Leftover Flowers - Happy Valentine's Day

Leftover Flowers - Happy Valentine's Day

Leftover Flowers
Happy Valentine's Day

I don't give flowers very often - cut flowers from the florist will die within days, so, if I give flowers they are usually living flowers in a pot where they can grow and bloom for years.

Yellow Flower Close-Up

But let's be honest, flowers look best outside in a garden or out in the wild. I wouldn't cut them for any reason. They should stay where they have decided to live.

Morning Dew on Flower

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day and I take this opportunity to post a few leftover flower photos from the past year. I have taken these photos during Spring and Summer at several locations near home or around my parent's house.

Macro of Fly on Yellow Flower

Greeting

Sweet as the summer breeze
Bright as the summer sea,
Pure as the breath of flowers
Is the wish I wish to thee;
High as the heaven's blue arch,
Staunch as the woodland tree,
Sure as the spring time's coming,
Is the love I bear to thee.

by Annette Wynne

Closed Flower with Morning Dew

The flower was still sleeping that morning, the closed blossom is covered by morning dew and nicely backlit by the early morning sun.

The bees have been awake for a while and are already busy collecting nectar from the flowers.

Hearts Were Made to Give Away

Hearts were made to give away
On Valentine's good day;
Wrap them up in dainty white,
Send them off the thirteenth night.
Any kind of heart that's handy—
Hearts of lace, and hearts of candy,
Hearts all trimmed with ribbands fine
Send for good St. Valentine
Hearts were made to give away
On Valentine's dear day.

Bee collecting Nectar on Yellow Flower

The bees haven't been the only ones searching for nectar on the flowers - thick and thin Hoverflies were having their breakfast in my parents flower garden.

Slim Hoverfly on Yellow Flower
Hoverfly on Yellow Flower

I haven't photographed many butterflies last year - this Lycaenidae Butterfly was on a Purple Flower in y parent's garden.

Lycaenidae Butterfly on Purple Flower

During a morning walk at the reservoir near home I have found a Bombus Pascuorum - the Bumblebee was also collecting nectar from a clover blossom.

Bumblebee - Bombus Pascuorum - on Clover Blossom

So, that was all for today - I wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day.

Great pictures, it is true that flowers should always stay where they decided to live or in a pot, it is sad to see them wither and die just for decoration.

Thank you so much 😀
I get always angry when I see people picking flowers while walking and then mostly throwing them away because they already wither during the walk.

Hahaha, I knew that you would have some comeback on the romantic issue Hannes.
Mountain goats are not known for their romantism and like the Norsemen (Vikings) they bang their target senseless, play a bit of rugby with it and then walk away 🤣
Note that I say this in jest and no need to get your horns scrambled 😜

Glad that you rested and hope that the new week will be great for you.

Amazing how one can be drained slowly but surely by the same old, same old Hannes.
You spent most of your life in that job and only survived because of your frequent escapes into nature.
Tiredness is the cousin of Repetition and their grandfather is Boredom who is married to Entrapment 🤣

So hang on my friend, another few years and you will be "saved" 😉

I know, Zac, I know you are right and I am working on myself to avoid boredom and his siblings 😉

Survival is the only thing that we know my friend and it requires difficult decisions at times. Survival also dont, appear without some form of sacrifice required.
But you are a tough boy and you will do whatever is required.

That's what I like and respect about you, as we work with so many children whose parents simply don't care, or who have abandoned them.

I can read a persons character by the way that they care for their children and there are a few excellent examples of this care here on Hive, including yourself.

Cheers and thanks!

Only the truth Hannes.

So now you are equating child rearing to snakes and men eating creatures?
Or eating creatures at work?

I know it's tough to rear children, as I have done the job with my three, but never had thoughts of eating them 🤣

Cheers and thanks!

I've never said anything about children, but maybe you are right somehow, because many of the venomous snakes and creatures I was talking about are behaving like little stubborn children ... I have read an email proofing this right before 😎

Nah, I hink they were woron in the article about comparing stubborn children and venomous snakes.
Venomous snakes don't scream one awake at 2am in the morning to demand an ice cream that you refused them during meal time 🤣

Haha, I can tell you that my kids never did that. Why not? Because they got their ice cream during the day 🤣

Seriously, they have been very good babies. They mostly woke up at the same times and so feeding them during the night was no problem ☺️

So, I'd prefer my kids to a snake 🐍

You were a lucky mountain goat my friend having two at the same time.
My 3 were very stubborn little characters and each had tricks of their own.
Another difficulty was that there was a boy in the middle between the two girls.

So you walk into the house and the one is playing pop music in her room, the other room has heavy metal and the third room has Roxette. All on max volume?
By the time that you get to the lounge your head is spinning and then you tramp on the dog's tail.
He yowls and jumps onto the open piano playing a Bach number.

That's why I spent my days under a tree in the back garden listening on my portable radio to Uriah Heep or Jethro Tull 🤣

I think that you were blessed with two little angels!

Cheers and thanks!

Although my kids are still good and silent, I know what you mean because we have friends with kids of which I would send some back to the factory to build a silencer in 😉

Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull? Great idea - I think after replying and eating lunch I will put my earphones in and listen to such relaxing "real" music while I do my work... 😁

Hahaha, imagine sending kids back to build a silencer in. Sounds like a dream Hannes 🤣
Yeah always great to listen to real music.

I am doing the same as my eldest daughter called me from the airport a few minutes ago.
Just to assure me that they are fine, as they are emigrating to the UK today and are boarding the plane now.
So yeah, it is a happy, sad day for me today.

I take recourse in the fact that there will be better opportunities for the grandkids in the UK, as there are none over here.

Cheers and thanks.

Yep, some kids should be returned and repaired 😂

Thinking of all you have told me I have to agree that they will have more and better chances in the UK.Nowadays we have the internet to stay in contact - my parents had nothing but the phone when I moved away.
But I can imagine that it's also a sad day - I don't even want to think how I will feel when one day my kids will move out.

Maybe a business idea in your retirement days Hannes?
"Send your damaged kids to be repaired by the Austrian Mountain Goat" ???
Jaqui sent me a message this morning that they have arrived at the "isolation" hotel and that they are sleeping now after the flight.
So soon they will return to their normal, abnormal lifestyle and luckily they are a very tightknit little family.

I am okay with everything that life throws at me my friend.

Cheers and thanks!

Oh well, I would let them run to the mountain summit every time they are to loud - believe me, after 2 runs they would be the best kids ;)

A family that holds together will survive any stupid little virus, and so will your daughter's family after they return to the new normal life.

I always expect the worst and am pleased if it's not that bad in the end ;)

A very good idea and even one run will be enough, as the thought of a next run will keep them behaving 🤣

Yeah, I am sure that they will make it and build a great new life there Hannes.
Growing up in Africa is not for sissies and they are well versed in the survival tacticts.

I am excatly the same and that helps a lot when it turns out the not as bad as the expectations 😉

Cheers and thanks!

They will make their way in the UK, I am sure. Life there must be much easier than in South Africa.

Oh yeah, they are tough kids and real go-getters my friend.
Like I said, we hope that your situation will improve over time. Maybe you have done so well for a long time, that you are resentfull of anyone coming to scratch in your salad?
Maybe life wants to slowly teach you to let go Hannes?

When retirement comes you will have to let go of everything at work and maybe life wants to make things easier for you for when the time comes my friend.?

Cheers and thanks!

Right, now I know that we are even more alike.

When I decided to move away from the Papillon HO, to come and make a new start down here, so many people told me that I was wrong to just walk away.
Their excuse was that I put so much work into it that it would be foolish just to leave.

Well, we left and I can happily tell you that I have no regrets.
You will be the same when your time comes.

Ah! Decisions are so easy to come by from the advice of all others my friend.
We forget that we have that still voice inside us and so many times we argue against it.
Trust only yourself and your "gut feelings" will lead the way.

I got some photos of the fire clouds today and the fire is about 30 kilometers away from us in a mountain range behind our mountains, but our whole area was barhed in a yellow sky this afternoon.
I came back here and have done two posts on it now.

Good afternoon Hannes,

Got back from trying to get to the fire and only got the pale color of white smoke on the mountains.
But white smoke is good because yellow or black smoke means flames.
The firefighters are suffering as it is hot here today 37C and the fire makes it even hotter.

I have already done a crow post today, but will in a while do a follow up post on the fire.

Agreed that most times our gut feels are correct, but I have also nmany times had my fingers burnt for interpreting the gut feel message incorrectly 🤣

So, you are on shift work again this weekend? Just don't sleep too much my friend 😜

I was only one night working and Saturday morning I drove home, but I have quite some things to do, so I'm only on my phone - hate to type on the phone, but I don't want to turn the computer on.

Wow 9C is swimming weather for you guys 🤣

Yeah, thankfully the strong winds are much tamer and they should make great inroads in the fire today. Early this morning there was one more flare up, miles away from where the fire started and I continue to watch our mountains.

Have a look at this early morning shot.

Good afternoon Zac,

well, I just don't feel motivated enough to turn the computer on and Hive there, although it would be much easier.

Forest fires are not easy to destroy completely. Sometimes there's still some embers under the ground which nobody can see till it has burned its way to the surface.

My son was tested positive this morning, so we are in quarantine for two days and if his second test is also positive we will get tested too and stay in quarantine for two weeks. None of us feels ill, so it won't be a problem, I believe.

Wish you a great day and week my friend 😊

Oh no, tested positive means quarantine, even if he has no symptoms, as it was the same with my daughter. They will have to test his girlfriend and her parents also.
I think that you guys must already go for testing, as one cannot play with this virus.
We will of course pray and ask for grace for all of you.

My son doesn't feel much, but I'm getting something like a flu. It's really not bad though and I am sure it won't get worse.
My son will get the results of his second test tomorrow and we are waiting for a call that we should go testing.

Yes! Please keep us updated Hannes, I don't mind if you send me 100 messages, as we have to beat this thing.
Good news today, my only living older sister called today to tell me that she is now 100% healed.
No more heaps of chronic pills that she had to drink every day and no more pains.
How? I asked her? God, she answered and even her doctors are confused.

So rest assured, whatever it will be, it will be, but you and I have an ultimate power behind us!

And you guys are now also going to be tested? We certainly hope that it will be negative.
But even if it's positive, it will stand no chance as you guys will beat it.

We declare that you guys will be all good!
You are not a mountain goat for nothing and the virus must beware 🤣

My son hasn't got the result of his second test yet, and we are still waiting for our results, Zac.

Bees and insects displayed on living flowers, always something fascinating to watch, so well captured in lighting.

Cut flowers are normally avoided except the Protea or Fynbos arrangement which last that little longer, can be dried and kept for dry flower display, still not the same as real live ones.

Have you ever witnessed bees or insects visiting cut flowers?

Salute with !WINE flowers stay where they decide to live their lives out 😉

Hope you had a wonderful Valentines Day, almost totally lost the day due to bad internet connection, I'm sure the heat was melting the booster signal out there.

Yeah, I love it to observe bees and butterflies and all the other insects in the morning when they have just woken up. They are sometimes still full of morning dew or too sleepy to escape fast when I get too close 😉

You're right, I can't remember that I have ever seen a bee on a cut flower.

Your booster must have gone for a swim to the beach to cool down in the sea 😉

Our birds are up bright and early then take siesta in midday sun hidden deep in trees, winter will be easier when they slow down a bit.

Three days later and cable is still in the throes of going in, not a quick and easy, everything is always in our traditional African time.

Well, many of our birds fly to Africa in winter, but the few ones which stay here are always near to the feeders people place outside ... they are still too fast, or better said I am still too impatient 😂

I know what you mean by African time - I think it's like our way of working compared to the South European countries where they always take their time and work slower 🙂

Beautiful post and poems for Valentine’s Day Hannes. These photos are wonderfully photographed. Love the fly, butterfly and bee ones but the dandelion and last one going to seed are my favorites.

I feel the same about cut flowers dear Hannes and don’t like cut flowers in the house. Plastic/artificial ones are okay.

Hi Jo,

thank you so much that you like the photos and for the goodies 😁

At the moment I seldom feel like going outside - too much work and then I'm mostly just too tired. So I am happy to have quite some photos in my archive 😉 and I believe I will need more of them.

My favourite is also the last photo. I haven't been satisfied with the dandelion because I haven't got it as sharp as wanted.

Thanks again, my dear, have a wonderful Tuesday 🤗

As I was reading your reply I was thinking my friend Hannes has the February blahs. It’s a difficult time of year with lack of sunshine, the shorter days and it does affect a lot of people. Lots of sleep is recommended. 💤

The middle of the week is here already.😉

I haven't heard the term "February blahs" before, but I know what you mean 😉 and you are right, but it's more, I believe, it's the whole situation we are in since last year, and it doesn't seem to get any better. But the time of year plays a big role for sure.
In a few weeks the days will get brighter and this might help ... as well as a few hours in the woods might help too - maybe this weekend 😀

I hope your rain will turn into snow and you'll have a great Wednesday, dear Jo 🤗

Morning Hannes,🙂

Yes, the pandemic doesn’t seem to be getting any better with all the variants now. The vaccines have been low in being delivered.

We had some cold nights but Friday is still hanging around in the igloo and surviving.

A few hours with nature will lift spirits dear Hannes. I hope you manage to spent some time in the woods. 🤗

Have a wonderful weekend.☀️

Good morning Jo,

it's quite warm here again and the forecast shows sunshine for the whole next week, but the winter isn't over yet, I am sure.

Whatever we do, it doesn't seem to get better. I think we just will have to live it out and one day the virus might mean no danger for us anymore. But don't take me serious, because I am only one more "bored-of-this-all" person.
Not only the virus sucks, also stupid politicians, careless people and closed borders.

The woods won't see me today, I have got some things to do at home and also work in home office, but hopefully tomorrow morning 😃

Wishing you also a wonderful weekend, dear Jo, take care and enjoy your time 🤗🌞

These flowers had to wait quite some months till I was ready to post them, because Valentine's Day was just a coincidence, honestly 😉

Thank you very much for your nice compliment, @kohsamui99, and that you agree with me 😁

Well said! "flowers look best outside in a garden or out in the wild. I wouldn't cut them for any reason. They should stay where they have decided to live". My father always taught me about this when he still alives.

These flowers are gorgeous and the bees and butterfly are fascinating. They were special gifts for Valentine's Day indeed. Hope you had good times with your family on that day. Great capture!
