Unos amigos nos invitaron a mi hermana y a mí a un lugar que ellos tampoco conocían, pero que les habían recomendado, ¡y resultó toda una sorpresa! Acompáñenme a conocer el Cerro El Aguacate y su fabulosa cascada.

Some friends invited my sister and me to a place that they didn't know either, but had been recommended to them, and it was quite a surprise! Join me to get to know Cerro El Aguacate (Avocado Hill) and its fabulous waterfall.

Esta belleza natural se encuentra en el estado Carabobo, Venezuela, en la población de San Joaquín, famosa por las “panelas de San Joaquín”, unos sabrosos biscochos que muchos vendedores ambulantes ofrecen en los alrededores.

This natural beauty is found in the Carabobo state, Venezuela, in the town of San Joaquín, famous for the “panelas de San Joaquín”, tasty biscuits that many street vendors offer on nearby roads.

Desde la ciudad de Maracay nos fuimos para allá un sábado temprano en la mañana con el carro de mi amiga y en poco más de media hora ya estábamos cerca. Como no conocíamos la zona preguntamos a una persona de por ahí dónde quedaba exactamente la entrada hacia el Cerro El Aguacate, nos indicó el camino y llegamos a unos grandes portones pertenecientes a una finca, los cuales estaban abiertos. Allí estacionamos, había una cancha improvisada de beisbol, un kiosko de comida y algunas personas yendo hacia el sendero al que nosotros íbamos.

From the city of Maracay we went there one Saturday early in the morning with my friend's car and in just over half an hour we were already close. As we didn't know the area, we asked a person from there where exactly the entrance to Cerro El Aguacate was, he indicated the way and we came to some large gates belonging to a farm, which were open. There we parked, there was a makeshift baseball field, a food kiosk and some people going towards the path we were going to.

Hacía bastante calor y al principio el camino de tierra con una ligera elevación y sin nada de vegetación se nos hizo un poco pesado.

It was quite hot and at first the dirt road with a slight elevation and without any vegetation became a bit heavy for us.

Luego de más de media hora caminando el sendero ya no era abierto, comenzamos a adentrarnos en un bosque, así que el clima se volvió fresco.

After more than half an hour walking, the path was no longer open, we began to enter a forest, so the weather turned cool.

Íbamos caminando tranquilamente cuando de repente casi nos atropellan unos ciclistas que venían bajando a toda velocidad y que no vimos debido a las curvas que tiene la ruta. No sabíamos que el cerro El Aguacate es muy usado por corredores y ciclistas de montaña para entrenar, después de eso estábamos más alertas.

We were walking calmly when suddenly we were almost run over by some cyclists who were coming down at full speed and that we didn't see due to the curves that the route has. We didn't know that El Aguacate hill is widely used by runners and mountain bikers for training, after that we were more alert.

Por ahí también hay monos, aunque no logramos verlos por lo espeso de la vegetación, escuchamos sus aullidos.

There are also monkeys there, although we couldn't see them due to the dense vegetation, we hear their howls.

Este lugar, averigüé después, también tiene su importancia dentro de la historia de Venezuela, encontré en el Catálogo del Patrimonio Cultural Venezolano, editado por el IPC (Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural) que allí fracasó la expedición de Los Cayos, organizada por el Libertador Simón Bolívar para liberar al país de los españoles.

This place, I found out later, also has its importance within the history of Venezuela, I found in the Catalog of the Venezuelan Cultural Heritage, published by the Institute of Cultural Heritage, that the expedition of Los Cayos, organized by the Liberator Simón Bolívar to liberate the country from the Spanish, failed there.

“En el año 1816 el coronel Carlos Soublette ataca los valles de Aragua y llega hasta Maracay pero al tener noticias de la llegada del jefe realista Morales se retira hasta las faldas del cerro El Aguacate. Llega a la serranía y al ser seguido por los realistas traban combate sangriento. En esta batalla mueren cerca de 500 hombres de ambos bandos; los patriotas fueron rodeados en la misma montaña perdiéndose gran cantidad de armas y municiones. Esta acción de guerra es la única de gran relieve ocurrido en territorio de este municipio y en los últimos momentos de combate fue dirigido por el propio Bolívar, el ejército republicano fue derrotado luego de largas horas de arduo combate y se retiró a marchas forzadas hacia Ocumare de la Costa embarcándose Bolívar hacia el mar Caribe”. Volviendo a nuestra excursión, nuestro objetivo era llegar a la cascada, la cual según nos dijeron estaba a unos 7 km del punto de partida del sendero. Al no haber subidas ni bajadas abruptas esta ruta es de baja dificultad.

Returning to our excursion, the objective was to reach the waterfall, which we were told was about 7 km from the starting point of the trail. As there are no abrupt ascents or descents, this route is of low difficulty.

Cuando teníamos aproximadamente una hora caminando llegamos a un pequeño pozo, donde aprovechamos para refrescarnos un poco echándonos agua en la cara, estaba muy fría.

When we had about an hour walking we reached a small well, where we took the opportunity to cool off a bit by pouring water on our faces, it was very cold.

En el camino aparecieron estos amiguitos y nos acompañaron a la cascada / On the way these little friends appeared and accompanied us to the waterfall

Después subimos por un caminito lateral con grandes piedras para llegar a la cascada que ya escuchábamos desde abajo.

Then we went up a side path with large stones to reach the waterfall that we could already hear from below.

En la cascada había un grupo de personas practicando barranquismo o canyoning, una disciplina que consiste en bajar con cuerdas a través de barrancos y cañones por los que circula un río.

At the waterfall there was a group of people practicing canyoning, a discipline that consists of descending with ropes through ravines and canyons through which a river circulates.

Por supuesto también había personas bañándose allí y en algunos pozos que había más abajo. ¡El agua estaba helada!

Of course there were also people bathing there and in some of the wells below. The water was freezing!

Nuestro amigo Sebastián se lanzó con ganas / Our friend Sebastián launched himself with enthusiasm

Aunque yo no iba preparada para meterme al agua porque no había llevado traje de baño, no resistí la tentación y me metí con la ropa que llevaba puesta jajaja.

Although I wasn't prepared to go into the water because I had not worn a bathing suit, I didn't resist the temptation and I got in with the clothes I was wearing hahaha.

Luego nos sentamos un rato a comer lo que habíamos llevado y a observar cómo hacían canyoning. No sé la altura exacta de la cascada pero parecía tener más de 10 metros.

Then we sat for a while to eat what we had brought and to watch how they did canyoning. I don't know the exact height of the waterfall but it seemed to be over 10 meters.

Ya era hora de regresar, yo tenía aún mi ropa mojada, pero con el calor y el sol que hacía, se me iba a secar en el camino.

It was time to go back, I still had my clothes wet, but with the heat and the sun, it was going to dry on the way.

Whether short or long, a walk in the middle of nature always revitalizes us!
