My Mother's Bread
I called my mother up several months ago asking for it and jotted it down hastily as she narrated it over the phone.
"My Mother's Bread" can evoke a sense of nostalgia and warmth, bringing back memories of a special homemade recipe passed down through generations. A mother's bread recipe is often treasured for its unique flavor, texture, and personal history. Here's a simple bread recipe that you can customize with your own family's traditions and flavors:
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 teaspoons salt
- Optional: 1/4 cup milk, for brushing the top (for a soft crust)
Instructions
Activate the Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it's foamy and bubbly. This indicates that the yeast is active.
Mix the Dough: Add the melted butter and salt to the yeast mixture, then gradually add the flour while stirring with a wooden spoon or a dough hook attachment on a stand mixer. Mix until the dough comes together.
Knead the Dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If it's sticky, add a bit more flour as needed.
First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Bread: Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased bread pan. You can also shape it into rolls or a round boule if you prefer.
Second Rise: Cover the shaped dough and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes, or until it has nearly doubled in size.
Bake the Bread: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). If desired, brush the top of the dough with milk for a softer crust. Bake the bread for 25-35 minutes, or until it's golden brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped. If making rolls, adjust the baking time to 15-20 minutes.
Cool and Serve: Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve with butter, jam, or your favorite spreads.
This basic bread recipe can be adapted with various add-ins, such as herbs, cheese, or nuts, to make it uniquely yours. Enjoy the comfort and tradition of your mother's bread recipe.
