[Esp-Eng] Visitando un Submarino / Visiting a Submarine

Hasta ese momento yo nunca había visto uno en vivo y directo, tenía cierta noción de su utilidad pero cuando pensaba en su existencia lo que me venía a la mente era la famosa canción de Los Beatles, Yellow submarine (Submarino amarillo) y su pegajoso coro: “We all live in a yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine…”

Until that moment I had never seen one live and direct, I had a certain notion of its usefulness but when I thought about its existence what came to mind was the famous Beatles song, Yellow submarine and its catchy chorus : "We all live in a yellow submarine, yellow submarine, yellow submarine ..."

Este submarino que fui a conocer para hacer un trabajo periodístico no era amarillo, pero su forma era la misma jejeje.

This submarine that I went to meet to do journalistic work was not yellow, but its shape was the same hehehe.

Para realizar el reportaje, la agencia de noticias donde trabajaba me envió a la Base Naval de Puerto Cabello, estado Carabobo (Venezuela), donde se encontraba el Submarino AB Sábalo (S-31) luciendo como nuevo porque había sido sometido a mantenimiento mayor por la Armada venezolana.

To carry out the report, the news agency where I worked sent me to the Puerto Cabello Naval Base, Carabobo state (Venezuela), where the AB Sábalo Submarine (S-31) was located looking like new because it had been subjected to major maintenance by the Venezuelan Navy.

El objetivo de mi visita era hacer un recorrido dentro del submarino para que me mostraran su óptimo funcionamiento tras las renovaciones.

The objective of my visit was to take a tour inside the submarine to show me its optimal operation after the renovations.

Este navío con nombre de pez es de fabricación alemana y fue traído a Venezuela en 1976, desde entonces ha sido reparado en Alemania dos veces y la tercera vez este trabajo de modernización se hizo por primera vez en Venezuela, en los Diques y Astilleros Nacionales (Dianca), que están en Puerto Cabello.

This ship with the name of a fish is of German manufacture and was brought to Venezuela in 1976, since then it has been repaired in Germany twice and the third time this modernization work was done for the first time in Venezuela, in the National Docks and Shipyards ( Dianca), who are in Puerto Cabello.

Cuando vi el submarino en el puerto me pareció pequeño porque sólo era visible una parte de él, la otra estaba sumergida, pero luego al ingresar observé que tiene muchas áreas, me pareció increíble todo lo que puede albergar.

When I saw the submarine in the port it seemed small because only one part of it was visible, the other was submerged, but then when I entered I observed that it has many areas, it seemed incredible to me all that it can hold.

Allí recorrimos la parte donde están los camarotes con literas, la cocina y el comedor, una pequeña sala de reuniones y por supuesto toda el área que tiene que ver con su funcionamiento: sala de máquinas, radares, el periscopio, etc. El sistema de control, los de integración y los sensores del aparato fueron algunos de los elementos renovados.

There we toured the part where the cabins with bunk beds, the kitchen and the dining room are, a small meeting room and of course the entire area that has to do with its operation: engine room, radars, the periscope, etc. The control system, the integration systems and the device's sensors were some of the renewed elements.

Según me dijo el Almirante Eladio Jiménez Rattia, quien era el Comandante del AB Sábalo (S-31), este puede llegar a una velocidad en la superficie de 12 nudos (22 Km/hora) y cuando se sumerge 22 nudos (40 km/hora), asimismo la profundidad máxima que alcanza es de 300 metros y su autoabastecimiento puede ser de hasta 50 días.

According to Admiral Eladio Jiménez Rattia, who was the Commander of AB Sábalo (S-31), it can reach a surface speed of 12 knots (22 km/hour) and when it submerges 22 knots (40 Km/hour), the maximum depth it reaches is 300 meters and its self-sufficiency can be up to 50 days.

Pero ¿por qué es importante que un país tenga submarinos? Básicamente se utilizan para defender la soberanía de los mares.

But why is it important for a country to have submarines? They are basically used to defend the sovereignty of the seas.

Sus principales funciones son labores de inteligencia, vigilancia, investigación científica, lucha antinarcóticos, contra el contrabando, entre otras.

Its main functions are intelligence, surveillance, scientific research, anti-drug, anti-smuggling tasks, among others.

Fueron muy usados por las grandes potencias durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, actualmente casi todas las armadas del mundo cuentan con submarinos. Al ser difíciles de detectar cuando navegan a gran profundidad son muy útiles desde el punto de vista militar.

They were widely used by the great powers during the First World War, currently almost all the world's navies have submarines. Being difficult to detect when navigating deep, they are very useful from a military point of view.

El Submarino AB Sábalo (S-31) tiene tanto tripulación masculina como femenina, todos capacitados para que este aparato realice sus funciones con efectividad. Las mujeres venezolanas son pioneras de esta área en Latinoamérica.

The Submarine AB Sábalo (S-31) has both male and female crew, all trained so that this apparatus performs its functions effectively. Venezuelan women are pioneers in this area in Latin America.

Con la actualización tecnológica que se le hizo, este submarino continúa sus tareas de seguridad y defensa participando en operaciones, maniobras y ejercicios de la Armada.

With the technological update that was made, this submarine continues its security and defense tasks participating in operations, maneuvers and exercises of the Navy.

Aunque no navegamos durante el tiempo que estuve dentro del submarino entrevistando a varias personas, me sentí como si lo hubiera hecho por todas las explicaciones que me dieron, fue una experiencia realmente diferente e interesante.

Although we didn't sail during the time I was inside the submarine interviewing several people, I felt as if I had done it because of all the explanations they gave me, it was a really different and interesting experience.
