[Esp-Eng] Mi experiencia participando en ferias de artesanos / My experience participating in artisan fairs

Ya que estamos en época navideña, días en los que la gente compra cosas nuevas tanto para sí misma como para regalar, les contaré en esta publicación sobre mi experiencia participando en ferias de artesanos.

Greetings community!
Since we are in the Christmas season, days when people buy new things both for themselves and to give as gifts, I will tell you in this post about my experience participating in artisan fairs.

Desde hace unos años, junto a mi hermana he vendido las piezas que hago a mano en este tipo de eventos y la verdad es que ha sido muy gratificante, no sólo que la gente te compre algo sino también recibir elogios porque lo que haces les gusta.

For a few years, together with my sister, I have sold the pieces that I make by hand in these types of events and the truth is that it has been very gratifying, not only because people buy something from me, I have also received praise because they like what I do.

En mi caso, desde que mi abuela me enseñó cuando era pequeña, siempre me ha gustado tejer a ganchillo, había hecho algunas blusas para mí y ya, no lo había tomado como una actividad económica, una opción para obtener ingresos extra hasta que mi hermana, que sí lo había hecho y vendía sus tejidos hechos en telar y otras piezas por Internet, me incentivó a intentarlo también.

In my case, since my grandmother taught me when I was little, I have always liked to crochet, I had made some blouses for me and nothing else, I had not taken it as an economic activity, an option to obtain extra income until my sister, who had done it and sold her weavings made on a loom and other pieces on the Internet, encouraged me to try it too.

Ella ya tenía el nombre de su marca: Lemóni, con logo y todo y yo decidí unirme, más adelante abrí un perfil en Instagram para mostrar nuestras piezas allí y comercializarlas, aparte de ropa y trajes de baño también hacemos algunos accesorios como pulseras, zarcillos, monederos, carteras, bufandas, entre otras. Mi mamá también se unió con cosas que hace, entonces se podría decir que esto se volvió un emprendimiento familiar jejeje.

She already had her brand name: Lemóni, with a logo and everything and I decided to join, later I opened a profile on Instagram to show our pieces there and market them, apart from clothes and swimsuits we also make some accessories such as bracelets, earrings, wallets, bags, scarves, among others. My mom also joined in with the things she does, so you could say that this became a family business hehehe.

Ya activas en las redes sociales, comenzamos a ver que había mucha gente organizando ferias artesanales por ahí y mi hermana se animó a participar en una, a probar qué tal, desde ese momento hemos estado yendo a varios de estos eventos, no sólo en Navidad, también en otras épocas del año, claro que el ambiente navideño y de fin de año es insuperable, porque hay más gente, conciertos, parrandas y todo lo que caracteriza estas fiestas, y por supuesto también se vende más.

Already active in social networks, we began to see that there were many people organizing craft fairs out there and my sister was encouraged to participate in one, to try how it was, since then we have been going to several of these events, not only at Christmas also at other times of the year, of course the Christmas and New Year's atmosphere is insurmountable, because there are more people, concerts, parties and everything that characterizes these holidays, and of course you also sell more.

Al principio no sabíamos la logística e inversión que implica participar en una feria, fuimos aprendiendo en el camino. Aparte de pagar para participar, tienes que pensar, por ejemplo en cómo presentar lo que vas a vender para que atraiga a la gente, en estos eventos hemos visto muchos stands realmente creativos.

At first we didn't know the logistics and investment involved in participating in a fair, we learned along the way. Apart from paying to participate, you have to think, for example, about how to present what you are going to sell so that it attracts people, in these events we have seen many really creative stands.

Igualmente, hay organizadores que incluyen mesa, sillas y mantel en sus ferias, mientras que otros no, tú tienes que llevar tu mobiliario. Nosotras no tenemos ni mesa ni sillas, sólo un perchero donde colgamos algunas de nuestras piezas, entonces las veces que hemos estado en ferias que no te incluyen esto, las hemos pedido prestadas.

Likewise, there are organizers that include a table, chairs and tablecloth at their fairs, while others don't, you have to bring your furniture. We don't have a table or chairs, just a coat rack where we hang some of our pieces, so the times we've been to fairs that don't include this, we've borrowed them.

Lo mismo ocurre con el punto de venta, hay organizadores que lo incluyen y te cobran un porcentaje por usarlo y otros que no lo incluyen, en ese caso siempre hemos tenido la suerte de que otro artesano tiene punto de venta y nos hace el favor de prestarlo, y claro también está la opción de otros métodos de pago como Pago Móvil (pago a través del teléfono celular) y efectivo.

The same happens with the point of sale, there are organizers who include it and charge you a percentage for using it and others who don't include it, in that case we have always been lucky that another artisan has a point of sale and does us the favor of lend it, and of course there is also the option of other payment methods such as Mobile Payment (payment through cell phone) and cash.

La desventaja al no tener nuestro propio punto de venta es que debemos esperar que nos transfieran el dinero al terminar la feria si es de pocos días o al final de la semana si el evento dura más.

The disadvantage of not having our own point of sale is that we must wait for the money to be transferred to us at the end of the fair if it is for a few days or at the end of the week if the event lasts longer.

Otro aspecto a considerar es el traslado y resguardo de las piezas que llevas a las ferias. En nuestro caso tenemos unas mochilas y maletas para cargar todo cómodamente, a veces usamos una maleta grande para todo o cada una lleva una pequeña. En las ferias que hemos participado, algunas de tres días y otras de hasta quince, cada mañana debes montar tu stand y al finalizar el día de trabajo debes desmontarlo y tus cosas se quedan guardadas en un depósito que los organizadores han dispuesto. Hay gente que vende piezas pequeñas, por ejemplo joyas, que no las deja en el depósito, pero la mayoría lleva cosas más grandes y es muy incómodo estar trayendo y llevando a casa las piezas todos los días mientras dura el evento, por eso este tema del resguardo de la mercancía es algo que todo participante pregunta y quiere tener asegurado cuando decide estar en una feria.

Another aspect to consider is the transfer and storage of the pieces that you take to the fairs. In our case we have backpacks and suitcases to carry everything comfortably, sometimes we use a large suitcase for everything or each one carries a small one. In the fairs that we have participated, some of three days and others of up to fifteen, every morning you must set up your stand and at the end of the working day you must dismantle it and your things are kept in a deposit that the organizers have arranged. There are people who sell small pieces, for example jewelry, who don't leave them in the deposit, but most carry larger things and it is very uncomfortable to be bringing and taking home the pieces every day during the event, that's why this topic, the protection of the merchandise is something that every participant asks and wants to have insured when they decide to be at a fair.

También es importante que el espacio donde se va a desarrollar la feria tenga baños para los expositores, por ejemplo cuando hemos participado en las ferias navideñas que se han hecho en la zona de Bellas Artes, en Caracas (Venezuela), nos dan permiso para utilizar los baños de las instituciones culturales que están ahí, como el Museo de Ciencias si estamos en sus jardines o los de la Unearte (Universidad Nacional Experimental de las Artes) y el Teatro Teresa Carreño si estamos instalados en sus espacios abiertos.

It is also important that the space where the fair is going to take place has bathrooms for the exhibitors, for example when we have participated in the Christmas fairs that have been held in the Bellas Artes area, in Caracas (Venezuela), they give us permission to use the bathrooms of the cultural institutions that are there, such as the Science Museum if we are in its gardens or those of the Unearte (National Experimental University of the Arts) and the Teresa Carreño Theater if we are installed in its open spaces.

Y hablando del baño, lo ideal es que haya dos personas para atender el stand, porque si una quiere ir al baño o hacer pausa para comer, el puesto no puede quedarse solo. Por ejemplo en varias ferias que hemos estado, como yo trabajaba de 7:00 am a 3:00 pm iba a ayudar a mi hermana en las tardes, entonces ella cuando quería ir al baño le pedía al artesano que estaba al lado que le cuidara el stand.

And speaking of the bathroom, the ideal is that there are two people to attend the stand, because if one wants to go to the bathroom or take a break to eat, the stand cannot be left alone. For example, in several fairs that we have been to, since I worked from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. I went to help my sister in the afternoons, so when she wanted to go to the bathroom, she asked the exhibitor who was next to take care of her stand.

Lo mismo pasa cuando quieres almorzar y estás sola atendiendo tu stand, es incómodo tener que comer ahí mientras pasa la gente y te pregunta sobre tus piezas, y tú con la boca llena, masticando y tratando de responder y lograr vender jajaja nada agradable esa situación.

The same happens when you want to have lunch and you are alone tending your stand, it is uncomfortable to have to eat there while people pass by and ask you about your pieces, and you with your mouth full, chewing and trying to answer and manage to sell hahaha, that situation is not pleasant.

En conclusión, si tienes un emprendimiento y se te da la oportunidad de participar en una feria, no lo pienses dos veces, no sólo tendrás la oportunidad de vender lo que haces, también vas a conocer a otras personas que están en la misma onda, eso potencia la mente, la creatividad, y de ahí pueden surgir cosas interesantes. Por ejemplo, a nosotras nos han invitado a ferias hechas por artesanos organizados en donde no tienes que pagar para participar, sino colaborar con algún aspecto de la organización del evento.

In conclusion, if you have a entrepreneurship and you are given the opportunity to participate in a fair, don't think twice, you will not only have the opportunity to sell what you do, you will also meet other people who are on the same wave, that enhances the mind, creativity, and interesting things can come from there. For example, we have been invited to fairs made by organized artisans where you don't have to pay to participate, but rather collaborate with some aspect of the organization of the event.

Quizás en algunas ferias vendas mucho y en otras nada, nos ha pasado, pero en este caso hay que pensar que al menos diste a conocer tu trabajo directamente al público y muchos de ellos te van a seguir por redes sociales y hasta te compran algo después, nos ha sucedido, de manera que puedo decir que mi experiencia al participar en ferias de artesanos siempre me ha dejado cosas positivas y buenos amigos.

Maybe in some fairs you sell a lot and in others nothing, it has happened to us, but in this case you have to think that at least you made your work known directly to the public and many of them will follow you on social networks and they even buy something from you later, it has happened to us, so I can say that my experience participating in artisan fairs has always left me positive things and good friends.
