Los mares que bañan las islas griegas están llenos de magia por sus legendarias criaturas marinas y el dominio de Poseidón, registran famosos relatos como la travesía de Odiseo y los argonautas, nos maravillan con sus abruptos acantilados y hermosas playas de origen natural y antropógeno, por ejemplo la bahía de Navagio, una maravillosa playa que se formó al encallar un barco contrabandista a mediados de 1980, el MV Panagiotis, una nave escocesa que traficaba cigarros y otras mercancías ilegales.

The seas that bathe the Greek islands are full of magic because of their legendary sea creatures and the domain of Poseidon, they record famous stories like the voyage of Odysseus and the Argonauts, they amaze us with their steep cliffs and beautiful beaches of natural and anthropogenic origin, for example the bay of Navagio, a wonderful beach that was formed when a smuggler ship ran aground in the mid-1980s, the MV Panagiotis, a Scottish ship that trafficked cigars and other illegal goods.

Aunque corroído por el óxido y la sal marina, este barco fue el artífice de diseñar esta playa con sus arenas blancas, una parte fue acumulándose alrededor por el arrime de las olas y otra es producto del desgaste que viene sufriendo el imponente acantilado de roca caliza que está al fondo.

Although corroded by rust and sea salt, this boat was the architect of the design of this beach with its white sands, a part was accumulated around by the arrival of the waves and another is the product of the wear that has been suffering the impressive limestone cliff that is at the bottom.

Los factores ambientales han sido aliados fundamentales en el proceso de formación de esta bahía. En la imagen se evidencia la degradación del litoral dorsal cuyo contenido mineral es calcáreo.

Aunque parezca irregular, esta degradación que se aprecia en el acantilado es natural y necesaria. Es parte del ciclo de formación continental planetaria. Muchos cartógrafos sostienen que en menos de 80 años habrá que dibujar un nuevo mapa mundial.

Distanciados de la playa, me dirigí en bote a la margen marina del acantilado; la belleza del escarpado con su desgaste rocoso es extraordinario. Esta zona es muy profunda, así que no consideré seguro nadar allí, menos por el riesgo del oleaje. La parte húmeda de color oscuro es producto del choque de las olas, estimo una altura promedio de 2.5 metros.

Disconnected from the beach, I went by boat to the marine margin of the cliff; the beauty of the escarpment with its rocky wear is extraordinary. This area is very deep, so I did not consider it safe to swim there, except for the risk of the waves. The dark colored wet area is the product of the shock of the waves, I estimate an average height of 2.5 meters.

Esta hermosa fotografía muestra la perfección de la naturaleza al esculpir la roca con cortes puntiagudos y transversales; pero lo más curioso es la entrada al sistema de galerías y la profundidad de las aguas. No pude hacer una toma interna, pero el guía turístico nos dijo que la longitud de la cueva es de unos 45 metros.

This beautiful photograph shows the perfection of nature by sculpting the rock with sharp, cross-cutting cuts; but the most curious thing is the entrance to the gallery system and the depth of the water. I could not take an inside shot, but the tour guide told us that the length of the cave is about 45 meters.

El color característico en el borde de la parte baja evidencia un fuerte proceso erosivo que viene sufriendo la abrupta pared. Por su origen y química esta roca no es tan resistente como parece.

The characteristic colour of the edge of the lower part shows a strong erosive process that the abrupt wall has been suffering. Because of its origin and chemistry, this rock is not as resistant as it seems.

Su formación estuvo influenciada por gran cantidad de materia orgánica y conchas marinas de criaturas marinas, muchas en extinción. Los grandes volúmenes de sedimentos se apretaron con capas geológicas de mayor resistencia y peso; por eso es posible diferenciar una tonalidad más fuerte en la parte superior de los acantilados.

Its formation was influenced by a large amount of organic matter and sea shells of marine creatures, many of them in extinction. The large volumes of sediments were squeezed with geological layers of greater strength and weight; therefore it is possible to differentiate a stronger tone at the top of the cliffs.

El choque de los fotones de luz solar contra la masa de agua y desvío luminoso hacia las irregulares paredes, crean una ilusión óptica sensacional. Da la impresión que estuviera usando lentes para polarizar la luz.

The collision of sunlight photons against the water mass and light deflection towards the irregular walls create a sensational optical illusion. It gives the impression that he was using lenses to polarize the light.

Desde unos 110 metros de altura o más, realicé esta espléndida toma fotográfica que señala la majestuosidad y perfección de esta cadena de acantilados con su vegetación costera y azules aguas en el fondo.

Cada área marina o continental posee su grandeza. Deleitar los ojos con estos paraísos del mar Jónico no tienen valoración. Es indescriptible cualquier emoción que se siente en estos lugares que hablan por sí mismos sobre su esplendor.

Each marine or continental area has its own greatness. To delight the eyes with these paradises of the Ionian Sea has no value. Any emotion felt in these places that speak for themselves about their splendor is indescribable.

Después de recorrer y tomar fotografías por casi todo el alrededor de la bahía de Navagio, me pareció que era hora de sumergirme y disfrutar las aguas del mar Jónico.

After touring and taking pictures almost all around the Bay of Navagio, I thought it was time to dive in and enjoy the waters of the Ionian Sea.
