What you see here is a picture of only a part of my paternal family (we are a very big family) was taken in the year 2014 when we were all still in the same country, Venezuela. In the photo is my older brother, part of my uncles and cousins, and my dad.

Now you may wonder what this picture has to do with today's topic and my answer is MUCH. My brother and I grew up with my dad's family, even though we knew almost all of our mother's family, our union was more rooted in the Estéves (my father's surname). At my grandmother's house there were always my brother, my cousins and I, who identified us as the Rugrats. 😂

Although my childhood in the home my parents decided to build was never good, the truth is that in my grandmother's house, where my whole family always met, it was. My cousins and I were too close, where one went we all went. All our uncles were there for us and the love was always reciprocal (in fact, I see my uncles more as my friends than as uncles).

The truth is that after the situation in Venezuela worsened, one of my first fears was fulfilled and that was when my brother and I emigrated in 2017. After that my two cousins also left, my father and some other cousins who were not so close. It was then that the Estéves family was first broken by distance. We always tried to keep everything the same and love remained strong in the distance, until in September of this year 2020 came as a succession the presence of another of my greatest fears, the death of my grandmother.

I thought there would be no greater fear after that, knowing that your second mother is passing away, turn off the light of your life for a while. But this morning, after having dreamt of my whole family being together again, a new fear presented itself, one that has me reflecting for two hours in my diary, and that is that my family (those of us who are left) will never be able to meet again at a table, to eat, talk and love.

I think about my childhood and all the processes we lived together, my father's family is composed of musicians, music lovers and artists (that's where my taste for the arts comes from). We were inseparable and there was never a birthday without us all being there, laughing and celebrating. I feel that today, my greatest fear, is to think that none of that will come back, that I will never see them again because of the distance that separates us, because we are in different parts of the world. It scares me to think that all that happiness will remain in a memory...
