That endless circle of learning called life - Ese circulo interminable de aprendizaje llamado vida

This weekend I shared a lot of time and very nice talks with my eldest daughter. She is at the age where questions invade her existence and from which she wishes to obtain an answer that gives her sufficient arguments, tranquility and confidence and that is obviously consistent with our way of raising her. If this were not the case with my wife, we would be in a lot of trouble since children today are very attentive and detect almost instantly when you find incongruities between what we teach them and what we do.

Este fin de semana he compartido mucho tiempo y muy lindas charlas con mi hija mayor. Ella está en la edad e donde las preguntas invaden su existencia y de las cuales desea obtener una respuesta que le de argumentos suficientes, tranquilidad y confianza y que obviamente sea consistente con nuestra manera de criarla. De no ser así con mi esposa nos encontraríamos en un gran lío ya que los niños de hoy en día son muy atentos y detectan casi al instante cuando encuentras incongruencias entre lo que le enseñamos y lo que hacemos.

His questions this time came from the side of the school, and everything he was going to have to study to finish elementary school, then high school, then college. I was wondering precisely why he had to learn so many things that he sees as so difficult and that take up so much of his favorite pastime which is playing.

Sus interrogantes esta vez vinieron por el lado de la escuela, y de todo lo que iba a tener que estudiar para terminar la escuela primaria, luego la secundaria y luego la universidad. Precisamente me preguntaba porque tenía que aprender tantas cosas que ve tan difíciles y que tanto tiempo sacan a su pasatiempo favorito que es jugar.

Intuitively I started my explanation by telling him that human beings spend their whole life learning, since we are born and come out of the mother's womb we must learn to breathe by ourselves and to suck the mother's breast in order to survive and for that they need help from their parents.

Intuitivamente comencé mi explicación diciéndole que los seres humanos pasamos toda la vida aprendiendo, desde que nacemos y salimos del vientre materno debemos aprender a respirar por nosotros mismos y a succionar el pecho materno para poder sobrevivir y para ello necesitan ayuda de sus padres.

As they grow up, those first words appear and their first little steps, which are such tender moments and cause so much emotion. For this we parents are also behind them stimulating and encouraging them to learn, to develop and to achieve their first weapons in this world. Of course, unlike other stages of life, learning here is done through play and without pressure, so perhaps it is not experienced as pressure by our children.

A medida que van creciendo aparecen esas primeras palabras que y sus primeros pasitos, que son momentos tan tiernos y que tanta emoción nos causa. Para esto también los padres estamos detrás de ellos estimulando e incentivando a que aprendan, a que se desarrollen y a que logren sus primeras armas en este mundo. Claro está que a diferencia de otras etapas de la vida aquí el aprendizaje es a través de juegos y sin presiones, con lo cual quizá no es vivido como una presión por nuestros niños.

I also told her that children reach an age where they no longer want to listen to their parents' words, and it is the stage where we who were children once discovered that our parents were not as perfect as we might have thought. That we also make mistakes and many times make unwise decisions that are a learning experience for us.

También le conté que los niños llegan a una edad donde ya no quieren hacer caso a las palabras de los padres, y es la etapa en donde nos quienes fuimos hijos descubrimos alguna vez que nuestros padres no eran lo tan perfectos como podíamos creer. Que también nos equivocamos y mucha veces tomamos decisiones desacertadas que son un aprendizaje para nosotros.

I also explained to him that while learning new knowledge was important, the most important thing in life is to learn to find what makes us happy and to put a lot of passion into it in order to do it in the best way. I am one of those who think that it is not necessary for our children to be university professionals, but I think that there are many other areas for which university education is a great failure.

También le expliqué que si bien el aprendizaje de conocimientos nuevos era importante, lo primordial en la vida es aprender a encontrar lo que nos hace felices y a eso ponerle mucha pasión para poder hacerlo de la mejor manera. Yo soy de quienes piensan que no es necesario que nuestros hijos tengan que ser si o sí profesionales universitarios, sino que pienso que hay muchos otros ámbitos para los cuales la formación universitaria es un gran fracaso.

Beyond the world of knowledge it is always important to stimulate them in that which they like so much because perhaps their future lies there.

Más allá del mundo del conocimiento siempre es importante estimularlos en aquello que tanto les gusta porque quizá allí esté su futuro.

I don't want to impose the steps she will take when she has the tools and maturity to make her own decisions, but rather try to show her the path and the alternatives she has so that she can then choose.

I also told her that we too had had to learn many things when she was born, and these are things for which there is no institute to train you as a father, but the path is made as it goes along, and in which we surely make an infinite number of mistakes from which we also learn. I am not afraid or ashamed to admit to my daughter that I am also wrong. I believe that with this, our children gain the confidence they need to develop as confident people.

También le conté que nosotros también habíamos tenido que aprender muchas cosas cuando ella nació, y son cosas para las cuales no hay un instituto que te forme como padre, sino que el camino se va haciendo a medida que transcurre y en el cual seguramente se cometen infinidad de errores de los cuales también aprendemos. A mí no me atemoriza, ni me averguenza a reconocerle a mi hija que también me equivoco. Creo que con ello, nuestros pequeños toman la confianza que necesitan para desarrollarse como personas seguras de si mismas.

No quiero imponer los pasos que ella dará cuando tenga las herramientas y madurez para tomar sus propias decisiones, sino que intento mostrarle el camino y las alternativas que tiene para que ella luego elija.

I don't want her to be a renowned physician, a successful lawyer, or a scientist who dazzles the world with her discoveries. My wish is just that she be happy! And that's what I'm trying to teach her.

No quiero que sea una médica reconocida, una abogada exitosa, ni una científica que deslumbre al mundo con sus descubrimientos. Mi deseo es tan solo que sea feliz! y eso intento enseñarle.
