Vayiolet: Trastorno depresivo breve recurrente

¡No!
Vayiolet: Brief Recurrent Depressive Disorder

Vayiolet is a beautiful girl with a unique disorder. Not all of us are given the same gifts and shortcomings... And after the death of her mother and blowing up a few things in her life, she agreed to be taken to a psychologist by her aunt. Although after attempting suicide several times, I guess it was time. Handling everything with sarcastic and ironic humor was her crowning glory. After a few sessions and tests, the diagnosis was Brief Recurrent Depressive Disorder. A term coined in 1985 and published by the WHO in 1992. Although it sounded like something out of a lottery, it explained all the symptoms she had been exhibiting for a while. So she gave some credit to the beautiful, but annoying psychologist across the desk from her. Something finally made sense. But it wasn't exactly what she expected.

If you think you know what depression, anxiety, and irritability are separately, mix it well into a super-potent shake with just the right intensity to bring consumers to the brink of death. Give it a peculiar name and launch it into the market where only 5% of the entire population of the Earth can drink this delicacy at least once in a lifetime. Although the chances of acquisition increase to 10% for those in their 20s and 30s. Right. Why not? It's not as if right in that age range we are fighting for our lives as if we are no longer drowning. Nothing to see.

Have you felt yourself drowning in worry and seemingly exaggerating your nervousness? Too agitated or tense? Have you worried so much about your loved one to the point of despair that you seriously think they may be in imminent danger because they haven't communicated with you for hours? Hyperventilation, insomnia and difficulty controlling your worries? Have you imagined so many possible outcomes in a short period of time and developed emotions based on that? Or have you felt the need to run away out of panic or fear? Yes, I know. It sounds commercial... But that's what anxiety is... That's what it causes. And it's only one of the symptoms.

If you think that's little... And that you would notice, right away... What about going from 0 to 3000 in a second, with something akin to anger mostly in the family setting or with people close to you on an intimate level? Blowing up and acting impulsively in tenths of a second because your level of irritability brings out the worst in you in less than you realize and then you can't explain how it happened. And it's still your actions and your body. It's frustrating and even humiliating... And that's two....

Last and not least, the most common of all... The one that most often affects the human population and traditionally lasts more than 14 days... But no... In this specific case (remember that it is a singular disorder we are talking about), it lasts between 2 and 7 days. No! It is not a mild version of what is called "Major Depression". It is not. Do you know why? Because it is so serious, that depending on the degree of affectation in the poor miserable soul that is suffering from it, it can be so serious that it could even lead to suicide. And that's three...

Pues, no podían.

Get it? Not only was Vayiolet going through depression, but that whole delicious smoothie full of powerfully harmful symptoms had entered her body to stay. And while it was her actions, it wasn't her fault. Although the episodes were brief, they sometimes affected her functionality as a person. Living with others, having a boyfriend, studying, and keeping her feelings in check was far more burdensome than it was for everyone else she knew.

It was literally a struggle to keep her mind, body and lifestyle in one damn lane. Everything was more intense and it would be that way for a while.

Years went by and at 24 he had heard a lot of phrases like "Everything with you is more intense" (And no, it wasn't a compliment), "Calm down, I'm fine. Don't overreact", "Stop threatening your sister, control your impulses", "Don't stop eating, even if you're upset it's stupid", "I know she's probably crying, because she's like that. She breaks down easily", "You haven't left the bed or eaten for two days. Are you going to die?", "There's no middle ground with you. Everything is either one extreme or the other"... So she decided to start from scratch, in her old house where she lived with her mother before she passed away. It brought back a lot of memories and sometimes she felt like she was suffocating but it was the only place where she could be alone and make it her own.

There were good days, bad days and worse days... But anxiety attacks made her want to scream and depression made her body heavy, a palpable but incomprehensible fatigue. Eating was not a priority. Long bouts of insomnia sometimes came from long bouts of sleep. Once he exploded smashing against the walls two crates of empty beer bottles, forgotten under the stairs in the backyard of the house. He pulverized entire cement blocks with a hammer and blew up some debris. In one of her romantic relationships, her boyfriend did not understand why she became disproportionately anxious in some situations or exploded with irritability, although she tried her best to reach a consensus and stay calm more than she could sometimes control. She once lived with one of her boyfriends and for a month it was all fights, yelling and tension. He loved her, but without realizing it she was venting her dark side against one of the men who had cared about her the most, that also fractured him and it was over. She wanted to be part of a team, but most of the time she was the one who had to understand others and she realized that a team doesn't work one way, or sometimes things just happened that she couldn't handle and it wasn't all her head's fault.

I know... You are wondering why the hell she had not been prescribed medication to keep her under control... Well, they could not. No psychologist in their right mind could commit such negligence. Why? Vayiolet had a tendency to develop a taste for pills and the feeling they gave her very quickly. Her body became dependent quickly and that was a problem. They could not prescribe antidepressants, psychopharmaceuticals or mood stabilizers without being sure that in an episode of anxiety she would not take more than the prescribed dose. The most viable treatment was sessions with a psychotherapist. But at the time I didn't have the money to pay for the sessions and being as impulsive as I was, I may have on more than one occasion left the room in the middle of a session or simply run off the road before I got there.

Maintaining a love life and a work life was sometimes too much. Sometimes, she simply felt like she wasn't in control of her own life. And in a world where people think you overdo it, don't understand what you put up with and only notice how you blow up it's easy to give up. So I used to cry, very, very often on the sly, to release pressure, breathe and get on with it all until I got to sleep at home and not have to think for a few hours. "Suspend the machine."

Sometimes she understood and admitted it, that a life with her was full of intensity and that she exuded total control of the environment according to her mood. But there were few things and few people who could really influence his mood as well as excite the symptoms of his disorder. And yet, sometimes it all went to hell.

It wasn't all bad, as I said at the beginning recurrent brief depressive disorder doesn't usually stay many days in a row, it just constantly appears and disappears like a very annoying ghost. So there were normal, good, upbeat days. Those were the days when she took the most care of herself. She would even prepare something delicious just to treat herself. She would treat her hair. Or she would prepare a mask for her face and then watch a series or movie that caught her attention. Those days were the best.

Living with anxiety, irritability and depression is not a game. And it's not pretty. Sometimes even watching or experiencing strong emotions that may not even be yours or real (TV, film or literary) that make an impact on your psyche, is... a problem.

Vayiolet lives an intense life, but takes refuge in art. She is an amazing writer and recently acquired a kitten who can keep her company and give each other the love they need.

For Vayiolet her art is her refuge, it is her therapy and her calming. Her cat is her support, her companion and her friend.

Many learn to live with her faults and conditions. But they don't give up and that's what's important. Finding a path without feeling like you bleed at every step. Developing our own mood stabilizers and surrounding ourselves with people who understand and love us as we are without judging us for every behavior, that is also loving ourselves.

Vayiolet longs to be with a partner who loves her not for what he wants her to be or behave like, she wants someone who understands that everything is more intense with her, but that doesn't mean it has to be bad. And that despite everything, she is and will remain a person capable of love, but who also needs to be loved madly. That she has defeated so many demons and survived, that now she only deserves something wonderful and peace. A lot of peace, despite the bad days.

She understood how to take care of herself.... And love herself even with her demons, but on her terms. Being in control is a priority even if sometimes she allows herself to let go, because not everything can be perfect.

I just think that like Vayiolet, many need to take a little more breath and fight another day, until they make it a mantra and find some peace. And if at some point you feel the need to share your life with a partner, don't let it throw your already patched up existence out of whack. Find peace, not pain and suffering. We have been through too much to allow someone to permanently break us with what it has cost us to breathe another day.
