Happy Caturday: stray cats at the temple,

Having been locking myself down at home for a few days, I felt I needed a walking exercise badly. So , I went to the supermarket to get some food and took a short walk to a nearby temple. The sky was grey and heavy with clouds. I had to talk to the sky and Vishnu, the Indian God, to request for the rain clouds to go somewhere else so that I could enjoy my walk. Luckily sudden strong winds blew all the rain clouds away; I could enjoy my solitary walk in the quiet temple.

I was the only person taking an evening walk towards the river. The atmosphere was rather melancholy and nostalgic of lively atmosphere two years ago. Luckily, the few monks who saw me just ignored me. They let me walking around taking photos around the temple. Some old buildings have been torn down thereby exposing the earth which allowed birds to rejuvenate the land with seeds from their droppings. This small patch has become a play ground for stray cats and kittens. A young convince had to walk the senior monk’s dog; this dog has grown much older during the years. I could remember when it was very bouncy a few years ago.

Then, I was surprised by a few stray cats and a pile of cats’ food nearby. I was glad that someone has been feeding during the new lockdown. The black and white kitten was very shy and wouldn’t let me going near while the other bigger cat was a undecided whether to let me touch her or not. My attention was diverted by a third skinny cat who ran away as soon as he saw me. I had to talk to him with my cat language; he surprising ran back to me and allowed me to touch him. He became very friendly and I noticed that he dared not approach the pole of cats’ food. So, I walked him there and told him to get on with his dinner.

It seemed that there’s an issue of territorial ownership around here. I felt as if there was a mafia cat having powerful influence here and other cats outside this circle were not allowed to eat the food. No wonder a few cats just sit at a distance without the courage to approach this pile of food. So I had to stand there guarding the cat until he’s finished eating. I was glad I could help out the poor skinny cat. I told him not to follow me as I had to go for a walk.

Then I met a gang of three black cats with the fourth one came running to me. I thought these cats might be expecting their regular patron who used to feed them everyday. But during this lockdown that cats’ feeder might not be able to come to the temple.
This big cat just rolled on the ground inviting me to rub his tummy. Two black cats were trying to get my attention. I thought they were waiting for their food. They didn’t see the pile of cat food nearby, so I went back there to get half of the cat food. But they refused to eat these food pellets. I decided to get on with my walk.

As soon as I crossed the road and walked towards the car park. Two more cats came out to greet me. I was caught by surprise, I had never seen so many stray cats here before. One old hungry ginger cat was complaining about not knowing where the regular feeder has gone. The other samsi or tri-colour cat was extremely friendly and he demanded a lot of body rubbing. These two cats looked really famished. But they dared not cross the road to eat the uneaten cat food. So, I decided to carry him over to the pile of food. It was strange how he trusted me and my touch. A biker who often came to the temple told me that the gang of black cats owned this area and they would chase these two cats away. It was incredible seeing two black cats wanting to charge this samsi cat; so I stood my ground and told them to stop.

The two black cats kept their distance while I watched over the poor hungry cat eating the left over. There was simply not enough cat food for the ginger cat and samsi. I had to gather up all the remaining pellets to feed samsi. After he finished eating, I had to carry him back to the car park. I left all the cats to their own dimension of reality. The river looked rather strange, the river guardians must have been in hibernation.

It was quite difficult taking photos of those long fish in the river. The fish must be getting thinner as there were no visitors to feed them. The pigeons were lucky this evening as an Indian family gave them some left over rice. I tried to walk softly and slowly as I didn’t want to frighten them off their dinner table. This lockdown has adversely affected stray cats at various temples as monks would also be getting less food offerings from people. This meant less leftover food for stray dogs and cats everywhere.

The strong wind and dimming light told me it’s time to get back. The whole place suddenly seemed to be preparing for their slumber as soon as the sky became dark. All the cats had gone back to their hidings. I was a solitary figure moving in the temple ground. That samsi cat gave a soft cry so I had to turn around. He was standing there asking me to stay; he was pleading with his soft syllables of cat emotion. I told him to stay there and I promised him I would be back soon with some food. I felt sad that I couldn’t do more for him. Then, on my way home I recalled that this cat had met me about a month ago. At that time he still looked very fat and much more cheerful. He was the cat having a nap on the boot of a car. Now I know why he was very friendly; he could remember me! Cats do have memories of places and people. I hope their regular patron would return to feed all the cats at the temple very soon.

I've fallen for cats inviting me to stroke their stomachs. Luckily, I still have all my fingers!

One forgets the animals that rely on people for food, once a lockdown hits...

Yup! I actually went back to feed the three thin and hungry cats yesterday. It seemed they recognised me straight away and came to greet me.
