Toilets of Thailand #4 - Chomna, Min Buri

avatar

Chomna is yet another 'typical' but quite lovely Thai eating establishment with the usual range of fayre, slightly above average in cost but well worth it for the quality of food in my friend's opinion.....

It was well designed with a mix of stonework, hardwoods and well-tended grounds combining to provide a 'jungle' feel. The placement of various 'animals' (quite nice ones, not the usual, awful Thai style fibreglass ones that you see at the side of the road!) around the place added to the effect as did a walk across a wooden, raised path through a paddy field to get from the car park to the restaurant itself. Not quite Indiana Jones but a really nice entrance.

Well laid out, with both open and aircon eating areas. A bar with a wide range of beers and menus available in English. A guy playing guitar and singing who was a cut above average, his mainly English repertoire was not really my taste but his covers put a twist on the standard, bland, middle-of-the-road classics. Good company and a wonderful and cool 26C all added to a very pleasant evening but there was a wonderful surprise in store.....

What are the toilets like?

Awesome. Probably my favourites in the whole of Thailand. It's all in the design!

Firstly, the semi-open structure was circular and continued the jungle theme but added a twist of industrial to the proceedings. The stone entrance with the steel letters 'M' and 'W', backlight in blue LED lights (which are my real initials!) added a modern feel whilst retaining the charm.

image.png

The half closest to the eating areas was simply a roof with a bamboo/cane screen to protect the modesty of the ladies using it and just three simple cubicles, two sinks and a mirror.

The ladies also got nice plants and a tree incorporated into the structure which just added to the jungle ambience.

I really appreciated the symmetry of the whole place with gent's half being a mirror image apart from the screen but with three simple concrete pillars supporting three urinals and an unrestricted view across the paddy field.

One of the very unique features were the cubicle doors. They were fantastic. Tall, unfinished, wooden double doors with rattan dividers on each trap!

image.png

The rest of the surfaces, as you can see were a very trendy, smooth-finished and epoxied concrete with the minimum of decoration and signage...

... and then there were the sinks!!

image.png

Seriously. How cool are they? Standalone barrel style wooden sinks sat on chequer plate with industrial taps and showerhead. Yes there was soap, yes there were paper-towels and none of it was on the floor. The bins are just off shot.

How great is that sink? If anyone is wandering, we don't really do hot water in Thailand!

The Final Score

Design: 10/10 - Absolutely sublime. Perfect for the surroundings and continuing the theme of the restaurant. Simple design that's perfectly functional and executed perfectly

Ambience: 8/10 - A speaker gently relayed the singer but not so obtrusively that you couldn't hear the toads croaking in the small canal by the rice field. Lovely!

Cleanliness: 8/10 - It was perfectly acceptable. No trash on the floor. Plenty of paper towels to be had and bins to put them in and both urinals and toilets were clean. No blockages! It's an outdoor toilet. It isn't going to be of the same standard as spotless mall WC!

Supplies: 7/10 - Soap, paper towels and a bottle of sanitizer were on offer. No actual toilet roll but that's not unusual. We have bum-guns and a law that states we cant flush it down the toilet anyway!

Overall 9/10 - For me, the best toilets in Thailand so far. I just loved the design.

And that's it for this edition! I hope everyone is keeping safe and sane and wish you all a wonderful holiday and the happiest of New Years. Let's be honest, it can't be any worse than last year!

I have of course pinned this to @pinmapple for posteriorerity and look forward to sharing more bathroom adventures with you soon :-)

three urinals and an unrestricted view across the paddy field.

Is the latter point good? Some other dude gawking at my man-bits doesn't give points.., I would add another section myself.., Privacy while Draining the Lizard x/10.
