Peaky Blinders has all the connotations to be the serial alterego.
It is because it is a crazy series born with no expectations whatsoever.
It is because its main character, Tommy Shelby, is a nobody who over the course of the seasons will manage to become somebody.
It is because the whole Shelby family goes from being nothing to being the most feared family in the UK.
It's because he's managed to turn little Birmingham into a serial pilgrimage destination.
It is because today everyone knows the Peaky Blinders, while 6 years ago they would have taken you for crazy if you had tried to suggest watching a TV series starring gypsies, gypsies who tried to be gangsters in England in the early 1900s.
It is because it managed to create one of the best written characters in the history of seriality.
Peaky Blinders is the serial underdog par excellence and as such and like all its predecessors, from Sons of Anarchy to Person of Interest, it continues not to collect awards and to be a niche series even now that it is seen worldwide by millions of people, even now that trains and planes to Birmingham are sold out.
The fifth season, just ended, is perhaps the best seen so far.
Dense, current and full of witty historical references and never out of place.
Thomas Shelby continues his ascent into society but continues his descent into the underworld. He does so from a different position, of apparent strength but great fragility.
When will Thomas Shelby stop?
Only when he meets someone he cannot defeat.
As he himself will say at the end of the season.
And this season he returns perhaps and indeed that man who can fight Tom to the point of making him feel powerless.
A man like Mosley who embodies all the worst fears and weaknesses of the strong and despotic man who grew up between the two world wars. A man willing to do anything to get to power and stay in power, even at the cost of killing innocent people and exterminating an entire race.
Only such a ruthless man can make Tom waver and the season finale tells us that this end is only the beginning of the long epilogue that in the next 2 seasons will bring us to the end of this incredible series.

Lo è perchè è una serie pazzesca nata senza aspettative di sorta.
Lo è perchè il suo personaggio principale, Tommy Shelby, è un signor nessuno che nel corso delle stagioni riuscirà a diventare qualcuno.
Lo è perchè tutta la famiglia Shelby passa dall'essere niente all'essere la famiglia più temuta di tutto il regno Unito.
Lo è perchè è riuscita a trasformare la piccola Birmingham in una meta di pellegrinaggio seriale.
Lo è perchè oggi tutti conoscono i Peaky Blinders mentre 6 anni fa vi avrebbero preso per matto se aveste provato a suggerire di guardare una serie tv con protagonisti dei gitani, degli zingari che provavano a fare i Gangster nell'Inghilterra di inizio '900.
Lo è perchè è riuscita a creare uno dei personaggi meglio scritti della storia della serialità.
Peaky Blinders è l'underdog seriale per eccellenza e come tale e come tutti i suoi predecessori, da Sons of Anarchy a Person of Interest, continua a non raccogliere premi e a risultare una serie di nicchia anche adesso che è vista in tutto il mondo da milioni di persone, anche adesso che treni ed aerei per Birmingham sono sold out.
La quinta stagione, appena conclusasi, è forse la migliore vista finora.
Densa, attuale e piena di riferimenti storici arguti e mai fuori luogo.
Thomas Shelby continua la sua ascesa nella società ma continua la sua discesa negli inferi. Lo fa da una posizione diversa, di forza apparente ma di grande fragilità.
Quando si fermerà Thomas Shelby?
Solo quando incontrerà qualcuno che non riuscirà a sconfiggere.
Come lui stesso dirà sul finale di stagione.
E questa stagione restituisce forse e per davvero quell'uomo in grado di contrastare Tom fino a farlo sentire impotente.
Un uomo come Mosley che incarna tutte le più nefaste paure e debolezze dell'uomo forte e dispotico che cresceva tra le 2 guerre mondiale. Un uomo disposto a tutto pur di arrivare al potere e di restarci, anche a costo di uccidere innocenti e sterminare un'intera razza.
Solo un uomo cosi spietato riesce a far vacillare Tom ed il finale di stagione ci dice che questa fine è solo l'inizio del lungo epilogo che nelle prossime 2 stagioni ci porterà alla conclusione di questa incredibile serie.
