[ESP-ENG] La teoría del corrupto – The corrupt theory

Sí analizamos a Gollum, personaje muy conocido de “El señor de los Anillos” notaremos en él una personalidad peculiar. Pues a él le encanta un anillo dorado, lo quiere solo para él, y hará lo necesario para obtenerlo pero, ¿fue Gollum siempre una criatura avara?

If we analyze Gollum, a well-known character from "The Lord of the Rings" we will notice in him a peculiar personality. For he loves a golden ring, he wants it just for himself, and he will do whatever it takes to get it, but was Gollum always a greedy creature?

Pues no. Antes Gollum era una persona normal, y se llamaba Sméagol, y le encantaba pescar y jugar con su fiel compañero. Pero cuando el anillo aparece en sus vidas, Sméagol, queda tan impactado con la belleza de la reliquia que, sin pensarlo dos veces, asesina a su amigo para quedarse solo con su joya reluciente.

Well, no. Before, Gollum was a normal person, and his name was Sméagol, and he loved to fish and play with his faithful companion. But when the ring appears in their lives, Sméagol is so struck by the beauty of the relic that, without thinking twice, he murders his friend to be left alone with his glittering jewel.

El anillo sin duda era una pieza de poder, un arma poderosa para dominarlos a todos. Claro que, al caer en las manos de lo que era una criatura insignificante, bastaría poco tiempo para dominarla y controlarla, a tal punto de transformar al carismático Sméagol en una criatura demacrada, enana y sin algún rastro de bondad. Surgió Gollum, la cara más emblemática de la avaricia.

The ring was certainly a piece of power, a powerful weapon to dominate them all. Of course, falling into the hands of what was an insignificant creature, it would take a short time to dominate and control it, to the point of transforming the charismatic Sméagol into a haggard, dwarf creature without any trace of goodness. Gollum emerged, the most emblematic face of greed.

Ustedes se preguntarán ¿qué tiene que ver Gollum con corrupción? Es que, si al caso vamos, Gollum es una metáfora, un mensaje en el cual se transmite la corrupción del alma. Así es el corrupto, una criatura inhumana que, corrompido por su codicia o avaricia, malversa lo que lo rodea.

You may wonder, what does Gollum have to do with corruption? It is that, if we are to the case, Gollum is a metaphor, a message in which the corruption of the soul is transmitted. This is the corrupt, an inhuman creature who, corrupted by his greed or avarice, misappropriates his surroundings.

En pocas palabras, nunca tuvo poder ni ética, ni moral, y entonces, cuando a él llega la posibilidad de estar en la cima, usa estos atributos para engrandecerse a él mismo, obviando las necesidades de otras personas, y además, olvidando por completo las razones originarias con las cuales alcanzó la cumbre.

In short, he never had power or ethics or morals, and then, when the possibility of being at the top comes to him, he uses these attributes to magnify himself, ignoring the needs of other people, and also, completely forgetting the original reasons with which it reached the summit.

Normalmente, hablar de corrupción es hablar de política ¡ay la política! Si nos echamos un vistazo a algunos países latinoamericanos, -como Venezuela, por ejemplo- nos daremos cuenta de que la corrupción es un símbolo que siempre estará presente. ¿Y cómo no estarlo? Cuando desde luego, los intereses personales están sobre la palestra, y a un lado se deja el bienestar de los otros.

Normally, talking about corruption is talking about politics, oh politics! If we take a look at some Latin American countries - like Venezuela, for example - we will realize that corruption is a symbol that will always be present. And how not to be? When, of course, personal interests are at the fore, and the welfare of others is left aside.

Como los que tienen el poder de gobernar nunca en sus vidas habían tenido ni una pizca de dignidad o ética, ahora que lo tienen menos se esforzarán por tenerlo, ¿el resultado? Naciones pobres, personas que pasan hambre, limosna para sobornar a los más ingenuos… el círculo de la corrupción mancha, destruye y deja huellas imborrables.

As those who have the power to rule never in their lives had even a shred of dignity or ethics, now that they have it less will they strive to have it, the result? Poor nations, hungry people, alms to bribe the most naive… the circle of corruption stains, destroys and leaves indelible marks.

Un corrupto no vela por más nadie que él mismo, se camufla en su dinero para amenazar y engañar, y quitar de su camino a todo aquel que ose con desafiarlo. La teoría es simple:

Las ansias del corrupto las calma la agonía de los inocentes

A corrupt man does not watch over anyone other than himself, he camouflages himself in his money to threaten and deceive, and remove from his path anyone who dares to challenge him. The theory is simple:

¿Por qué? Porque mediante los inocentes es que ellos apilan sus sumas de dinero, sus mansiones y lujosas propiedades. Lo irónico del asunto es que, al final de todo, los corruptos también terminan como Gollum: cayendo en su propio precipicio, destruyéndose junto a aquello que tanto los hizo felices.

Why? Because it is through the innocent that they pile up their sums of money, their mansions and luxurious properties. The irony of the matter is that, at the end of it all, the corrupt also end up like Gollum: falling off their own cliff, destroying themselves along with what made them so happy.
