Guavas (Psidium) are a genus of about one hundred species of tropical trees and small trees in the Myrtaceae family, native to the Caribbean, Central America, North America, and South America. The leaves are opposite, simple, elliptical to oval, 5 to 15 centimeters long. The flowers are white, with five petals and numerous stamens.
The fruit is edible, round or pear-shaped, between 3 to 10 cm in diameter (up to 12 cm in select crops). It has a thin and delicate bark, pale green to yellow in the mature stage in some species, pink to red in others, creamy white or orange flesh with many hard seeds and a strong characteristic aroma.
