was safe could not be denied. If put more effort to protecting the boy then that event would have never transpired...

"By the way, Raine, I heard you cooked for that dark elf's birthday when I was on a mission and served her your special dishes, was that true?"

While Tiana was contemplating on her failure, she heard Cloudia's question that involved her and could not help but look towards the siblings.

"Eh? How did you know that?" Raine asked, surprised.

Cloudia puffed her chest proudly, “you shouldn't underestimate me. I have ways to know that sort of thing, you know?" She replied.

"Is that so?" Raine went quiet for a few seconds and thought that it must be Silvia's older sister, Platina, who gotten the information from one of the many agents scattered in the kingdom. "Yeah, it's true; I did prepare the dishes we ate during Tiana's birthday party. Why did you asked?"

"Of course I would ask! Don't you think it's unfair that me and the girls couldn't eat the food you made?

"No, not really... I mean, it's Tiana's birthday party after all and you girls were out on a mission so it's normal that you miss out." Raine answered straightforwardly.

Shock!!!

"R-Raine... H-how could you say something so heartless to your beloved older sister?"

Cloudia received a shock like never before after hearing what Raine said and staggered on her seat. She could not believe that her beloved and cute younger brother would say something so heartless.

Sigh

"You’re exaggerating again, big sis... I simply answered your question."

Raine could only sigh and shake his head in exasperation after seeing his older sister's exaggerated reaction. He knew what his sister really want and could not help but tease her a little. "So, you want me to cook for you and the others?"

Cloudia's ears perked up and nodded her head like a chicken pecking on the ground. The change in her expression was so fast that Raine could only let out another sigh.

"Fine I'll do it. I still have a few more days before entering the item world so I don't really mind."

Cloudia smiled happily after getting her little brother's promise but was slightly taken aback that Raine would enter the item world in a few days.

"Oh? You're class is going to enter the item world already?" She asked.

"Um! It's been decided a few days ago. I have pretty much prepared everything before you returned.

The item world, like its name implies is a small world inside an item or artifact. To be more precise, it's an artifact-level magical tool with a small world inside. The small world has its own ecosystem with air, water, plants, animals and monsters inside. In other words, an item world is a world that can sustain life.

The item worlds were said to be created by ancient grand master craftsmen whose level were so high that they could create artifacts with small worlds inside. Unfortunately, the techniques in creating a small world inside artifacts were lost thousands of years ago and no one living at present could create a miniature world.

As such every miniature world were treated as national treasures, and could not be bought with money. The Royal academy has three of these item worlds and all of them were donated by the royal family to be used to train the students.

Every item worlds have their own level and the three in the academy were beginner, intermediate and advance item worlds respectively.

The item world that was to be used to train Raine and his classmates is a beginner item world which is perfect for the children's level. Since it's a beginner item world, the monsters there would be relatively weak and would not pose much of a threat to the students.

"Make sure to be careful in there, you hear? I know that the monsters inside the beginner item world are no match for you but that doesn't mean you could let you guard down." Cloudia advised.

"I know big sis... I'm not that careless." Raine replied with a nod. "By the way big sis... Stay here for a little bit while I cook something for you and your friend.

After saying those words, Raine left the room and went to borrow the dormitory kitchen. Since his sister made her desire for Earth food clear so he could not allow her to leave empty handed.

Back in the room, Cloudia and Tiana did not spoke a single word to each other after Raine left which made the atmosphere somewhat awkward. Although Cloudia loves to chat, that only applies to people she was closed to like her family and friends. As for people she's not close or familiar with, she remained quiet and taciturn.

Tiana on the other hand was never the talkative person to begin with. Despite what her outward appearance suggested, Tiana was actually a lone wolf and had difficulty opening up to people even when she's with her fellow agent. There were only very few people she could open herself up which included the crown prince Silvio, a few of her fellow agent and now Raine who she's especially fond of.

Although Cloudia was Raine's older sister, the two have a very awkward relationship since they're not close nor do they speak a lot with one another. Not to mention Cloudia seemed to dislike the fact that there's a girl very close to her brother despite the fact that the there's too much of age difference between the two.

The awkward atmosphere persisted for a while until Raine returned carrying a big box with two whole pizza and fried chickens inside. The box has heat insulation (one of Raine's invention) that would allow the food to remain warm for some time.

Cloudia was so happy after seeing the box and knowing of its content that she gave her little brother a tight hug which almost knocked the air out of Raine's lungs. Fortunately, she let go after noticing Raine's face turning blue and apologized while laughing awkwardly. She then left the boys' dormitory while carrying a big box while smiling happily.

"Tiana, I apologized for what my sister said to you earlier." Raine started after seeing her sister off.

"There's no need for apology because she's right. It was my carelessness that put you in danger. If I investigated the path that we’re going to take beforehand, we could have avoided the trap..." Tiana explained with regret in her voice.

"What are you talking about? We both know that it was me who insisted going to the guild." Raine countered.

"Didn't we go there to get my birthday present? I... I was actually looking forward to the present you prepared for me which was why I did not even try to stop you from going there despite the fact that you're being targeted by the zealots from the church." Tina admitted with a wry smile on her face.

Raine frown seeing his friend acting like that. He prefers the snarky and confident dark elf that he knew rather than the weak-looking girl in front of him.

"You're over thinking it. Do you think that I could avoid the pursuit from the church forever? Even if I was not caught in the grand formation that day I could still have been caught in their other traps. Didn't you say it yourself? Those guys were zealots; they won't give up on me so easily." Raine explained while crossing his arms. "You don't need to be guilty because none of it was your fault. The only reason she my sister was angry with you was because she's not there when I was in danger. She's probably angrier with herself than she is with you." He added.

Tiana was slightly taken aback but then a smile blossomed on her face. She knew that Raine was just trying to make her feel better but she could still not help but smile. Besides, knowing that the boy never blamed her made her felt a lot better.

"Let's go the dining room. I also made some food for us." Raine held Tiana's hand and led her to the dining room.

"Okay!"

That night, Raine went through all the stuff he's going to bring with him inside the item world one last time. Since he'll be busy in the coming days, Raine had to make sure that he had packed everything he needed.

"Good... that should be everything."

Raine repacked everything after making sure that he's not missing anything. The purpose of entering the item world was to assess how the students would cope in an unfamiliar environment so they could not really take too much with them except for the barest necessities. Thankfully, Raine used to live in the frontier and had experience with the outdoors thanks to his parents so he should be able to pass the assessment without much trouble.

"I should sleep now..."

After putting out the light of the lamp, Raine simply lied on his bed with his arms on the back of his head. A lot of things are running on the boy's mind and he could not sleep. Although not his intent, the boy got tangled in the conflict of his new world despite the fact that he only live peacefully in this new world.

"I wonder if this was all fated..." Raine asked himself.

Raine was no stranger to the concept of reincarnation and being transported to another world. After all he came from a world with a very develop culture where all kinds of genre had been explored including the highly popular but over-saturated isekai genre.

In those isekai stories, people that were being transported to the new world were expected to do something like fight the demon lord or something. But on his case he was born a daemon which could be considered the demon race of this world. What's more the daemons were simply one of the races of this world and were not considered evil like in some isekai stories so fighting against them makes no sense.

Was he supposed to slay the daemon king? There's no way. Forget that he's a lot weaker than the daemon king. In his opinion, the daemon king was a man worthy of his admiration. Sure, the daemon king fought in war against the humans decades ago but that was done to protect his kingdom and his citizens. What's more, despite being the victor, the daemon king did not impose his rules on his defeated foes but instead agreed on a more peaceful resolution to the war.

On the other hand, it was the Dark Church that was doing all of the bad things. So does that mean he was to fight against the church?

To be honest that seemed to be the likely case considering that he was being hunted by them. But at the same time, fighting the church doesn't seem to be his mission either... Or rather, does he even have a mission on this world?

"I should stop thinking of unnecessary things."

Sighing to himself, Raine closed his eyes but not before glancing at the wall. The wall was what separate Raine's room from the other room. There's really nothing special about the wall or the room next to him but rather the person occupying it.

Who's the occupant you asked?

It was Raine's personal bodyguard and friend, the dark elf Tiana.

Raine didn't know what string the crown prince pulled that made it possible for Tiana, a female to be able reside inside the boys' dormitory. With how the academy works, that shouldn't have been possible even for the crown prince. The only person Raine could think of that could make it all possible was the king himself.

Did the king personally persuade the school management to allow Tiana to occupy the room next to him? From the looks of it that seemed to be the case.

"Come to think of it... My big sister seemed to be unaware of the king's arrangement. If she knew she would have made a lot of fuzz about it."

Thinking of his over-attached older sister, Raine could only smile wryly. Honestly, both his siblings are quite attached to him not that he mind. In reality there attachment actually made him really happy.
Several minutes after closing his eyes, Raine finally drifted into dreamland...

A quarter of an hour later, the window on the boy's room slowly opened and a figure quietly opened. The figure sat on the seat near the study table and watched the boy sleep without doing anything.

"How defenseless..." The figure spoke.

The figure observing the sleeping Raine was none other than Tiana who had been patiently waiting for the boy to sleep. Raine thought that Tiana was resting on the other room. Unbeknownst to him, Tiana had been secretly guarding the perimeter of the boys' dormitory while making sure he doesn't notice. Only when Raine sleep does she dare enter his room in order to protect him while he sleeps.

Usually she would not be this intrusive and would the give the boy his private space. But after the event with the grand formation where the two of them almost died, Tiana became over-protective and a little extreme in ensuring the safety of the boy.

In reality, it was her suggestion that allowed her to occupy the room next to his (by kicking out the poor soul previously occupying said room). Certainly, it was the king who did everything to make it possible but it was her suggestion that started it all.

Tiana smiled seeing the boy sleep peacefully. She wished that the boy's peaceful life would continue for the rest of his life but she knew that it was no longer possible. The church will not stop hounding him till the day he died.

"No matter what... I won't allow them to harm you as long as I lived...."

As promised, Raine cooked for Cloudia and her friends, a sort of mission completion celebration, or so the girls claimed. To make sure that they're satisfied, Raine cooked as much food as he could especially since he'll be entering the item world in a few days. With one promised fulfilled, the boy could finally relax, or so he thought.

A day later, Raine was dragged by Elsa, Fred's wife to the re-opening of their restaurant that was subject to a slight renovation in preparation for the introduction of the restaurant's new cuisines. As the person who introduced the new cuisine, Raine could not escape the responsibility of attending the celebration. Even though there was an agreement between them and Fred's company not to divulge the true identity of the person who "invented" said cuisines, Raine must still be present as a sign of friendship and respect. Only when the celebration was over did Elsa finally release the boy from his suffering.

Plop

Raine plopped into the embrace of his warm bed at the dormitory after taking off his coat and shoes. The poor boy didn't even bothered changing into more comfortable sleeping attire. Raine was actually mentally drained instead of being physically exhausted. With his physique he could stay awake for a few days without suffering from physical exhaustion but meeting different kind of people whose status are not ordinary could drain anyone mentally especially if you're like Raine who have very few experience at attending formal parties.

"You could have rejected the invitation, you know? Even though Elsa sort of dragged you to attend the party you could still make some excuse if you like." Tiana, who's comfortably sitting on a chair while wearing a formal dress complained while pouting.

"I know but Elsa rarely ask me for a favor so I could not just reject her right? Besides, I also have the responsibility to attend since I'm the inventor although very few people present in the party knew about it." Raine answered with a wry smile on his face.

"How troublesome..."

Tiana let out a sigh of exasperation. As Raine's personal guard, Tiana have to be present as well. Although it was not her first time attending formal parties like the one Raine attended, she's still not use to it. No, rather, she finds it troublesome and annoying. She especially dislikes the gazes of some of the male attendees who were attracted to her looks. Even though she's wearing a rather conservative formal dress during the party it could still not hide her beautiful face and attractive figure. If not for Elsa and Raine's sake she would have beaten those men who dared gawked at her already.

"I think you should rest as well." Raine advised after looking at Tiana's exhausted face.

"Don't worry about me, go get some sleep. You need to be in top shape when you enter the item world." Tiana responded.

"Okay..." Raine said while slowly closing his eyes. "By the way that dress looks good on you..."

Tiana was slightly taken aback by the unexpected praise from the boy and could not help but feel a little embarrassed. "...Thanks." She whispered in a tiny voice.

The next day...
