"We look at the world only once, in childhood. The rest is memory". With this powerful phrase, the American writer Louise Glück, Nobel Prize in Literature 2020, leaves us a reference to think about the importance of childhood in our personal history.

It is in childhood where we learn to value life, where we hear the first words of support or disqualification, some of them will become mandates that will illuminate our path or make it dark and gloomy. A good part of what we become as adults we owe to those first years of life...

Reviewing some publications I came across this excellent initiative proposed by friend @yolimarag. In it, we are invited to a trip down memory lane to remember three games from our childhood. I'll share mine...

I spent my early childhood at my maternal grandmother's house, where we shared a house with three families formed by my uncles, their wives and children. With my cousins we always managed to invent a game, anything was good and we had fun in the most unusual ways, a piece of stone, for example, could be used to create a story and let our imagination fly.

When I grew up I participated in many collective games, besides the traditional ones, spinning tops, metras, perinolas, gurrufíos, which are still preserved in many places, there were others that I have never seen again...

Tonga

Tonga

This was a very demanding game, the bigger ones played it on their side and the smaller ones on theirs. Two teams were formed. One of the teams would line up, each would hold onto the other's waist, bend forward and the first would hold onto a fixed object. The other team had to assemble all its members in the line of those who were bent. They would start a fast race and when they made a big jump they would shout "TOOOOONNNNNNNGAAAAA". In our variant, it wasn't valid to advance once you fell on top of the others, that's why it was important to get to the front. Otherwise, the rest of the teammates would not fit in the line and the game was lost. The team that could not ride all of its teammates lost. This was a game where you took a lot of hits.

Fusilado

Shot

This game could be very brutal, especially when it was played by boys who were already big and strong. There were many variants, the one I remember and the one that was played in my house is the following: It was played with a rubber ball. A group of about ten boys was formed, each one was numbered, one at random served as referee, and it was up to him to throw the ball into the sky as high as possible. When the ball was thrown, everyone had to run somewhere, it was not allowed to stay in place, if anyone cheated, he would be shot at once. When the ball came down the referee would name a number, that boy had to run back and try to catch the ball in the air or on the first bounce, if he didn't, he would be shot. The one who was going to be shot would lean against a wall, the rest would line up about ten or twelve meters away and each one would throw the ball trying to catch it, there were boys who would throw very hard and each one of their hits would leave bruises and contusions.

Pareita

Pareita

This was a much lighter game, it was played with sticker album cards or cigarette pack wrappers, it was a very popular game during school breaks. A small group of no more than five boys was formed. Each one had his own pack of cards. A mark was made on the wall. Each one in turn would drop a pack of cards, it would run freely with the wind and be left in place. The winner was the one whose card fell on top of any other. There were some boys who were very skilled at a sleight of hand game that allowed them to give a certain direction to the shuffle once they separated it from the wall. With this game I managed to get good bales of repeated cards.
