Spancil Hill - HIVE Open Mic Week 40 - Hold On

avatar

Hi open mic family :)

For the Hold On week I want to try singing a Irish folk song I recently picked up.Its called Spancil Hill and was originally written by a man named Michael Considine around 150 years ago.

I thought it might fitting for this weeks theme as in the song the author is dreaming about memories he has of growing up in the Irish village of Spancil Hill as he is on a ship bound for California in the 1800s.

Hes holding on to memories of the way life was as he heads out to forge a new life in new and uncertain world.

So here we go , my attempt at a 150 year old Irish folk song....Spancil Hill

"Spancil Hill"
Michael Considine

Last night as I lay dreaming of pleasant days gone by
Me mind being bent on rambling, to Ireland I did fly
I stepped on board a vision, and I followed with th wind
'Til I quickly came to anchor at the cross at Spancil Hill

It being on the 23rd of June, the day before the fair
When Ireland's sons and daughters had all assembled there
The young, the old, the brave and the bold, their duty to fulfill
At the little church in Clooney, a mile from Spancil Hill

I went to see me neighbors, to see what they might say
The old ones were all dead and gone, the young ones turning gray
I met the tailor Quigley, he's as bold as ever still
Sure, he used to make me britches when I lived in Spancil Hill

I paid a flying visit to my first and only love
She's as fair as any lily, gentle as a dove
And she threw her arms around me saying, "Johnny, I love you still"
As she's Mick the ranger's daughter and the pride of Spancil Hill

I dreamed I held and kissed her as in the days of yore
Ah Johnny, you're only jokin', as many's the time before
Then the cock, he crew in the morning, he crew both loud and shrill
I awoke in California, many miles from Spancil Hill

Thank you for joining in and enjoying Hive Open Mic

Hey brother, pardon my delayed reply. Lots of work this week. Man, it amazes me the way you've managed to memorize these songs. Do you know them by heart, or just rehearse them a lot. You're like a singing encyclopedia of Irish music. I recently saw a movie that celebrates traditional Irish songs, called Fisherman's Friends. Did you see that? Thinking you'd be a good person to carry on the legacy of that group, maybe.

Yes there remembered of by heart , I have dozens of them now.It comes from listening to bands like The Dubliners,The Clancy Brothers, Daoiri Farell and Lankum for years.

The songs are catchy and melodic I find they are quite easy to remember.

Thanks again for the kind words :)

Yeah I've seen Fishermans Friends .I learned the song No Hopers Jokers and Rogues that plays as the titles roll. They also sing one called The Mermaid which I havent played here yet but have sung many times.

Ill do one of those 2 this week if the theme fits.
